NSBM is like the second best selling video game there EVER (behind the original SMB). We'll see how Galaxy does.

Actually, that used to be the best one. NSMB outsold it quite some time ago.

Just put in a couple of hours with Galaxy.  I went in expecting mediocrity, and was pretty much blown away.  Not only is the whole galaxy concept unique and fresh, but the game plays superbly, and the level design is just great!  The game play is similar to Mario 64 and Sunshine at its core; you can jump, triple jump, butt stomp, and now you can spin.  You also use the Wiimote as a cursor to gather stars, which are both used to stun enemies and to feed the living stars you encounter, and create new galaxies or planets.  I played two-player with my wife; the second player uses a Wiimote and gets their own cursor on the screen to gather and shoot stars.  She really enjoyed watching me play, which is QUITE rare.  There's just something about this game.

The galaxies part of the game is in the level design.  The game, so far, has thankfully been straight-up PLATFORMING.  No collect-a-thon crap in sight.  Instead, you travel to a galaxy, which is simply a level, and the planets are small mini stages you go through, finding the warp to the next planet.  This makes for variety in terrain and enemies all within the same level, although as many of the smaller planets are spherical, you can travel all around them, which can be a bit disorienting or confusing when it comes to taking out enemies upside down.  But this is something most will get used to quickly, and end up enjoying.  Each time you finish a stage, you get a bigger star, and getting all the stars in a galaxy leads to a boss battle, which then lets you open up more galaxies with the right amount of stars.  Along the way, there's also mini-galaxies with challenge levels (including some difficult old-school style platforming, complete with the Super Mario Bros. 3 "air level" BGM playing, and a surfing game where you need to twist your arm to steer; I found this almost impossible)

So far I've only found two power-ups.  Rainbow Mario is this game's invincibility power-up, and Bee Mario lets you fly or hover for a short time, although there's no stinger attack and walking in or getting hit with water makes the power-up disappear.

Visually, there's no contest.  Saying that this is the best-looking title on the Wii to date really isn't saying much, but Galaxy looks far, far better than any other title on the system.  It's pretty much the only "next-gen" title on the Wii, in fact, looking like something beyond what the Game Cube was capable of doing; the worlds and skylines/space in particular just look beautiful.  The frame rate stays solid for most of the time, although I did notice a slight drop every once in a while.  Galaxy's music is also fantastic; it's fully orchestrated and also has some versions of classic Mario music, particularly from the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3.

There is no doubt in my mind that this the best game available on the Wii, and a strong contender for game of the year.  Nintendo has really outdone themselves with this one.

I think a lot of people are gonna get sick playing this game.

:lol Yeah, it takes a little getting used to!

And again, that's Smash Bros though, a game that really isn't worth it unless you're going to play with people.  Mario games have always been really fun in some certain ways, and have been consistantly good.

I was in Yodobashi and they had stacks and stacks of Wiis. I was thinking "Hmm maybe it's Wii Wii time" but then I realized that I'd be paying $250 for a $75 piece of hardware that doesn't even have the courtesy to include a game or component cables...or any way to hook up to my optical input only sound setup :(((

What about RCA (AUX) cables?

as in hooking the red and white cable from your audio setup to your tv.

I hate everyone who purchased this game.

I WANT MORE MARIO GALAXY  :-\.

From what I played (past the tutorial stage I assure you) in GameStop, this game is just ridiculously amazing and exceeded my wildest expectations. It uses nostalgia as a weapon and mixes it with great level design (so far). First day purchase definitely confirmed for me.

The commercials for it have been really shitty, and there hasn't really been that much hype.  There was way more hype for, say, NSMB.  It used to be impossible to find the Wii in stores but nowadays it's relatively easy to find.

I dunno what that means, though...this is all anecdotal evidence from firsthand observation.

A Jeremy Parish review tells you two concrete things:

1.  That the subject of the review is a videogame
2.  That the reviewer is Jeremy Parish

After that it gets tricky.

Pretty much, yeah.

This is a great game.  Zelda TP didn't do shit for me, Warioware is over too quickly, and I pretty much haven't touched my Wii until Mario came along.  It's awesome.  Put aside your Nintendo hate and play it, then once you've finished, go right back to it.

It took them three tries, but they finally got it right.  Or maybe it's simply because platformers in general have gone so downhill that this game just seems that much better in comparison.   :P

In Rainbows is by far my third favorite radiohead album.  I'm still listening to it every day or two, it's very good.  I wish that videotape wasn't the last song, there should have been a more upbeat song to end the album, as I'm all depressed at the end of the album as it is.  Also, track 8 sucks, and the tracks between Faust Arp and Reckoner are filler, so the album isn't as strong as it could have been.  Still, I'm anxious to hear the B album next month when my box set gets here, and looking forward to getting a lossless version of In Rainbows.  I doubt I'll ever like it as much as OK Computer or The Bends though, both of which are solid all the way through.  I don't think I'll ever like track 8 all that much.

I can't wait for SMG, I wish it was out tuesday here  :'(  Or is it?   :-*

I HEREBY RECHRISTEN THIS THREAD 'MARIO GIVES BAD RADIOHEAD'

HEREIN WE SHALL PURSUE THE LINE OF CONVERSATION PREMATURELY TERMINATED IN PEE DEE'S THREAD

480P IS AN ABOMINATION

I LIKED THE IDEA OF RADIOHEAD TAKING UP THEIR GUITARS AGAIN, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW THEY WOULD PLAY BLAND INDIE ROCK WITH ENOUGH MULTITRACKED MOANING VOCALIZATIONS TO FILL SEVERAL ALICE IN CHAINS RECORDS

It's not out in N.A yet.  There should be much more substantial discussion about it in a few weeks.  Right now, it's mostly just trolling.

I played this for a few hours last night and came away half and half.  Some parts were really fun, some had wonky controls, and there were two wagglish minigames that were crap.

if you want crap wagglish minigames try Ratchet and Clank. ugh!
at least it has a "fuck yo sixaxis" option.
sixaxis tumbling the marble minigame is kind of fun, but the flight controls are LUDICROUS

Ratchet was fun but it was kind of two steps forward, two steps back. Hope the inevitable 365-days-later sequel puts some more stuff in. I'd also like to see some DLC, like, maybe some new arena matches or something? I dunno.
Title: Re: Who bought mario galaxy today?
Post by: bork on November 04, 2007, 08:25:46 PM
Right, XBox 1...but it's beyond what the GC could do, at least.  You know, it doesn't look like a PS2/PSP/Game Cube port...for once.

I played this for a few hours last night and came away half and half.  Some parts were really fun, some had wonky controls, and there were two wagglish minigames that were crap.

I liked the Monkeyball-like ball rolling minigame, but the surfing game just pissed me off and I found it played horribly.  But I finished it within a few tries and that's the end of it.
Title: Re: Who bought mario galaxy today?
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on November 04, 2007, 08:28:25 PM
The arena was fuck terrible.   :-\

The game in general had a skimpy end game. Ratchet 2 and 3 both had lots of bonuses, side missions, and TONS of arena missions to explore. And, they were necessary to get enough bolts for those final first playthrough weapons.

In R&CF I had plenty of money to buy everything, and there's...only the two rounds of Arena, both of which the game makes you do by plot. Ugh.

Odd, cause usually I feel like R&C games are a shallow-but-satisfying experience. This just left me wanting more.

Why did they feel the need to add "traditional" in there, though?

They obviously think Wii Sports is better than SMG.

It doesn't have wonky controls, they're as tight as a virgin.  But some of the camera angles when you're on the planetoids can get in the way.

This game fucking rocks.  I'm at around 21 stars now and the levels keep getting better and better.  It's a fun game, plain and simple.

Only at 21 stars? The heck have you been doing all this time?

Also, I was doing some thinkin and there's a bright side to Mario Galaxy's failure in Japan (sorta). Since NIntendo is currently using Japan only as a gauge to measure success and if they're following the DS line of thinking (i.e. going the PH route with the next console Zelda instead of TP-esque) then it could mean that we may get a 2D Mario on console due to NSMB's overwhelming success.

COD4
Title: Re: Who bought mario galaxy today?
Post by: bork on November 06, 2007, 02:46:07 AM
We'll have to see.  CoD4 looks awesome, but it is yet another FPS.  How will it stack up against the Orange Box and Halo 3?  Halo 3 in particular is awesome because I can play 4 player co-op online or off, play with friends on the same system online, and then there's all those replays.  Plus forge.

Since I don't know, HYPE ME UP: Does CoD4 beat it?
Title: Re: Who bought mario galaxy today?
Post by: CajoleJuice on November 06, 2007, 02:54:51 AM
I can't deny that Halo 3 has a ridiculous amount of content and options in it, but it's still Halo. It honestly feels exactly like Halo 2, at least to me. That's not really a bad thing, but Call of Duty 4 just feels like what next-gen should be. Its graphics are fucking mindblowing, the gameplay is solid, traditional COD, but transposed in the modern era, it feels fresh. The guns all feel (rumble!) and sound realistic, the speed of game is quicker yet the controller works surprisingly well (and the auto-aim never seems too ridiculous), and the sheer madness of battle has never been relayed through a TV screen so well. And I haven't even played the single-player.

The create your own class system is great, and allows you to have different guns and perks set up for different modes. The sheer amount of weapons, perks, and rewards are just awesome. Gameplay-wise, COD4 is a step above Halo 3. Also, the matchmaking in the beta, if not better, definitely quicker than what is offered in Halo 3. The lack of splitscreen online is very disappointing though.

This is not just me talking either. My two buddies who played the COD4 beta over my house (and also one of their houses on an HDTV :drool) were fucking amazed. We couldn't stop playing, even though we had to pass the controller around.
