:-\ since i don't have a PS3, DC you must download the demo and post your impression here.
I like reading your PS3 demos impressions, it's more reliable :bow
-
i'll try and post impressions tonight. work is fucking w/ my game time.
-
I'm downloading it at work, and I'll play it at work, suckers.
:punch
-
Need Smooth Groove impressions. :bow
-
the demo is regionlocked so dc won't be able to play it lolz.
I WANT TO READ MCDRAGON'S IMPRESSIONS :bow
-
You do?
-
YES
i thought you had a ps3 ???
-
First, the graphics are great, nice shadows and light, nice amount of geometry and the character models are detailed. The animation is great and they transition nicely into the next animation. The water looks great too.
The gameplay reminds me of a more fluid gears of war,but the gunplay isn't as intense. The AI was alright, but nothing the enemies did made me say "wow." I also liked the platforming bits.
Overall,I enjoyed the demo.
-
YES
i thought you had a ps3 ???
Alright, it's not my type of game (never played Tomb Raider or something like it) but i will download it just for you. :bow

Oh no wait I can't connect to the server.
that's PSN for ya.
-
Just connected, downloading...

let's jack each other off with some GAF impressions while we wait on sony to get their shit together:
It's effin amazing, best looking console game, it just smokes anything else in terms of polycount, shader work, shadowing, lighting. It's just so amazing looking, and it's still oh so smooth.
As soon as Drake gets out of the parachute and starts going you see how close to CGi it all looks. It's just so good :O.
Oh, and the issue with the demo is in the PAL PS3s apparently, it works fine on my buddy's USA import, but won't run on my PAL saying it needs the disc, probably because it looks for region specific files (PAL version will have loads of different languages). Sucks.
Yeah, but animation and graphics are just two levels above anything else, gotta repeat it, I'm stunned.
The shooting seems a bit like GeoW, but less "heavy". It seems more natural and fluid, you can feel that you're controlling a real dude, instead of steroid fed space marine. Platforming seems like your regular fare, and is well executed, nothing new.
The combination of shooting elements which are excellent, with platforming that isn't much dkifferent thatn what could be found in PoP, with those graphics and sceneries makes it an absolute hit.
AAA, I might hype a lot of games, but rarely think of them as highly as I do about this one. It is surely the best PS3 game released so far, it should satisfy and appeal to anyone, it's mix of gameplay is perfect, it's AV presentation is second to none, high above anything else released so far. If you have a PS3, buy it! If you don't, then you suck, cause right now there are already enough PS3 exclusive games to make any self respecting gamer buy one.
If only I was hardcore enough to play the demos more than 3 times in a row... Can't wait for the final game.
SPLOOGE.
-
Sorry Sony, has no credibility AT ALL.
-
I am forever getting disconnected from PSN
It reconnects right away, but still irritating
Do online games disconnect this much?
-
^ a game like uncharted is so hot it fries networks.
-
:lol
p.s. PSN is fucked +1, wifey is having issues getting the demo as well.
-
I have it installing now.
the thread is already an unreadable mess on gaf

Just finished it. Forget what you've heard about Uncharted being Tomb Raider with a male lead. Uncharted is basically Gears of War in a jungle with worse AI, less responsive controls and a bit more platforming action. Let's count what they ripped off GOW: 1) Cover system 2)aiming trajectory with the grenade 3)blind shooting 4)clearing sections one at a time 5)inventory system 6)hint look button. Like most Naughty Dog games, Uncharted seems to be satisfied with refining what others created.
Sixaxis don't interfere too much with gameplay but they're also completely unnecessary. You use them to balance on beams or to control grenade targeting. The melee combat is very unresponsive and feels like it was added on at the last minute. The game taught me to use square, triangle, square as a combo but I couldn't get the timing to work even after experimenting several times. I just stuck with pressing square afterward which worked but also made the combat quite uninteresting.
Like I said before, there was just a little platforming. What's there isn't even as good as Tomb Raider 1. There was zero big jumps. Mostly it was just climbing a couple of short columns and making really easy jumps.
Graphics are pretty good. By PS3 standards. For every plus with Uncharted's visuals, there are two negatives. The jungle has pretty dense foliage but the plants sway back and forth in a robotic, unrealistic manner. The anti-aliasing is pretty good but there's quite a bit of tearing and slowdown, although it's nothing more than a typical PS3 game. Everything is rendered with the type of pastel colors that Mondain can't stand. Enemies are a bit stiff and basically they're just repeating the same 5-6 frames of animation.
The shadowing and lighting are quite good though. Unlike Heavenly Sword, there wasn't any weird flickering shadows. However, HS has far better cutscenes. The best word to describe the cutscenes in Uncharted is mundane. There was nothing in the cutscenes that hasn't been done elsewhere. The most impressive aspect of Uncharted's visuals is the main character's hair when you're aiming with a gun. Unlike Naruto's rags, the hair in Uncharted actually looks like it's composed of many keratinized fibers.
In summary, it looks like PS3 owners are going to be disappointed again if they were expecting a AAA game. However, looking at the PS3 releases so far, Sony fans really should be celebrating the fact that Uncharted is at least a solid 7.

hmmm.. good impressions smooth groove.. it sounds like an 8 out of 10 from gamespot.

Just read my preview, Dcharlie. You won't get fairer or more accurate impressions anywhere else. I'm the last unbiased gamer.

Updating my PS3.
hope i can play this without the region locking bug or whatever it is.

XBL at least held up before biting the dust during BioShock, PSN seems to have just farted right away

XBL at least held up before biting the dust during BioShock, PSN seems to have just farted right away
:lol
-
IMPRESSIONS:
- Animations for the main character are outstanding
- Too bad they don't match up to the scenery. He often looks like he's gliding or hanging off an invisible ledge
- Combat is pretty easy and you don't get frustrated with the autostick as much as Gears
- enemy AI is average, but they will flank and surround
- All the grass and leaves and trees and shit are constantly moving, which I found to be overkill and unrealistic
- grenades are fun, especially when you bounce one off an enemy's head
- log-walking with the 6axisEXTREME is not, I'd like to know what fucktard thought it would be
- "realistic" facial animations don't mean everyone has to have their mouths open every single second
- your sidekick/love interest whatever has a face like a pie made with a heaping helping of ugly
- "drake" talks to himself a little too much, not cute or funny, just annoying
- I like easy "puzzles," so I liked the hints and the ledge-hopping
- I had fun, but seems like zero replay value, will gamefly fer sure
-

Won't bother you since there's still no reason for you to buy a PS3.

Downloading.
hope it works.
-
7.0 like I said. Smooth never lies.
-
So far I am enjoying my PS3 for everything but the games
ratatooooooooeee and cars make my dick hard they look so good
-
The game probably won't have much replay value, but the first time through looks like it would be a fun ride. It's a rental for sure.
-
I really did like the little touches they did with the main character, like if you walk in water up to your knees only that part of your jeans gets wet, and the way he skid-stops if you're running
-
so far it sounds like it kills everything on the PS3 graphically. and gameplay wise, above average at best. not bad.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Demo Update
+ Posted by Sam Thompson // Line Producer, SCEA
Hi, since I’m new to the blog I wanted to first introduce myself. I am the line producer on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and I work with Naughty Dog on a day-to-day basis and have been working with the team since Crash Team Racing.
We are pleased to see that there is so much interest out there in the Uncharted demo, and wanted to provide a quick update.
As many of you in Europe and Japan may have already learned, today’s demo is currently only available on the North American PlayStation Store, and will only work on PS3 units in that territory. This is the case with all demos, as they are targeted per region. As you may already know, North America is the first region to launch Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (Monday, November 19th), and we wanted to be sure that we gave our North American PS3 players the opportunity to try out the demo prior to launch. Other territories are currently putting the finishing touches on the localization aspects of the Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune demo, and will release it in their respective PlayStation Stores in due course.
Unfortunately when attempting to download the demo, our friends in PAL regions or Japan may have encountered a bug in which you are asked to insert a disc. Please ignore this prompt and accept our apologies.
Thanks again for your interest in the game, we hope that those of you who do get a chance to play it get a taste for what we hope will become an action-adventure classic on the PS3.
-
The game looks nice, and it plays exactly like what you would expect a Gears of War/Tomb Raider hybrid to play like, which is ok. The wide open spaces make the gunplay a little bit different than the corridor style of Gears, which is both a good thing (feels more natural) and a bad thing (feels more realistic). The sixaxis "support" is garbage, and continues to prove the point that this may not the best thing to shoehorn in games, or in fact to use at all, ever. I can't really get a good feel for the game from this (or I can and this is it, which would make it mediocre) because the fun of the game is going to be in the varied encounters, and more importantly the complexity of the environmental puzzles. So for now I'll give it a mixed review with a cautious "OK."
The IK and shadowing are hot sex on a platter.
You can shut the sixaxis stuff off in the final game, according to Lemarchand.
-
As terrible as the sixaxis controls are, they're only a small part of the game. Eliminating sixaxis controls won't change Uncharted's status as a slightly above average game.
-
I thought Blu-Ray was region free? Why restrict demos now? lol
-
Blu Ray is region coded

:rofl

Blu Ray is region coded
Blu Ray movies are region coded (some are free though).
as for PS3 games, all are region free, for now at least.
-
Dcharlie, just go play Gears of War. Limit yourself to the handgun, machine gun, shotgun and grenades. Now imagine that Gears of War takes place in the jungle, and you pretty much got the gist of what the Uncharted demo is all about.
-
Ah, I see. I thought region coding was standard all-around.
Now I can import that train game!

Why do Sfags always pretend that they're unbiased? That's what makes them more annoying than the other fanboys.

So basically, PS3 still has no must have title?
-
So basically, PS3 still has no must have title?
It depends...
-
Just a thought.
if they are going to region lock a demo, then do it the right way, have a message saying: demo not available in your region, instead of wasting everyone time with a 1.2 gig demo.
with that said, my ps3 is US, so it will work. :D

Wait gumby is BIG BUBBA?
Yes.
-
The NINTENDO WINS guy?
Yeah, apparently, but I don't even remember making that post. I may have let someone else post under my name or something, I can't remember.
-
Devs despise GAF, don't they?
-
That was a poorly done troll though. I'm not sure if even Drinky can get away with that. The SDF is too hyped up now for any trolls to be effective. It's best to wait for the first <9 review before counterattacking.
-
I don't understand why I get banned for saying a game is mediocre, while people who launch a bunch of ad hominem attacks against me don't get punished at all. And then they cheer and pat each other on the back when they see that I've been banned.
-
welcome to the gaf reject board (tm).

The only mod's that I don't like are Evillore and Teknopathetic, I don't mind the rest.

TAKE THE RED PILL AMIRITE

One would certainly have to take some drugs in order to be genuinely impressed by this demo.

Tell Dante to STFU too. His hyperbole is on the same level. Best animation, AI, controls, etc. He's impressed that an enemy will hurt himself with a grenade if you shoot him first. What a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow. That shit's not even next-gen.
-
and re: the BIG BUBBA banning, thats the reason why I only use GAF for news, and discussing really niche games in the smaller chilled out threads
-
PS3 exclusive rundown:
Resistance - uhhh average
Lair - turd
Virtua Figt.. umm not exclusive anymore
...
........
but Gran Turismo is coming out! And Little Big Planet will be actually better than sex!

In terms of review scores, yes, but people tend to forget since it plays exactly the same as the previous 5 games. Reviewers basically gave it AAA scores out of pity for the Sony fans.

Once I inverted the aim and vertical camera, I absolutely loved the demo. It was gorgeous, and a lot of fun to boot.

Yup. I invert the camera on every single game that allows me to do so. 8)
I'm sorry I enjoyed it. I could be more raving mad like the people on GAF if it would make you happy.
-
r+c really isn't that good -- it's made me ask the profound question: 'would i still be playing this if it ran at 30 fps?'
and the answer is probably 'no'
but this OMG ANOTHER BIG PS3 GAME BITES THE DUST line is fanboy horseshit
actually the whole idea that each new game is a transcendent experience the memory of which will never be effaced from your fanboy heart (at least until the next big game)...is horseshit
and this mentality is responsible for at least half the stupidity on videogame message boards -- the stupid hyperbole, the stupid downspin
like maf said recently, most games do some things well and other things badly. i remember dcharlie saying that ps3 has had a long string of sevens or eights this year, as if this was a devastating putdown
-
Just played it for some minutes.
some impressions:
- i love the character model, i think it looks great, and i loved the water effect when he gets wet.
- graphics, i dunno, feels like Gears in a jungle, though i wonder if it will be as beautiful in a non jungle/forest environment.
and here are some things that bothered me:
- what's up with the facial expression and acting? i know it's what they are aiming for but i don't like it, not my style at all.
- why are the grasses dancing around :lol
- when you roll, i was hoping for some realism, like if i roll into a wall, i don't continue rolling into it, instead i stop or get hit you know? like Zelda iirc.
- shooting, ok i know the sixaxis triggers ain't great but shooting with the R1 button = fail.
that's all for now.
-
I could be more raving mad like the people on GAF if it would make you happy.
Yes, it would. Why did you give up so easily? Do all sfags act like cowards without the protection of their Sony mods?

I haven't seen TVC lately here, we need to read his impression as well.

Too hostile.

Its sad im glad I own a ps3 not cause of ps3 games, but cause its one of the hardware backwards compat models :P

I agree. the ps3 has got a string of decent 7/8 games. Its the overinflation of review scores that prompts idiots to claim each big release is the new ps3 AAA killer app. It's like hyping the next zelda and metroid prime to be AAA goty contenders. Uncharted will definately not be the ps3's defining moment or its "halo 3" or its "gears or war" but its still going to be a decent game. i'll still have to wait til 2morrow to check the demo out myself.
Also the Gaf thread is sickening. I actually felt sorry for lefty420...which is sad actually.

Yeah, he's too nice. Why are all the new members banned Xbots? We need some SDF membes like Kittonwy, Sorry Sony, F@lus, Dante, etc.

I really think most game magazines need to be put down. They've become a circus that does very little PLAYING of the games. I know there arent many Dynasty Warriors fans on this forum, but the reviews of any Dynasty Warriors games these days is just awful. 95% colorful lamentation of having to review the game in an effort to sound like tycho at Penny Arcade, and 5% saying that its the same as all the others blah blah.
-
You want DW to get 8+?
easy, get a big publisher, shine up the graphics, big ass marketing and of course $$$.
all done.
-
i think i just misread this post: http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=13973.msg331104#msg331104
but i don't get this business of measuring games against the unreasonable expectations of message board idiots. not even your own unreasonable expectations. i'm pretty sure mario galaxy won't resemble amirox's ecstatic gibberings...but that doesn't say anything about mario galaxy
it's funny though -- you list a bunch of good ps3 games, and i don't think our specific opinions differ much, but i think ps3 has been pretty decent, and you think it's a shit-encrusted dildo
-
DW is one thing that reviewers got right.

I'm sorry I do my best not to buy into trolls. You're free to hate on it, I'm free to enjoy it. It's a win-win situation for everyone!
-
The PS3, on its own, is probably doing ok. Unfortunately it is not alone. Its hard enough for the X360 to compete against the Wii even with a large library with generally superior versions of multiplat titles and an extremely viable online component. Then you have Sony, who stands in a position that requires that they quite literally WOW gamers away from two other consoles, and it offers a currently substandard online component, constant feature cuts, ambiguity of the consoles true purpose, and a few solid games backed by a small platoon of substandard ports of the games that came out for another system about a year ago.
-
I'm sure I'll enjoy my rental of Uncharted. As I said, I did have fun with the demo. I just can't afford to buy every $60 game that comes out - especially one that, once the surprises are over, has no replay value (I'm making a big assumption here, I know, but I'd be willing to bet it's a "done-in-one" game). As much as I enjoyed the hell out of Bioshock, I wish I'd just rented it. Some games just aren't meant to be bought and kept - at least at full retail price.
I really do want some decent, enjoyable PS3 games. I mean, I just spent $500 on this thing, for fuck's sake. I'm liking Resistance the more I play it, and I want to give Motorstorm and Warhawk a try. But I wasn't kidding when I say that I enjoy the PS3 for everything but the games right now. It's just barren, and looks to be that way for a while. I think Little Big Planet will be a fun and creative timekiller, but that's about it. So for now, I'll be satisfied with Gamefly rentals (I might even give R&C another chance), real PS2 BC, and what I actually bought it for - a kickass Bru Ray player.
-
I'm sorry I do my best not to buy into trolls. You're free to hate on it, I'm free to enjoy it. It's a win-win situation for everyone!
despite my trollickry (i just made that neologism, yay me), i really have the same sentiment. i like what i like, and it is really impossible to make me feel bad about my tastes -- yes, even my sad sad animu ones.
-
I don't hate Uncharted. It's a solid 7 which means that unlike 95% of this year, I'll actually have something worthwhile to play on the PS3. Like Drohne said, there's nothing wrong with a game that's just a 7 or 8.
-
DW Gundam got a crap score from 1up just BECAUSE it say Dynasty Warriors, its evident from the print review.
-
the dynasty warriors reviews are abysmal. there ARE fair reasons to ding any dynasty warriors release, but dw gundam of ANY recent musou release would hold up under scrutiny as a really good fucking game. same with sw2 empires.
they're willing to put in the time to evaluate the latest yearly ea sports releases, but heaven forfend they properly review dw titles as well. it's fuckin' distinguished mentally-challenged.
-
Well, Garnett Lee hates WWII-themed FPS games, and yet he still reviews every single one, so there's a similar deal going on there. I don't expect total objectivity in reviews, but going into a game review with an established and obvious distaste for the genre/setting/theme/etc handicaps the reviewer right off the bat.

I totally agree that DW is treated unfairly. Now go troll Uncharted at GAF as revenge for this injustice, Mr. Admin-sanctioned Troll.

okay, my impressions. let's keep the graphics part short because yes, it's great in that regard. i'm digging the high res textures, sexy shadows, beautiful water, and lighting. even the character model getting wet in the water was nicely done. but the graphical boner only lasts as long until your first screen tearing experience. i can't for the life of me get past games that aren't v-synced. (feel free to ignore my graphics whoredness)
gameplay. well fuck, there were actual people on gaf saying this game did NOT play like gears of war? oh come the fuck on, what part of stop-and-pop shooter don't people understand? this game IS sony's gears of war. plain and simple. sticky cover system, check. 3rd person res-evil style aiming, check. weapons mapped to d-pad, check. roll ability, cover to cover transitions, hint/objective button, check-check-check. either ps3tards have never played GOW or they're in scott peterson levels of denial. the only "innovation" to the core GOW gameplay mechanic is the tomb raider style platforming. the aiming doesn't feel tight and imo it takes way too many bullets to bring down a frail ass looking, malnourished, enemy. but it is fun shooting people. who doesn't like shooting people?
story. it's intriguing -- you and your girlfriend are enjoying a 3-month hiatus from the silicon valley and decide to check out the sights and sounds of some exotic tropical land (aka the Philippines). BAM! plane gets shot at and you're forced to parachute out. uh oh, you and the gf get separated. with luck you land to safety only to encounter darkies jumping from the trees like the savage monkeys they are. AND they have guns. your mission, find your blonde, american hottie girlfriend before she gets ravaged by the colored people with 12 inch anacondas. brilliant shit. real talk, i'm entertained by this and want to find out how it all pans out.
overall, it feels polished and will keep me entertained for the most part. but it's gone from a likely buy to gamefly status. i must admit that i was a bit letdown considering how much hype and praise this game has received from the media and forumites. they've really gotta stop hyping these games to holy hell because it's doing more damage than good -- expectations become unrealistic and solid games like this become put under a scrutinizing microscope. uncharted is pretty much a twist on a bunch of games we've played before, and that's not a bad thing. it's fun and will provide great entertainment value. but is this the game that finally defines the PS3? i doubt it.
-
just played the demo. i think it's pretty good, though probably too brief to convey any real idea of the game. i like the sort of naturalistic feel it has -- one pistol shot in the head will kill a guy, the platforms don't look obviously platformy, you have to stoop to pick up ammo. i like the pistol generally -- but the enemy reaction to the shotgun is hokey. i haven't been following the game that closely, but i didn't know it'd have so much shooting; the demo is basically gears-lite.
the one brief cutscene is kind of painful -- it goes for this wisecracking tone, but it isn't even vaguely funny. though the animation is first-rate, as you'd expect from naughty dog. the graphics too. omg the sun filtering through the swaying foliage <3
-
Ill probably still get it.
-
i think mr gay and contra 4 will hold me through november. i guess it's a nintendo month. i'll sort through the other stuff i want in a couple weeks...cod4, mass effect, uncharted, assassin's creed, time crisis 4...i wish they'd space this shit out
-
Winter sux, and it sucks more if you havent finished the queue from last Winter :(
-
naughty dog has always hated v-sync post-psone. always
-
It was very good, I don't have lots of gripes with it. The Sixaxis parts weren't that wonderful, but then again they don't represent a big part of the gameplay. It does look really really good, and I like the style of the cutscenes and the premise. I was sorta nagged by the screen tearing and hope that it's fixed in the final build, but it wasn't that overwhelming. Can't wait to uncover more of that storyline. It reminds me of one of my favorite platformers of all time that everyone has forgotten now (Montezuma's Return), but with less platforming elements, and with the look and the story of an Hollywood blockbuster.
The gameplay so far in this short level does remind you a lot of Gears of War, but it feels more natural. It felt pretty exciting, and the combination of GOW shooting and jungle exploration feels strangely good. Drake is portrayed well, he isn't portrayed like a super hero and he's pretty distraught by what he's going through, and the animations along with the character's look reflect that. That makes him sympathetic, and you immediately identify yourself to him. It's thus cool to explore that mysterious place where dangerous baddies can pop out of the woods at any minute.
At some point the shooting parts and the enemies encountered began to get a bit repetitive, but this demo sounds like some early part of the game only, like a prelude to make you become more acquainted with the gameplay elements and warm you up before the real action begins. Based on what we've been shown the parts that are to follow will feature lots of variety, charismatic villains and sidekicks to meet, enigmas to solve, and some exciting stunts to do, Indiana Jones-style.
I can't understand why anyone would hate on this, it's a well-rounded product and it played like one of the best games of the year. It's got tons of potential, I don't care what's the name of the system that runs it, it's completely immaterial. Ultimately I think that either Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect of Super Mario Galaxy is going to win the GOTY award, and I'm hyped much more for Mass Effect as far as November releases go, but the demo made me very eager to the full game's release. I'm probably just going to rent it though since it's supposed to last for like 12 hours.
-
MAF, all trolling aside, I think this is going to be one of those games that you'll buy and play for one hour. It just doesn't seem like the type of game that you would invest a lot of time in.
I'm probably just going to rent it though since it's supposed to last for like 12 hours.
Tell the truth, Mondain. You're going to rent it because you can't download it.
-
Let me paraphrase what I posted on GAF
Beautiful graphics and animation, average gameplay, 7/10
-
definitely better on hard -- i'm liking the emphasis on pistol headshots. i guess the best compliment i can pay is this: there aren't many games that would survive direct comparison to gears; uncharted invites that comparison, and comes away wounded but distinctly alive. right now i think this is winning the 'buy me after you're done with contra' sweepstakes
-
compared to what part of gears? gears' single player wasn't that good. It was good but it wasn't like a mindblowing new genre or something.
-
This was one of the PS3 games that most interested me, a bit disappointed to hear that its more shooting-based (even though I did like Gears as much as the next guy), was kind of hoping for a more exploratory, platforming-based game... sort of like the original Tomb Raider without terrible controls and awful graphics.
-
It would have been better without the shooting IMO.
-
It would have been better without the shooting IMO.
Uncharted would have been better if it did copy Pitfall on the Sega MD.
Uncharted now feels like Gears in the jungle.
-
i am hoping for more exploration and less shooting, but this is not a criticism of the game
-
It would have been better without the shooting IMO.
I'm hoping that the demo was just combat heavy because Sony wants to draw in the shooter fans. It won't be a purchase for me this fall if most of the final game play like the demo. I've played too many shooters already this year (Halo 3, Bioshock, Orange Box) which is why I haven't even been excited about COD4. The original Indiana Jones concept is far more interesting than GOW in a jungle setting. Hopefully, the final game would turn out closer to what they were aiming for originally.
remember Gears was "lol - shitty kill:switch" , now that it's all but confirmed that Unrated is Gears lite, can we just skip the middle man and start calling it "lol - shitty kill:switch lite"
or does sonyfanboy bullshit not roll like that?
Yesterday, the SDF captains were already trying to shut down the GOW comparisons by claiming that Uncharted is not like GOW "at all". ::) Why are they so leery of the comparisons? Gears of War won more awards than any game last year. Is it really that hard for them to give a little credit to a non-Sony game?
Btw, it's funny how almost everyone is agreeing with my initial assesment of Uncharted as "Gears of War in a jungle" and "solid but not amazing". :P
-
It's a good game, and there is nothing wrong with copying gears but i feel that tomb raider shooting mechanic would have been better here (heck if they could, remove guns and give me a big knife, much better :lol ), and i agree with what Professor Prole said, it's not a criticism, just a preference of mine.
ah well, Assassin's Creed will fill me in the exploration part, just hope it won't fail.
Hopefully, the final game would turn out closer to what they were aiming for originally.
That is what i am hoping for as well.
-
I wish they would've borrowed a little more Tomb Raider and a little less Gears. The firefights are fine (even though the enemies are just spawing seemingly out of nowhere) but the platforming element in this game just feels completely off to me. It's just too damn floaty....it's to the point where the main character doesn't even seem like he's in the same enviornment. I don't know, maybe I wouldn't be this picky if I wasn't already playing through Tomb Raider Anniversary on the 360 at the moment but it's kind of weird to play both games back to back like that. I also wasn't expecting this much focus on shooting. Just kind of caught me off guard.
Love the way it looks though. That blur/DOF effect when you rotate the camera is particularly nice.
-
well, with these environments, i'd rather explore and solve tomb raider style puzzles than shoot at generic sandinistas or whatever. the gow cover system was grossly inferior to r6:vegas' cover system, anyhow.
-
omg this thread is hilarious.

gears was actually good but different than R6: vegas. It's meant for you to run more and camp less.

I doubt that Prole is interested in what Fu Fu has to say about Uncharted, especially since he still doesn't own a PS3.

hyp's description of the story actually makes this game sound kinda cool. 360 Version with achievements ftw

Isn't R&C supposedly the best PS3 exclusive?
Holy Jesus I hope not. I'm trying to play through the game right now just 'cause I feel like I have to since I bought it with my PS3 but I'm having trouble finishing it because it's too boring. It's just more of the same. I feel like I've already played this game.
That 7.5 from Gamespot was too generous, imo.
The game actually does get better later on, so don't give up so quickly. I was bored out of my during most of the early levels but things start picking up around the space station level. I don't know if it's the graphics or level design, but the dinosaur planet was really fun.
What's with Insomniac lately? Both their PS3 games take so long before they start getting a little fun. Also, the graphics in R&C are really inconsistent. Like TVC, I was oohing and awhing over the graphics at the beginning but then a couple of worlds showed up, looking like PS2 R&C levels upscaled to HD, just like the 1up guy mentioned.
-
Just tried the game out, I like it but I hope theres areas with more emphasis on exploration (ala Tomb Raider like some have stated). I think this just being a Demo, Naughty Dog is just showing off the basics and shooting mechanics. It looks like the game (from other areas shown) should be heavily influenced by Tomb Raider.
Also, as Hitler Stole My Potato stated, the character interaction with the environment does feel floaty. You could tell from the early videos of the game, I guess they did nothing about it. If it gave me a more SotC feel, I would be fine with that.
-
To put my impressionsin here: it looks great, but much like Gears, the gameplay is kinda boring. I didn't really like Gears until I played through it in co-op once with demi, and since then I've had little desire to play it again.
I will go through Uncharted for the visuals. I know it's my own fault for not paying attention, but I was hoping for a bit more platforming. I thought this was going to be a Tomb Raider-y or Pitfall-y thing. I like that the platforms don't really stick out as they do in most other games.
The cut scene at the beginning was pretty terrible. The game looks great and the faces look great, but the humor is totally flat.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Demo Back on the World Map
+ Posted by Christophe Balestra // Co-President Naughty Dog
Christophe Balestra, here, and I’m Co-President at Naughty Dog. I wanted to give a final update on the Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune demo situation.
We’re really sorry about what happened and didn’t anticipate this at all. We just didn’t know people from other territories could connect to the US PLAYSTATION Network Store and download demos … now we do! We’ve been too busy working on the game to wrap our head’s around the infrastructure of the PSN.
We absolutely did not plan the demo to be region locked. As soon as we figured out the problem existed, Sam Thompson called me and I jumped into my car, drove to the office and fixed it right away. It’s an honest mistake and we didn’t try to prevent anybody from enjoying the Uncharted demo. I feel even more sorry because most of the people who experienced the problem are in Europe and I’m European myself.
So again, we’re really sorry about what happened and it wasn’t done on purpose. The good news is it’s now fixed and a new demo of Uncharted has been posted to the US PLAYSTATION Network Store so the entire world can enjoy it.
Thanks to Sam for taking the heat yesterday and for letting us know about the issue.
ok dcharlie, it's time for your impression.
-
That's really cool that they rushed to fix it.

I just don't think I have it in me to get to this supposed good part. I'm going to return this pile and pick up CoD4 for the 360. I've got a bunch of friends online playing that while I'm over here trying to convince myself that the PS3 was worth the money.
At least the Uncharted demo ain't half bad. That gives me hope.
-
Thank you dcharlie.
and i noticed this post from gaf:
Just got home from having completed Uncharted Drake's Fortune. We are not allowed to publish our review before a surden date, which mean, I won't talk a lot about it.
Oh, and this is my percents of the three core elements of the game:
85% is shooting
10% is platforming
05% is puzzles.
Maybe give and take a little more, but you can imagine the picture.
this is sad :(
-
yeah, that is kind of disappointing. i like the shooting, but i've done enough shooting this fall.
...did i just say 'i've done enough shooting?' never thought i'd see the day
-
Thank you dcharlie.

That's not what I want. :(
I don't mind shooters but I honestly wasn't expecting Uncharted to be one. What happened to my prettied up Tomb Raider?
-
I want to know if it's broken down by time or whatever. The platforming is much quicker than shooting would be (naturally), so I'm curious.
I was actually more concerned it would not have any puzzles, but I read a while ago that there aren't really any. So I am not expecting that.

Like I told Drohne, much of the enjoyment later on seem to be derived from the visual qualities of the stages. The dinosaur and pirate world are wonderful eye candy. Also, the difficulty gets ramped up a bit in the later stages which makes the combat more exciting. Aside from the lack of innovation, my main complaint is the horrible camera which doesn't let you see the enemies a majority of the time. You would think that Insomniac would have gotten the camera angles right by now.
Thank you dcharlie.

That's bad news indeed. I don't see how Uncharted have any chances at a GOTY if that's true. It's not entirely fair but Uncharted will mostly likely be docked for being closer to a shooter than adventurer. I don't think many people would be interested in going through 8-10 hrs of the type of gun fights that were in the demo. There've just been too many good shooters released in the last 3 months.

you should play r+c with the 'strafe-lock' control setting -- it basically works like an fps when you've got a gun out. the camera and the lock-on are a mess otherwise

Thanks for the tip. The alt-control scheme felt a little weird at first but once I got used to it, the combat felt a lot more fun. I could at least attack the enemies without relying on blind shooting in all directions. The only negative is that platforming doesn't feel as free as the default controls. Luckily, the platforming is really easy in R&C. I really feel that R&C is misclassified as a platformer sometimes since there is so much more emphasis on blowing stuff up.
. :-\
Why did you stealth edit? This isn't GAF. You won't get banned for speaking your mind. Besides, MAF's usually too drunk to ban anyone for trolling.
-
GOTY is reserved for Bioshock or Mario Galaxy or Portal or something. Sorry PSFans, maybe next year
-

Next year is reserved for Ninja Gaiden 2. :heartbeat

I'm sorry DC. To quote Wollan, "Uncharted is one of those experiences that makes you question the stuff you've played on the platform before it. It's not just head and shoulders above most PS3 games technically, there's a couple of folks here standing on each others shoulders."
-
"Never before has a game portrayed a living environment so convincingly. Uncharted just elbowed out Killzone 2 graphically until further notice."
I wish I had such enthusiasm myself
-

When did Wollan take up a joke character role?

When did Wollan take up a joke character role?

Wollan has to be a viral. He gets Sony info way too quickly. It's funny how Wollan gets a "full immunity" tag while fanboys of other systems get derisive labels.

Maybe its because I've stopped looking at "Official Threads" in general (which I think he sticks in) but I don't seem to remember Wollan being that bad. Those statements seriously sound like joke posts.
-

Not just him either. Look at AltogetherAndrews, J-Rez, bcr-ron, or Fortified_Concept. If you had Nintendo or Xbox fans of the equvilant of these jokers they'd be tagged or banned a long time ago.
The whole admin/mod staff is completely out of balance over there.
-
This forum is Lyte Edge's baby, I dont really moderate here if I dont have to.
-
This is my personal GOTY.
PS3 wins the holidays ladies.
Why are you such a Sony shill? Fuck off already.
-
are we really freaking out about imaginary sony virals when microsoft have got two of their 'mvps' starting official threads and giving away prizes and attending events and shit? i like evilbore because nobody takes the fanboy bullshit too seriously, but lately this place is turning into a 'coping with dissenting opinions' group therapy session
and as far as i'm concerned goty is wide open this year. i can't think of any standout games. halo 3 should have run away with it -- but halo 3 isn't the game it should have been. right now portal's mine...it's brilliant and original and authentically funny...but i finished it in one sitting and may never play it again. could be galaxy.
-
Im still not sure what my GOTY is honestly. I liked A LOT of games this year, a good half of them were unpopular haha.
-
That's a good friend, because the PS3 is heavy, as well as being the size of a fucking Thanksgiving Turkey.
-
the demo was boring and the animation was sucky and I wanted to platform but instead I got a Gears-lite Cover System and bother that nonsense
-
if stealth gameplay is suicide then stop and pop is death by tiny tiny increments
-
What is boring about Gears of War and Tomb Raider?
-
what do you mean about headshots
-
You know, the more I play Uncharted the more impressed I am with it. The gunplay is actually alot of fun and the enemy AI is pretty decent. I'm not sure about some on GAF proclaiming "infinite replayability" 'cause in the demo you know exactly where the guys are spawning from and you can pick 'em off right away but there does seem to be a pretty good AI routine being run that'll give you at least some variety.
And I'm really loving the graphics now. I'm not sure why I wasn't initially "wowed" but I'm really starting to appreciate all the small details now that I look closer - like how Drake's shirt appears to move (I know it's just a bumpmap but it's a nice effect).
Still not feeling the platforming though but I guess since the final game is more of a shooter than anything it won't be too big of a deal.

No game has or ever will have infinite replayablilty

:lol
No game has or ever will have infinite replayablilty
Not only that but they were just talking about the demo.

I like headshots. I think it's an adequate reward for skill in the FPS genre. Honestly it may be me but I was squarely aiming at their head from a close distance with a pistol and it didn't seem to register any different then shooting them in the chest for example. If you're going to emulate Gears of War, which borrows heavily from traditional FPS games, then at least include headshots since they're mandatory in that genre.
Drohne said headshots were one of the things he liked about the demo though. I think I was able to hit a couple too althought they were kinda hard since enemies are usually a bit too far away.
-
Isn't Tomb Raider easily solved puzzles with simplistic platforming? I mean I'm playing Anniversary so it might not be the best example but be real now it's no brain buster.
-
I think you're just trolling. This game will rock. It's like LOST. With illegal immigrants. And blondes.
-
The videos were all I needed. Who has time to play games these days? I run on previews and scores.

Weird, were they one hit kill though? I noticed hitting one in the head once makes it easier to drop them faster but I was hoping for an instantaneous kill.
Oh well, like I said it could've been me. ;)
TBH, I'm still not sold on Uncharted's "naturalistic" take on GOW. An everyday man killing hundreds of trained mercernaries is just as over the top as space marines, IMO. Since the premise is so ridiculous anyways, I would rather that the game wasn't trying to emulate reality and cutback on the animations that show how much Drake is straining. Like Dcharlie mentioned, some of those animations to depict realism are just too overdone.
-
headshots with the pistol are always a one-hit kill -- dunno about the ak, since i never really used it. headshots are harder to get than in most games, since there's little to no auto-aim, and enemies flail around if you hit them anywhere besides the head. this aspect of the game is done really well, i think -- you can't just spray bullets in the general area of an enemy's head, and you need to aim squarely at the body if you want to put a few bullets in a guy who's rushing you
-
I dunno. Making headshots that hard to pull off seem to belong more in a game like Rainbow 6 than Uncharted. Realistic combat doesn't seem to fit with a game that's aiming to be like an Indiana Jones experiences.

Want to guess the reason for the region lock out?
Apparently ND didn't take into account that people in other regions have user accounts for regions they don't live in, so they had something in the demo point to an asset folder that was based on region. And since asset folders didn't exist for other regions the game went bloop when people in other regions tried to play it.
Supposedly Sony knew this would cause a problem but didn't let ND know until after the demo went live.

interestingly enough they say that the action/platforming ratio is 50/50. that is awesome.
-
that's a good sign. i wasn't a huge fan of the gun play, i've got gears for that. the more platforming the better.
-
yea eurogamer has good write-ups. scores tend to be all over the place though so i usually ignore them. from what i got from that article, uncharted does nothing new, but it's a blast to play.
-
everybody's coming up with different numbers for the shooting/platforming ratio -- maybe it's a matter of how often you die fighting. i've got it preordered anyhow
-
yea i dunno who to believe. nonetheless, i will be playing this on my psnipple next week.

Also sounds like your able to platform in areas where its not exactly obvious. So most of the reviewers probably did some "Run and Gunning" instead of exploring the environment...or something.

holy shit meltdown. them damn publicants and democrats are ruining this country.
Something has to be done about this shit.
no matter how people try and spin, ps3 is hated apon by everyone..publicants and media included. thus they will do everything in there power to bring a ps3 game down so the mighty XCOCK! can come out on top.
i bet if sony released a game that played and looked like a 500 million$ budget game it would still get fucking criticized about something fucking stupid.
i am not overacting...its a fucking fact,
"On the other hand, this being a PS3 game, there's some occasional visual tearing, but it's nothing too sev"
nuff said.

I don't know DC, I'd rather have a Wollan than some of the Nintendo doods on GAF. Some of them are dilusional in a religious zealot kinda way (IE scary and creepy, like that Mario^_^ dude. Fun = The Divine!). Wollan is just abrasive but thats probably cause I may be kind of partial to the Sony brand heh

what is deeply ironic is this whole "people are only hating it because it's on PS3" swings both ways in that ANYTHING on PS3 is hyped to the fucking rafters as the second coming of Jesus, who is getting a piggyback from Elvis, who is in turn using Princess Diana as a surfboard on the seashores of the lost city of Atlantis, whilst Bigfoot pilots his B52 full of Greys to the frigging moon.
PS3 fanboys are WORSE than GC fanboys - i don't know how they've managed it, but they've taken the crown. They have no amusing fanboy characters either - at least the GC guys had Gahiggidy and a few other top notch comedy folks.
:lol
So true.
I went perusing the gaf uncharted thread last night and ended up bewildered and highly entertained. Also, I left with a seething hate for poster "Snah", the combination of his comments and his avatar is just too much for me to take.

sorry, i joke about Wollan, but i don't think he's in the crazy bunch. He seems perfectly normal, he's just in love/in the employ of (?) Sony Computer Entertainment.
Anyways... talking about GAF again... i'm going to start slapping myself whenever this happens.
Yeah, Wollan is vocal I guess so it makes him a target (Also places him as some sort of leader to the crazy bunch). There are definitely some delusional Playstation fans though, can't deny that.

I believe "Snah" is "Hans" of another board ("Opa Ages") which you could relegate as a joke character.

well, he does work for sony. ADVANCED COPY

If 4chan is the asshole of the internet, then opa-ages is most certainly the taint.

Interesting - Wollan's very precise impressions of Uncharted on Amazon were written on the 19 Oct.
If Wollan's not in the employ of Sony, he needs to go see a psychiatrist. Being that obsessive about Sony games can't possibly be conducive to a successful career or healthy lifestyle. It kinda scares me that a person would waste so much time searching for videogames info and then telling others about them.

How is the owner of Hans Age allowed to post at GAF while many respectable posters are harassed or forced out?

i trashed the uncharted thread in your name, dcharlie. i did get dinged on the light map remarks since the majority of the game takes place outside and i didn't play past chapter 7 (the light mapping crap is in 2-3 inside the ruins and a tiny part of the game apparently -- they didn't pick up on that as an indicator of my lack of experience with the game), but overall, it was a successful strike!

i really, really need enough proper time with super mario galaxy to have a go at the gaffers. someone loan me a wii!

I love how Drinky riled up all the people that are far more guilty of the stuff that they accuse Drinky of. Funny how they don't like the taste of their own medicine. What a bunch of pansies.
What game has Fafalada made? I hate how he talks down to people when he's just a 3rd rate programmer that has a bit more knowledge than the average Beyond3d poster. It's especially annoying when he comments on developers who've accomplished far more than he ever will. Unsurprisingly, SFAGs choose to believe Fafa over the developers whose voices actually mean something in the industry.
