Wow, this list fails epicly.

THE ORIGINAL Resident Evil being number one, that's the funniest thing I've ever read in my entire life.

Fatal Frame 2 is a good choice, as is Condemned (which is fuq scary imo). SH2 is the most horrifying of the SH series, certainly more so than RE1.

Replacing System Shock 2 for F.E.A.R. certainly wouldn't have been a bad call either. F.E.A.R. isn't scary.

I don't think RE was that bad of a choice.  It was scary for its time since people haven't played anything like that on consoles.  I also remembered Alone in the Dark as being pretty scary in certain spots despite the blocky graphics.  At least 1 SH should have been on the list and for me that would be SH3.  The upgraded graphics and sounds make SH3 scarier than the previous SHs.  I don't know about SH4 since I didn't play it for more than an hour.

no silent hill 2? the fuck! also fatal frame 3 is WAY scarier than fatal frame 2. rope maiden = :'(

if i had to pick games that freaked me the fuck out, i would go with

1) silent hill 2. moody, disturbing, and legitimately unnerving, with a deliberately misogynistic theme that plays into the game's overall plot and narrative.

2) system shock 2. MONKEYS AND NURSES ARE FUCKING SCARY WHEN THEY ARE MUTILATED HALF-ROBOT CORPSES. those monkey screams will haunt me forever.

3) the first and last thirds of clive barker's undying. this is the game eternal darkness wishes it was, with the middle third (eternal autumn, snooze) being the game eternal darkness is: boring and repetitive.

4) fatal frame 3. the rope maiden shit is fucked up, and the male lead's fate = :'(

5) silent hill 4. atrocious gameplay, but it has scares up the wazoo. being chased by indestructable and freaky-ass ghosts of tortured victims is YIKES,and the plot is suitably lynchian.

special mention: silent hill 1 and 3. probably the best PLAYING games in the series, but the bog-standard evil cult plot is a mega-bore. still, worth it for the freaky visuals and astonishingly awesome art direction.

I like Drinky's list because it has Undying on there, which I loved on the PC.

I'm surprised that Drinky didn't mention Alone in the Dark. Many hardcore PC gamers continue to believe that console survivor horror games are just ripoffs of AITD.

AiTD is influential, for sure, but scary? Nah.

Alone in the Dark is definitely not scary.  Undying is awesome, though!  I never really thought Fatal Frame was scary or anything, so I don't get the love.

The scariest game of all-time?  There can be only one:

the Fatal Frame games are suitably tense, especially in the late game, where the superfilm ammo is limited and the ghosts have really tricky appearances and patterns. Fatal Frame 2 is the weakest, though; it's just lolis in an abandoned village with the gimpiest plot of the 3. Fatal Frame 3 is by far and away the best, and has some legitimately twisted (literally!) moments, as well as some truly freaky boss encounters that keep you in a relentless state of tension.

Where is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines?

Ocean Hotel, and sneaking into urban buildings where random villains or innocent bystanders can surprise you at any second, IS generally pretty damn scary.

This game is so fucking awesome

it's also available on Steam for only 9.95$ (hint hint)

Activision doesn't give a flying fuck about this game, and the developers have been disbanded for three years, it's pretty much abandonware at this point

what fucking dumb idea did they have, releasing the game on the same day as Half-Life 2?

I thought Dead Rising had moments of serious spookiness. Enemy Zero was also some spooky fucking shit.

Not their fault, really.  Half-Life 2 was the game that at that point had been delayed for over a year.  Nobody knew when the hell it would release.

IIRC, part of Troika's deal with being the first to release a Source game was that HL2 had to release before it, so they were probably actually sitting on Bloodlines complete for a bit waiting for HL2 to come out, or something similar.

It's quite a feat when a game succeeds in being one of the scariest, and one of the funniest games of all time, in the same package.

I think that officer Chunk is the most hilarious character in a game ever.

System Shock 2 just isn't scary, imo.  At all.  I really don't understand where people are coming from when that game gets brought up whenever the "scariest games" conversation is broached.  It just never struck that cord with me.

I still say the Thief series has some of the creepiest moments in videogamedom though.  I was white knuckling all the way through Shalebridge Cradle and the Return to the Cathedral.

I know it's from last year, but X-Play's list was a lot better.

10) Alone in the Dark
9) F.E.A.R.
8 ) Clock Tower
7)  Siren
6) Undying
5) Eternal Darkness
4) Resident Evil 4
3) Fatal Frame 2
2) System Shock 2
1) Silent Hill 2.

One of the few fucking games I've ever played on the Saturn, and it's an obscure one!

graphically and control-wise it wasn't very good, but neither are many "horror" games period. then again, i sorely doubt a modern replay of that game would make me feel kindly to it -- i can't really stand psone/n64 three-dee these days, much less the saturn's glitchy brand of kinda-3d

I loved Fatal Frame II, but since I played that one first, I found I couldn't go back to the original's spazzy pacing or even-worse dubbing.

III was lush, but I bailed on it when it introduced its shit-tastic stealth sequences.
