Title: 80GB PS3 - what the hell did I just buy?

So yeah, I finally jumped in this morning and bought a 80GB PS3 but I guess I haven't been following all these Playstation SKUs to know for sure what the hell is in this.  Is the 80GB model fully backward compatible with PS2 or isn't it?  I just assumed it was when I bought it since it was the most expensive (I know this is fucking distinguished mentally-challenged thinking here) but I just talked to a friend of mine over the phone and he told me it wasn't.  It's not a deal breaker here or anything but it'd be kind of nice to know for sure.

Ehm...the 20 and 60 GB have "true" backwards compatibility (as in, through hardware), while the 80 GB version has compromised backwards compatibility because it's achieved by software...so a lot of titles have issues or don't work at all.

Can you exchange it?  The 60 GB version is your best bet, and if you want a bigger hard drive you can just buy one and switch it in.

Definitely switch it for a 60 if you can. The BC is still pretty good (~90%?), but it's not perfect and it's only 20 more gb.

Hardware BC is the only way to go. That being said Sony's software BC > 360 software BC that being said if you REALLY want a PS3 unit for its ps2 abilities id get one now lol.

I dunno what to do with my PS3 when im not playing PS2 games on it tho :/

To be honest, I don't really remember seeing any of the 60GB models but I guess I should give 'em a call and see if they've got any in stock.

Really, I've heard Sony's software BC is worse because many of the big titles don't work and Sony's not going to work on the emulation anymore.  The 360 supports less titles but most of the games work and MS hasn't ended work on BC yet. 

If games like MGS3 aren't going to work on the 80gb, you might as well save an additional $100 w/the 40gb.

Is there some kind of list available detailing the games that aren't BC on the 80GB model?  MGS3 isn't a big deal for me since I really don't care for the MGS games but if it's stuff like ICO, then I've got a problem.

As a gamer who never really played Sony's Big Titles, dont really care. Sony software BC still wins by the numbers.

Sony is distinguished mentally-challenged.  You have to type in each game to check if it works or not.

ICO has no major problems. You may just want to pop in your major titles and see what's up.

The list lookup is not distinguished mentally-challenged, lol. Do you really want to look through a list of like 2,000 games?

I think its a way to keep people from really knowing what works and what doesnt. I mean scanning a full list is a mouse scroll. Doing what they set up is an exercise in frustration, who would bother?

Sony needs to be upfront with shit, not create frustrating ways to discover the truth.

Just list the games that don't work.  But those Japs are tricky.  Maf knows since he's a 1/4.

I really need to stay away from GAF.  I bought this damn thing and was looking to play some online matches with some of the guys over there but 99% of the Sony crew at GAF are nothing but colossal dick lickers.  How the fuck can anyone stand those bitches?

I don't have a headset, though.  I don't know if I'll ever get one.  Also, the only game I have is Resistance:  Fall of I'm Gonna Quit Talking Shit About It Because It's Actually A Decent Game.

Yeah, the PS3 is definitely a case of style over substance, but hopefully things will get better for it.

Have you run into any issues with the BC on the 80 GB yet with any of your PS2 games?

I don't think half those Blu Ray Warriors in that off-topic thread even watch movies on it, either.  Some of those dudes post in that thread all day long.  They can't possibly have enough time left in the day to watch a movie.

I watched Spider-Man 3 last night, by the way.  It's interesting to watch a movie where the wrong choice was made every step of the way during production

I, uh, don't think I'll be getting any of the major multiplayer releases on PS3...but we can send each other messages about new firmwares and blu-rays. Et cetera.

ps a release list...can it be scantily clad? that's...that's kind of ew.

If you want to play with nondicklickers, Efertlis and TONX on GAF are serious resistance players that don't talk shit. Aeon is pretty good too. Kittowny regularly plays with them too though  :lol

Honestly, you should take it back, get yer money back and buy it next year when it's $300 or less and there are more PS3-only games to play. I bought mine in July after the first price drop and because I wanted to get a hardware BC unit, and I don't think I've turned it on since August. Super Stardust HD is the tits, haven't played Everyday Shooter, I really don't think Resistance is any huge deal, and....  ??? Ratchet and Uncharted seem interesting, but I have too much other shit to play right now.

But if you don't return it, my PSN name is the same as XBL, VALIS666. I don't think I have any PSN friends. I don't know. I'm not even sure I know where the friends list is.
