Title: I bought Dragon Quest VIII yesterday
Post by: BlueTsunami on October 15, 2006, 01:18:51 PM
I've cracked open the package, haven't started it up yet though...

...its calling to me...the Giants game is about to start and that infernal game is whispering sweet nothings to me from my room. I'm afraid. I know when I start it up its going to envelope me, take me over....

...  :-\

Ah well, haven't played a nice quality RPG in a long long time. Can't wait! :D

I want to play it but it seems hard.

I'm finishing up Baten Kaitos right now.  :shh

:o

I should try Baten Kaitos one day, I've also been meaning to buy Disgaea. Not enough time for games though, DQVIII is probably going to take me months to finish.

I didn't really groove on DQ8 like everybody else -- I found it awfully boring. There was a real lack of character skills and stat development, the overworld was dullsville, and the battle system was too archaic to be engaging. I think I actually like DQ7 a -lot- more.

Word.  DQ7 was Edward James Olmos ugly, but it had heaping amounts of RPG stuff.  DQ8 had nothing like the job system for tinkering, and the addition of talking characters didn't really make the game better.

Only the first dungeon requires any grinding.  After that it's mostly easy.

I actually "acquired" Dragon Quest VII in anticipation of DQVIII but ended up "un acquiring" it. I still haven't fired up DQVIII one yet, but its there, in the back of my mind.

If you can get used to the long load times on DQ8, and have someone to play it with and gain stats... then it's fun.  I honestly don't think I could've had much fun if I just played it on my own without catz ;(

But IMO great game

DQVIII is amazing

I liked the stories in Dragon Quest, its just the battle system..I mean there isnt much there. And dont tell me there is, cause the game is obviously rooted in DQ Nostalgia, and thats fine. But compared to say...VP2, or Grandia III, I just cant keep interested.

I agree to an extent but DQVIII's battle system was a nice example of simple yet deep, and tradition perfected. Quite possible the best example of a tradtiional rpg I've ever seen.

I mean, the world alone puts it in a class all by itself. Compared to other jrpgs these past 5 years, DQVIII was a breath of fresh air. When I got a ps2 that's how I envisioned my worlds to be like: if I could see it, I could go there, shit like that. Nope. Instead I get a bunch of point and click shit. DQVIII is the only jrpg to actually evolve said traditions and literally perfect them.

well I can look at anything simple and say its deep. I think its more an example of an old system which has had the benefits of being refined over and over again, the result being DQVIII.

That's not a dig so much as it is just what it is. Any game that requires me to grind really needs to have a battle system that allows you to fuck with the system and find ways to exploit it.

DQVIII may have been a breath of fresh air because it came out after so many RPGs have spent the last few years attempting to refine newer mechanics.

Again, thats all well and good, but its not really 'innovative' or 'special' so much as its 'extremely solid'

I don't think anyone said it was particularly innovative, but a game doesn't have to be innovative to be special. Like I said, it can do certain things so well that have been done so many times before in the past that you look over the fact it isn't revolutionary.

I can't really look over that fact since i've moved on. Thats neat for you primitive rpg types.

I like this game. Alot.

The battle system is essentially the same as the fricken original Dragon Warrior / Quest but its a nice blast of nostalgia. I'm diggin the Weapon Class Stat type of system going on. It makes me want to grind levels just to get that next skill. I kinda dislike having to pick one weapon and sticking with it BUT I think going through the game multiple times with specific weapons in mind (as far as devoting points) could make the replay value of the game go up.

Visually, the game is fucken awesome. At first, the flickering and aliasing was worrying me. I was afraid that I would end up gouging my eye out after an extended play of the game. To my surprise the game actually become more easy on the eyes as I let go of the technical deficiencies of the game. I really really like how Level 5 handle Cell like artwork in their games, its crazy how characters exude emotion through this kind of artwork better than any 3D model with SubSurface Scattering, FF: Spirits withing muscle system for the faces etc.

Finally, the sense of scale for the overworld rocks too. It really hit me how awesome it was when I reached that beach between the second and third town. It was actually a holy shit moment when I saw it. I definitely cannot wait to see a finished Level5 next gen game...

The game is a blast if you just play it when you're really relaxed.  The game is pretty slow paced, and it's just enjoyable.. a "smooth ride" as I describe it.

Plus hunting for metal king slimes is SO fun :)  "YEAHHH!!! THE CRIT CONNECTED!! FUCK YEAH!"

Then after you're killing like 15 every 30 minutes you're like yep... next...

Dragon Quest is a pretty slow paced series but it just reminds me of the original Dragon Warrior on the NES. I've also haven't played a Dragon Warrior for many years, so its more or less a blast from the past for me.

I wanna start up the game again, right now, but I'm too beat and probably will crash and play some more tomorrow.

The overworld in DQ8 so spoiled me.  It's difficult to play other RPGs afterwards.
