I don't think I'm late at all.  They just performed on the BET Awards last week, even!  Just because the song has been circulating for awhile doesn't mean I'm late - if anything, it's just now crossing over into the mainstream.  If I have to hear this shit and it infringes on my LIVELIHOOD, then it has likely hit critical mass, as I don't even listen to hip hop!

Also, that link you posted doesn't even work - you suck.

what exactly happened to black people in the last couple of decades to make their music output take such a nosedive?  from awesome jazz and funk/soul to hip-hop shit.  was it the 80s crack epidemic?

The shift to hip hop imo, which essentially ended the actual composition of music and instrument playing. In the 60's blacks dominated many areas of music. Motown was producing quality pop music like Ford produced cars, and many unsung black musicians composed and wrote the music. Ray Charles wrote, performed, and composed his music, and the background of James Brown's band was black. This continued into the 70's as funk evolved, but perhaps marked the end to the once prominent level of musicianship.

"Rap" was around before 1979, but it exploded that year with the Sugarhill Gang. Rapper's Delight is a great song, but it's interesting to note that the song is essentially a group of guys rapping over the bass of Chic's "Good Times." From there rap began to slowly creep up the airwaves featuring songs that featured no live instruments, and artists who often could not read music or play instruments. Black artists who took a completely opposite direction still existed and were popular, such as Prince, and also the 80's saw the dominance of Quincy Jones's production skills.

But by the 90s rap was essentially the dominant "black" music, and there wasn't much emphasis on writing music. Sampling is not devoid of musical talent or artist worth, but lacks the merit of instrument playing and musical composition. It's a shame that today rock music is considered as "white" music by blacks, when in reality blacks created it. Jimi Hendrix and Chuck Berry are remembered as a pioneering guitarists, but people like Michael Hampton and Eddie Hazel are forgotten.

I'd love to see more emphasis put on composing music, playing instruments, etc. It's not like it's harder for blacks to access instruments today than it was 50 years ago when Ray Charles was composing classic work.

Sampling was also a lot more interesting when producers et al. did not listen to hip-hop exclusively.

I absolutely hate how Rap/Reggaeton needs to be injected into everything these days. If theres actually a good sounding mainstream R&B song out there, the producers seem to think its absolutely important to have a section of the song devoted to some distinguished mentally-challenged fellow rapping about shit. It sucks. I blame Mariah Carey, fucken bitch...I think she really kicked off the trend.

Most of the premier rap producers mainly listen to other stuff; Timbaland, Dre, Kanye, etc. But outside of Timbaland most seem to just focus on the same type of genres to sample, ie R&B and rock. :/

businessmen finding that black music is profitable and playing these images on the tv/radio, and not letting any other type of black music get exposure, making everyone think they have to make their music like that;etc

I think that was more R. Kelly with his RnB Thug image.

businessmen finding that black music is profitable and playing these images on the tv/radio, and not letting any other type of black music get exposure, making everyone think they have to make their music like that;etc
Face it black people sold out to tha man.

This is why I don't listen to the radio, watch MTV, go to shitty clubs, etc. etc. etc.

how can you find good music if you don't. give a brother some tips

Himu if you use the internet so much and can't find good music on your own then something is seriously wrong. The internet means not being a slave to corporate shovel music.

This song will send hip hop back for decades!

::) ironically the song is actually quite modern in terms of production, concept etc. The taco black movement dinosaur shit that this forum loves (Jurassic 5, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul etc) is the real regressive shit that we should be worried about

I don't know mang, maybe regression is progression. Mainstream Hip-Hop, RAP and R&B are in need of a serious reboot.

ditto, good post PD. The bluesmen of old were geniuses of utmost degrees. I think your analysis from a purely musical perspective is correct, but a major force empowering the modern hip-hop and gansta rap is the whole social context. It just hurts to see even the great african american intellectuals of this day defend rap because of how rampant it is, not necessarily because of its quality. Essentially bashing rap if you are a princeton history professor = shooting yourself in the foot(WINK WINK). Granted some hip-hop is really lyricaly clever and catchy shit but god damn man, you guys quite literally singlehandedly built american MUSIC as we know it... its just quite sadening to go from purple haze to "DROP IT LIKE ITS HAWT!111" But then in broader terms this could be associated to the general declining intellectual faculties of recent american generations.
