Title: I want a backup external HDD!
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on October 15, 2006, 06:47:12 PM
I am lazy, but some close-calls in the past make me realize that now, more than ever, I need a one-touch magical backup device.

What's the best way to set this up? I have about 250 GB in HDD I need to bebacking up. My choices are:

1) Pre-fabbed external HDD
2) Buying an IDE HDD and a USB 2.0 external enclosure separately

Any suggestions on that front? A good external enclosure would let me swap a 500 GB drive in down the line or something, so might be the better solution.

Also, any suggestions for backup software? While my setup may not actually have a magical "one-touch" button, backup software that ran in the background and did incremental backups at 3 AM every night or something would be cool.

Help me, Evilbore, lest I lose my rare and valuable collection of CompuServ 16-color GIF porn!  :hyper

Just get an external drive, and drag what you need over, unless your not keen on reinstalling windoze should you lose it.

and send me the porn.

I read this and went to Staples.com and discovered that a Staples just opened up like 2 weeks ago down the street from me. Went, bought, back within 20 minutes. That WAS easy!

250 gigs, on sale for $99 this week.  I can vouch for the quality.  Best thing about it is the power save feature, which kicks in until you access the disk.  It also shuts down when you shut your PC down. I have one almost filled with...stuff.

Edit:  whoops, too late
