With Curb and Weeds ending and the writers strike I needed myself some new tv shows. I just bidded on a region one bootleg of the first season of Life on Mars on ebay. I have heard amazing things about it but has anyone seen it here?
-
i loved both series of it myself. i did have to run a few phrases through Google though. :lol
-
I just watched S1 last week, it's pretty damn awesome. Just be forewarned that it's way more 70s police procedural than it is supernatural horror mystery (though it is both).
-
it's amazing

I gave it a B-

And I know Patel agrees with me, but worth stating: A 70s police procedural centered on British police is DAMNED interesting, especially for us gaijin that know little about both the UK in the 70s, and British police shit in general. The way the, uh, "supernatural" stuff is integrated is done really well, too. The show takes a pretty ridiculous concept and makes it work swimmingly. One of the best shows in recent years, anywhere in the world.
Watch it now before David E Kelley's US take befouls it, and stupid gays on GAF are saying the US version, all Officed up, is better than the original! See how shitty US producers cram a new Jim and Pam/Sam and Diane/Ross and Rachel into a formerly brilliant show!
That said, if I wrote up a short list of people that I believe could do the concept justice in the US, David E. Kelley would likely make the list. The success of the Office doesn't give me much faith, on the whole, though.

Kelley's Mars was supposed to be a mid-season replacement after christmas but wont the strike fuck that up? All they have filmed is the pilot I think.

I am sure it will turn up after the strike is done. It's not like Kelley is a nobody with a show nobody cares about. He is an uberproducer with the rights to remake one of the biggest UK hits in recent memory, and that means something after the Office blew up.

I had no idea Kelley & Bochco collaborated on a show and it was Doogie Howser! maybe it was a wikipedia vandal's fabrication, I'm scared to go back and check
-
I never heard that, but Doogie does sound like the quirky sort of thing that Kelley would be involved with.

I did some checking. ABC still plans to put Life on Mars on the air but its in limbo due to the strike.
If I would guess they'd probably just wait untill the fall at this point.

I'd imagine that as a mid-season replacement, they were just going to do season 1 based entirely and directly off of the 8 episode series 1, so it is possible that all the writing work is done on at least most of the episodes, depending on how heavy or light the reimagining is. I do know that the US people approached the UK leads about doing the US version, so they apparently do not plan on changing the setting from the UK to the US. I imagine that most of the changes have had more to do with making like, the Brit police system easier to understand for US audiences, or smoothing over the heavier accents and British cultural references.

I have a bootlegged region 1 spaced on dvd, what else would I need in life? All the brit shows I like are in region 1 already (Python, Fawlty Towers, Black Books, The Office, Extras) or I can get them bootlegged (Spaced).
-
You haven't watched enough brit shows then if you are stuck with Region 1
-
I do need some more britshows. What would you say is good to check out? Region 1 or not. And not that Nick Frost sci-fi one, I watched some of that online already.

No, it's more of a police procedural with some psychological elements that are frequently trippy and sometimes creepy. I think you would like it. It's a very "different" show in several regards.

A shame Simm's turn on Doctor Who wasn't as great as it could have been, but I think we have Russel T Davies to thank for that.
