I want to play some COD4 online this weekend.  Maybe some more resistance.  Maybe some more Orange Box.  I dunno.  I'm sick, so maybe just some cartoons, soup, and a blanket on the couch.

i think i'll finish ratchet tonight -- it's dull but pretty, and its progression is totally frictionless, which actually makes a nice change from the tortuous routes and intense combat of the other games i've played lately. i'll try to play through the psp rondo remake by tuesday. AND THEN IT'S GAY TIME!

Frag, pehaps you can finally answer this for me, but is the highest difficulty of X-Com actually beatable, or is it a cruel joke.

I tried it twice, and both times it was a cruel, evil joke. Next to hardest IS doable but it requires every trick in the book-rush to heavy plasma, sacrificial rookies, hyperwave decoders ASAP so you canhit only landed ufos, etc.

But level 5 difficulty? nowai.

Where're you at, in R&C?  I just finished Dino planet.

Rondo was pretty hard for me so I just put it away.  I just don't have the patience for old school "hit and run" gameplay.

just did the lava planet. you mentioned in another thread that it picks up late. resistance got much better as it went along, but man...ratchet isn't even showing signs. it gives you all these neat weapons, but the enemies put up so little fight that you're more concerned with levelling your guns evenly than selecting the right one for the job. it's almost like playing a jrpg :'(

My list is as follows:

Dracula X Chronicals- Despite a few problems I have with the remake I am greatly enjoying my time with it (damn it feels so good to get out of that freaking castle).

Phantom Hourglass- Halfway done with still only 3 hearts (died a couple of times but it's still fairly simple). So far it has the least rememberable music in the whole series and the Ocean King's Dungeon is getting kinda annoying. It's near the bottom of my Zelda list so far. It isn't bad gameplay wise, it's just the world in this one is so boring.

Super Mario 64- Never finished this, so I'm going to try and beat it before Galaxy comes out.

Blue Dragon- I am going to make a concerted effort to try and pick this up again. Made it to the second disc but sat it down for other games.

It was supposed to be a Ratchet and Clank weekend but holy hell it's boring.  I'm going to trade it in for CoD4 on the 360.

Other than that, it's the Uncharted demo, Switchball, and Tomb Raider Anniversary.

Condemned - It's ok.  Tank controls suck but what can you do.  Story is pretty damn good though
Lego Star Wars Complete Saga - Fun as hell.  Haters be damned
Disgaea - 10 kinds of fuck awesome (thanks to TVC and Prole for hyping it up)
Castlevania X (PSP) -  Not what I was hoping for.  Still Castlevania though.

Just finished getting the last achievements for PacMan and Mrs. Pacman (4 ghosts with 4 different power pellets 4 times on one board), which wasn't that hard once I sat down to do it.  Trying to get into playing Alien Hominid but goddam is that game hard.  I just get pissed and stop playing it after a short while.

Arde, if you're getting trouble from the combat in condemned, you can turn down the difficulty in the pause menu.  awesome atmosphere either way though.

I'm playing:

Call of Juarez: awesome story and atmosphere, soso gunfighting.  it's actually funner to use non-bullet methods to kill the enemies.
Quake 4: not bad.  not very engaging but it's mostly solid.
Lost Planet: I'm at the 4 legged boss that grows back it's legs and it is fucking awesome.
Splinter Cell: I'm the mission after the cruise ship one and it's pretty awesome.
Tomb Raider Legend: just started and it's better than I thought it would be.

Its fairly easy but it takes a bit of preparation to get the character to take on the group of enemies you need to kill. With everything ready, it probably takes about 10 Minutes or so (This is some heavy dudy Obsessive Compulsive grinding you need to summon from the depths). I think my eyes glazed over at one point.

And you didn't f' with the Item World? Oh man, you need to get the PSP version then and dive in. Its all about equipment and grooming each character class to take on the Item world. The reason for the obscene levels is mainly because of the Item World. The "bottom" of some of the Rare Equipment can easliy have lvl1000+ enemies.

Yesterday I went to the in-laws' house after work, while my wife went to go meet up with her friends in the same area.  So I was stuck with only my PSP.  I played Silent Hill Origins for a while, and found it pretty enjoyable.  I think it's probably going to end up better than SH4, at least.  Climax did a good job.

About to put Assassin's Creed in my 360...
unbiased impressions plz

This game is pretty weird. But it's got tons of innovative elements. It pretty much all works like you've been shown in the demonstration videos. I won't comment much yet because this seems like a longwinded game with a very slow pacing, but so far it plays like Grand Theft Auto set in Jerusalem in the age of crusades, with platforming elements from Ubisoft's Prince of Persia.

It will probably begin to show its magic later on, but so far it didn't. For instance, it doesn't feel epic, I hope that this will change. And, the pacing is very slow and dull, and the in-game cutscenes largely uninteresting.

Don't believe the bullshots too, Assassin's Creed graphics are pretty rough around the edges and devoid of detail in most locations. Of course, this is the price to pay for such a huge free-roaming universe with tons of characters on screen. On the other hand, the scope of the title is absolutely unbelievable, I don't think that there's anything that was ever made before that even approaches it in game form. You'll stop and look around you to see the city's detail and the amount of stuff in the background, and you'll think that this is truly a marvel.

The game's framerate is overally pretty slow, but relatively stable. There is some screen tearing but thankfully it's pretty infrequent. It's very far removed from the disaster that we feared and doesn't affect the experience.

Everything is shown via Altair's perspective as if he was a real person kinda like in Half-Life, only this time from a third person perspective, and without a silent hero. That does make the pacing pretty dull, but it makes the game very gripping, you'll have a very hard time to put the controller down. Suspense and immersion seem to be very important. For that reason I think it'd be better to pick the PS3 version of the game, because the game's aural portion is extremely quiet nearly all the time and the 360's DVD-ROM whining tends to overshadow the dialogue and spoils that element of tension. There's no option at all to put subtitles on, sadly.

Mina on OAs, who is usually a huge Sony antagonist, has played the PS3 version along with the 360 version, and claimed it's a very good port. Also, that while the graphical performance is a bit more sluggish, it's very very minor, overall both games would look the exact same and one would really have to be on the hunt for technical flaws to let this affect the experience.

Lastly, many people feared the sci-fi elements of the game. I won't comment on them because that would somewhat spoil the surprise, but I do agree that they're completely unnecessary, and that Assassin's Creed would have been better without them.

Mundane, that's a pretty shitty preview, even by your low standards.  Your longwinded post failed to describe how the game plays at all.  1/2 of it was wasted on the usual crap about how the 360's drive is too noisy.

I don't want to talk about gameplay yet because the game keeps on introducing tons of new elements as far as you progress. I wonder how it will all work together.

And honestly because of the problem mentioned previously, I am seriously contemplating a purchase of the PS3 version, seeing as it's a very innovative game with a lot of content. You'll definitely get your money's worth with this.

Now this game is getting REALLY really good. As some reviews pointed out, you're asked to do repetitive tasks, but it doesn't really feel tedious. If you hate gangsta sandbox games I don't think that you're going to be turned off at all by this. This game is EXTREMELY addictive, don't boot it up when you only have time for some short 20 minutes-long gaming session; be ready to have a few free hours in front of you. It really plays like GTA combined with Prince of Persia, a strangely entertaining combination.

A few hours in you enter the first big city (Damasca?) and then the game opens up exponentially. It's still rough around the edges, but the graphics also get much better in the city. The amount of stuff going on in the background is incredible! Your jaw will drop when you will first see that town on the horizon, it's going to be nearly as impressive as your first encounter with the main Hyrule overworld in Ocarina of Time. As you always have the same perspective and move relatively slowly (although Altair never gets tired from running), it really makes you feel like this is really you on screen, walking in unknown towns, forced to accomplish daring stunts with your wits and your feeble means.

The controls are all excellent, I like the clever use of the L trigger (to target people), and the R trigger (to run and jump, mostly). Everything is very precise. Horseback riding is fun and everything responds very well. You have plenty of options to make yourself discrete when moving, or to hide yourself away when guards are near, and they come in very handy. You can really jump atop any building if you want to and it's always satisfying and spectacular to look at.

The crowd interactions are a joy to behold. There's so much attention to detail! You'll spend hours just staring at the little touches that make these towns feel alive. Even if it quickly becomes a string of pretty repetitive fetch quests and simple investigations to accomplish, it still remains truly great. Stealth kills are fun to accomplish, there are so many different strategies that you can use to accomplish your goal that it's mesmerizing. It would probably be nearly just as entertaining to replay through the single player quest twice.

An instant classic that deserves to be remembered for years to come, my favorite game of the year so far after Virtua Fighter 5 and Minna no Golf 5.

However, those third person in-engine cutscenes that all happen from the same perspective are really awkward, and they're everywhere in the game. It's seriously hard to pay attention to what's going on; surely it's somewhat a voluntary design choice (to force you to pay attention to your surroundings), but it could've been better. It works well when it's done at the first person in Oblivion, Half-Life or Call of Duty, but here it's just distracting and confusing.

And the sci-fi elements still feel incredibly out of place, they only serve to distract the player from the beautiful medieval atmosphere.

Your jaw will drop when you will first see that town on the horizon, it's going to be nearly as impressive as your first encounter with the main Hyrule overworld in Ocarina of Time.

wait, so this game is nearly as impressive as a POS N64 shitfest? One to avoid then

I think he is referring to the HUD, you will see white matrix-like hud and weird messages all over the screen, apparently for gameplay purposes and not related to the story (not sure though), maybe Mondain can explain this better since he played the game, with spoiler tags if necessary.

the sci-fi elements...

spoilers ahoy

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The game seems to be happening in our current modern time period. One of Altair's descendants, who is a barman, has been kidnapped by some mysterious organization that built a curious high-tech device that allows to seek and visualize his ancestors' memories in his brain. They mention that it's part of every living being, like animals who know exactly what behavior to adopt in any situation.

So they make him lay in this strange device that looks like a scanner and then through this mean he controls an interface that allows him to relive Altair's life based on the genetic memories he has of him. The organization obviously seeks to know something that Altair knew but it's not clear what, and for what purpose.

Nice impressions, Mondain...I'm interested in AC now.  The sci-fi stuff seems dumb as does the backstory though.

Played more games this past weekend:

-Silent Hill: Got inside the sanitarium, which is quite creepy, and HUGE.

-Shin Sangoku Musou 5: See my Dynasty Warriors 6 thread.  It's definitely a beautiful game, that's for sure!

-Virtua Fighter 5: Played a bit as practice for the 360 version.  I found it got old rather quickly and we went to...

-DOA4: Yup, I happen to prefer playing DOA4 to VF5.  There, I said it.  I'm much more keen on 2D fighters and my favorite 3D fighters are DOA and Soul Calibur.  VF5 is the deepest of 'em all, no doubt, but damn if it isn't incredibly boring aesthetic-wise and filled with awful music.

-KOF 2002: Played this at the arcade.  We happened upon a game center I'd never been to, and they had a cab there.  I beat some Japanese guy who was showing off in front of his friends pretty badly; I couldn't see him but my friend looked over and said the guy was cursing and shaking his head as I beat him with simply tactics using Mai, Yuri, and Terry.  Man he sucked.   :lol

-Mario Galaxy: Couple more stars GET!  This game is always fun.

CoD4 didn't see much play.  :(  It will this week.

Wow, those were good impressions, Mondain.  I'm actually interested in AC now, and it was totally off my radar before.  I've read somewhere that there's an estimated 40 hours of gameplay in AC - would you say that's the case?
Title: Re: It's the Weekend "What's everyone playing?" Thread.
Post by: MrAngryFace on November 11, 2007, 01:48:32 PM
I've edited Mondain's impressions for everyone else.

And the sci-fi elements still feel incredibly out of place, they only serve to distract the player from the beautiful medieval atmosphere.

all the vs' had very simple controls.  the one with a smoke screen was a little hard because it had a smoke screen but this was by far the easiest controlling vs in the game.  I just loved the way all the elements of LP's gameplay came together at that boss.
N3 is crap, DW Gundam shits all over it.
I don't get it when people say this.  I played all of N3 but only the demo for DW gundam so maybe I'm missing something.  N3 actually gives you a good variety of attacks that you have to use, DW:G seems like you can only do the same few attacks over and over.  plus the grunts had nearly no variety.

wtf why?

download the demo.  they made it about 2/3 the number of enemies in the final game on that level and of course, combos are easier for you and you have better ones than in the demo.  the gundam game was really repetitive.  don't get what anybody thinks was better.

Its very good, cause I only bought one copy.

That being said you should probably go edit the Wikipedia:

Quote
On the first day of its release, Gundam Musou sold over a 100,000 copies, making it the first PS3 title to sell over 100,000 on its first day. Also, the game sold about 70 percent of its 170,000 -180,000 launch day shipments, making it rank third in overall sales — after Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire.[7] IGN gave the game a score of 6.8 out of 10.

While Japanese game magazine Famitsu gave the game a total score of 33 out of 40[8], English reviews have been either lukewarm or mixed with an average critic rating of 64% for the PS3 version and 60% for the Xbox 360 and Game Informer giving it a 5 out of 10.

Well, i don't know if this is true or not, but Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom looks to be based on the same engine.

and it looks much more prettier, as for the gameplay, no idea if it is better or not.

yeah, there's a lot of content, and you can do whatever you want at your own rhythm like in GTA or Oblivion, and go pretty much wherever you want; this seems very possible to play for 40 hours of unique, proper single player content, perhaps even more... so refreshing compared to all those 59$ 6 hours-long shooters that next-gen gave us

and I wrote that I deemed it to be an instant classic because it's extremely innovative and the size of the game world and its population are an unparalleled game design feat; not only that, but it will really impress the hell out of you, and leave a long lasting impression on you; you'll think about the game in complete awe long after you've turned your PS3 or 360 off... there are very few games that accomplish that, it's kinda like playing Half-Life for the first time

It's real easy to understand.  The stages are linear and aren't open battlefields like in the Musou games; you go from start to finish, killin' 'em all.
