I want to see Lust, Caution so go see that.
That's Ang Lee, right? I'm not paying 12 bucks to take a nap in a comfy theatre chair.
-
i might have to see the martian boy movie. vamp wants to see it, and she won't see American Gangster with me because it looks like "scarface part III" (Training Day being part II) :'(
-
I am not sure how you can call Training Day Scarface Part II.
-
Me either. I like Training Day dammit. It's funny how soo many chicks hate gangster movies
OH WELL martian boy it is. it can't be worse than Why Did I Get Married
-
Just go see Gone Baby Gone, TVC.
Also, I saw Michael Clayton and wasn't all that impressed.

gone baby gone > *

His performance was pretty damn good, especially the end, but the movie just felt too by the numbers. I don't see where all the acclaim is coming from. Gone Baby Gone was better.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE LOL

Michael Clayton -- 91% positive at RottenTomatoes, 94% Cream of the Crop
Reading the plot synopsis makes the film sound like a schlocky Grisham/Erin Brockovich ripoff, but it's a pretty entertaining character-based drama. Every role in the film is cast and acted perfectly.
I'm not sure how much you like George Clooney, though.

Clooney fucking rocks. He made Good Night, and Good Luck.
-
It's not another shitty I'm a Lolbrel hur hur hur movie like Good Night and Good Luck and Syriana, is it?
-
You didn't like Syriana?
-
It's a movie about pervasive corruption and moral ambiguity, but I don't think there is really a political slant to it. I mean, there are those that will choose to see it as some kind of "socially conscious" film about evil corporations trying to hide their dirty secrets, but everyone in it is just so broken that I don't think it's a very uplifting experience..
If you love to hate women (and I know you do ;) ), the performance of Tilda Swanton will be particularly pleasing.
-
I still might hold off on it. I don't doubt that it's good, but I've never really gotten the attraction of watching courtroom drama type stuff in the theatre. If I am putting in the effort to go to the theatre, I want something that's a treat to look at, or at least covering subject matter that I happen to be interested in.
-
There isn't a single courtroom in Michael Clayton.....and probably only about 10 minutes taking place within a lawfirm. The film has its own look and dark feel, though if you are married to the idea of something that really needs a "big screen" I'm not sure how you'd feel about it. It's written and directed by the guy who wrote the Bourne films (if that's a plus or a minus). Ebert on cinematography:
"Working with the great cinematographer Robert Elswit ("Syriana," "Good Night, and Good Luck," "Magnolia"), he uses stable, brooding establishing shots, measured editing that underlines the tension in conversations, and lighting that separates the fluorescent sterility of Clayton's business world from the warmth of family homes and the eerie quiet of a field at dawn. "
-
If you want moral ambiguity, Gone Baby Gone is waist deep in it. I could see TVC feeling it's a bit too "emotionally manipulative" though.
And I know you're a big fan of The Onion AV Club, TVC. They gave it an A-.
"There's little pretense to it, and none of the Method distractions that nearly sabotaged Clint Eastwood's recent Lehane adaptation Mystic River. The film simply dives headlong into a swamp of ambiguities and considers how to do right in an imperfect situation."
-
If you want to justify a trip to the theatre, why not just go to the Nightmare Before Christmas Digital 3D screening? That's something you will never see at home. I've always said the the problem with musicals is that most of the time, 50% of the songs in them suck. NB4C has at least 75% quality songs, and can now be seen in a totally unique way.
-
I'm pretty sure TVC is not a fan of Tim Burton. :lol
-
He's at least smart enough to recognize the quality of Ed Wood, Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Right, TVC? =P
-
Someone make a Grim Fandango movie
-
Did you ever go to see anything?
-
I can find something to like about all the Tim Burton movies. Except Planet of the Apes. Even at worst (excepting Apes), his movies look badass and are entertaining. I thought Big Fish was really good, too.

I think someone (maybe Drinky) once described Big Fish as "the story of a huge douchebag trying to learn a painfully obvious lesson." Kind of cuts it down to size.
