Title: A NEW PC IS BORN
Post by: Van Cruncheon on October 14, 2006, 11:44:58 PM
It's Saturday here in Dullsville and since I had nothing better to do, I decided to assemble a shitty PC from the 1000000000 spare parts I had lying around. All I needed for this little experiment was a MicroATX case and motherboard -- both of which I picked up at Computer Stop (www.computerstop.com) for a grand total of $72. The case had a 320W powersupply, and the mobo was an MSI Socket 775 MicroATX jobby on the bargain pile.

Yes, this is how I spend my time off.

After two hours of field stripping a dead HP and begging some DDR333 RAM off MAF, I finally have assembled a PC worth roughly $400 -- optimistically!

The final spex:

-- CPU: 1x Celeron D 2.66 gHz w/ EMD64 support (it's 64-bit, fegs!)
-- RAM: 2x 512MB 333 mHz DDR-RAM (1 GB total -- and it's a mixed 333 and 400, actually. Thanks to MAF!)
-- Video: 128 MB GeForce 6200GS (boo.)
-- Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy
-- Hard disk: 400 GB Seagate Barracude, SATAII (OMG!)
-- Media: RWCombo DVD-RW, 6x
-- Misc: 320W power supply, D-Link 802.11g wireless, 10/100 onboard NIC, 6 USB 2.0 ports

ROCKIN'! The real challenge awaits: getting Vista RC2 to work on it. Will I succeed? Are you bored enough to care? OMG! OMG!

The 32-bit execution layer works fine.

It could be a decent media center PC.

This is the fourth PC in my household. I need to find a good home for it, since this is kinda ridiculous. I'm not morphix!

i'll trade it for naked pics of jotaro. hey, it's more powerful than a wii -- probably by an order of magnitude!

let's compare

-- 2666 mHz Celeron D (best Cel yet) versus 730 mHz PowerPC
-- 128 MB (GDDR3) nVidia GeForce 6200GS (DX9 featureset) versus 24 MB (1T-SRAM)  "souped up" Radeon 7200+ equivalent (DX7+ featureset)
-- 1024 MB 333 mHz DDR-RAM versus 64 MB  486 mHz GDDR3 RAM
-- High-speed 400 GB HD versus slow-ass 512 MB Flash RAM
-- 16x DVD read (8x write) versus 6x DVD read (no write support)
-- Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 + wireless keyboard versus JANKY WAGGLETECH
-- DVI/VGA/S-Video out versus composite/S-Video (sold separately)
-- full-on Dolby 7.1 support versus that emulated Dolby shit spec
-- browse Evilbore at 1080i (maybe 1080p if DVI supports it) versus 480p
-- both support 802.11g wireless out of the box
-- play the Game of the Year COMPANY OF HEROES versus Zelda Mature Edition with fucked-up controls
-- cost to manufacture: $200 worth of parts versus $50 for the Wii

WINNER: FRANKEN-PC 2006

Well, Vista RC2 didn't take due to sketchy mobo drivers for the OS, so I'm rolling back to XP. Had to shovel a floppy drive in temporarily to load the SiS 965 SATA/RAID drivers. Floppies! WTF IN 2006

I took my main PC out of storage and it was Blue Screening for some reason. I did the normal process of elimination to find the problem (it was definitely a hardware issue) and ended up takeing out my Video Card (XFX 6600GT)...

...plugged everything back in and the video just stopped working. Come to find out my 6600GT crapped out on me (wasn't the original issue, crapped out due to me trying to find the original issue. Probably static or cracked solder) and my mainboard (ASROCK Dual Sata) doesn't have a fucken INTEGRATED GRAPHICS ADAPTOR. AHRLEJKFSLDKJF:LSDKN:LFKJDS

I have to throw down some monies for a new Video Card now. I guess I'll buy whatever equivlent 6600GT out there but a generation above it.

last night I upgraded FrankenPC with a 256 MB 6800GT from my bro and a 17" ghetto LCD from MAF. It is officially 100x more powerful than a Wii.

That said, my brother says the videocard needs a 500W power supply, but I'm using a 330W Antec -- and so far, it runs Outrun 2006 just peachy. No graphic anomalies, shutdowns, or ear-piercing whines that indicate too much of a power draw. The proc is stupidly low-power, and there's only one HD -- I should be okay, right?

Why bother upgrading when you know it will be mine?

oh, i also found out that the 6200 had only 32 MB RAM on board, despite advertising 128 MB. Apparently, that 32 MB is used as a CACHE for the 96 MB of SHARED MEMORY it takes from your MAIN RAM pool. No wonder it was so fuckin' slow, and no wonder it only cost $30!

Nope.  I don't trim for my hoes.

Your frankenrig will be mine after the Monopoly bit.  The only question is will you laugh before then.

I'm tempted to slap in an extra 300 GB HD just to make Willco's loss all the sweeter
