Title: Post UR MR GAY impressions here.
Post by: hyp on November 13, 2007, 01:59:15 PM
galaxy > mario 64.  this is the best game on the wii hands-down (zelda's got nothing on it). i played about 2.5 hours last night.  i crumbled under the temptation when i heard my local game crazy had it in.

so far the game is as fun as been stated by the japan owners on this forum.  from the get go you're overwhelmed with a bunch of worlds/galaxies to explore.  there's a bit too much story this time around, but i'm assuming it's nintendo fan service at play.

graphically, it's good, not great.  it's great if you compare it to last gen consoles that max out at 480p.  art style is top notch, but if you've got an expensive LCD setup like i do, sit FAR back to avoid all the jaggies and low res textures.  the effects were done nicely and the variety of color schemes is a nice change of pace if you've been playing gritty shooting games as of late.   the good thing is, you'll soon forget about the game's ugliness once you become immersed in the gameplay.

gameplay wise, it's the ultimate fusion of super mario 3/64/sunshine.  the controls are tight and waggle responsiveness is exceptional.  level progression and use of gravity is probably the most "innovative" parts i've experienced thus far.  but even with those elements, i'm not convinced that this game is as revolutionary as some claim it to be.  i'll have to get further into the game to see if there's anything truly mind blowing. so far, it's more of a twist on traditional mario 64 gameplay with elements from all the previous mario games.  personally, i'm a bit mixed on the spherical worlds approach.  the bite sized chunks are nice, but the camera isn't flawless.  sometimes it's too far out and i have a hard time judging how close/far i am from an item or baddie.  the disorientation will take some time to get used to as well.  the camera is not always centered, so you'll be fumbling around with the controls from time to time.  this may change as you become more accustomed to the mechanics.

overall, the game is extremely solid, fun, and imo, the only reason worth owning a wii (unless you like wii sports).  if you've been a long time fan of mario games, this should fill the void you've been experiencing since super mario 64.  aside from the collect-a-thon i don't see much longevity/replayability in the game.  there is a shit-ton to do and explore, so it'll keep you busy for quite some time.  but it's definitely a "beat-it-shelve-it" type game.  the pacing and progression is pretty slow, so i don't think i can have extended play sessions like i do with other games.  to me, it will be a game i keep coming back to in between my twitch shooters and action games.  you rpg whores will probably be fine.  this will be my wii goty, but that's not saying much.

one last note.  i played co-op with my wife last night.  perfect for my lazy ass because i didn't have to collect any of the stars.  she just pointed away and got them for me.  but one thing that sucks about co-op is that too many times instead of stunning a baddie (by pointing and pressing A), she'd click on mario which causes him to jump or spin (if you're in mid-air).  so i highly recommend only playing co-op with someone that can aim good.   :lol

Fuck the haters.

This is definitely a GOTY candidate. SOOO FUN.

And for those people who are like bu bu bu GRAPHICS ARENT HD, well, the PS3 has Uncharted and Heavenly Sword, and they are visually the best games on consoles right now, but graphics aren't everything.

My choice for GOTY (so far, haven't played Mass Erect)

I shall wait for your review, senor drohne. So far you have the best taste in Marios (and Zeldae!) from what I've seen, so if you like it, it must be good. :)

I had to choose between using the pointer or the analog stick with my left hand (both usually done with my left hand).  I choose to point with my left hand and move with my right.

nope, the camera is fixed. =\

You can change the camera a bit with the d-pad but I didn't play around with it much.  I don't think you can do anything about the camera being upside-down at times, though.

Actually, after playing a bit, the camera wasn't the problem, really.  My analog stick was uncalibrated, so my frustration was coming from that.   Crappy graphics aside, this is pretty darned cool.
Title: Re: Post UR MR GAY impressions here.

that's weird.  how did you go about re-calibrating it?

I just unplugged the nunchuck and plugged it back in.  It autopauses when you unplug it, so it doesn't fuck you over.

Basically, when I was pressing up, I was moving up and slightly to the right, but since I was on a small, curved planet, the movement of the camera made me think it was a camera thing, not a control thing.

I like it.

* I like how there's only 3 stars to each galaxy, so I dont get bored with constantly going back to the same level (only unlocked the Honeyhive Galaxy, and it had 3 stars too)
* I like how each star has its own set path, so you discover new areas (based off the first three stars on Good Egg Galaxy)
* I like how it's straight to the point, in terms of level design and goals
* I like how there's no distinguished mentally-challenged 100 coin star for each level

* I think Star Bits are distinguished mentally-challenged
* I think having 3 hits is distinguished mentally-challenged, but the game has not proven too difficult
* I think the lack of coins is distinguished mentally-challenged, but this lends to the 3 hit note, it is difficulty related, not star related
* Co-op mode is completely unnecessary

* The graphics have their own style, but its more of a "glaze everything over" thing. It's definitely not the best Wii can do. I think Smash Brawl will be a better showcase, from the pics and such I have seen.
* The music sounds good, the Good Egg Galaxy music was very epic-sounding, compared to say - the first painting in Mario 64

In summary, it's just another Mario game, it doesn't do anything special. Don't be deceived by the nintards.

Be fair!  Everything up to and including the rabbit chase sucked total nuts!  It was only once you blast into the first star area that things really start to come together!

I agree with basically everthing demi said there.

Re: the 3 hit thing.  My complaint isn't so much that it's 3 hits, but that there's a life meter.  If they were going with a 3 hits and you're dead system, it would have been cool if they did something along the lines of OG mario. Have you shrink or something as you took hits and got health back.  It seems kind of silly to have a meter for just 3 hits.

what really annoys me about the health meter is the zelda-esque beeping that happens when you've got 1 tick left.  that shit drives me insane.  the fun saves it from all nitpicking though.

I'm digging it, the star bit collecting hasn't been a problem and I appreciate the 3 hit life bar, seems like it'll add a bit more challenge to the game. I wasn't too crazy about either Mario 64 or Sunshine, at least compared to the 2D ones, quite honestly. Only managed to get the 3 stars in the Good Egg Galaxy so far, but I'm gonna marathon this game this weekend as I have no other plans. It also looks really sweet on my plasma, only complaint is its slightly jaggy but no where near the PS2-level jagginess of the store demo sets :P

My dream 3D Mario would still be the classic styled stages in Sunshine, strung together in a linear progression, with absolutely no fluff (collectathon elements, minigames, story development) added (aside from putting in enemies)... just make it obstacle course after obstacle course, ideal for speedrunning. Basically, a 3D take on the original SMB.

I think this is basically the closest we are going to get.  Collection elements aren't about to go away, and neither are unnecessary story bits, sadly.  Still, I think Galaxy is as good a prjection as can be done.  Wait until you get a bit further, and see the variety you get to deal with.  Despite a setting shift, it's very close to what we asked for.

I did something similar by playing and completing SM64 before I started on Galaxy. Never actually finished the game before, mainly because I never felt it stood up to the originals. I still find alot of the stars annoying to get but the Bowser stages became my favorite in design (and music).  By the time I got done with it I was so used to the mechanics and graphics of the game that the jump to Galaxy was quite jarring. Not just in a visual leap but how fluidly everything controlled and animated.

Didn't I tell you so? ;)

I'm also going to finish R&C before moving on to Mr Gay.  School stuff came up just when the game got fun.  I finished beating the Pirate Ship level and got the data from the computer.  How much longer do I have to go?  Distant mentioned something about the Captain so I'm guessing that I'll have to fight the pirates again.

uh...i guess you did call it! you've got seven or eight planets left i think.

as for mr. gay, it gets off to kind of a clumsy start. a prologue that needlessly ties the spacey setting to the musty old mushroom kingdom. an initially jarring camera. the shock of going back a generation visually. even the music is cloying at first. but having played through that first egg galaxy, i like what i'm seeing. it's funny how quickly you adapt to the initially mindbending spherical playfields -- they're like portal's portals in that respect. each little planetoid presents you with some fresh little obstacle to work through. it's too early to say how good it is, but it's clearly going in the right direction -- away from collection, away from repetition, away from what passes for 'exploration' in videogames -- towards the linearity and stage-by-stage inventiveness of the great 2d mario games. let's see how it develops as its level design ramps up.

i'm having a control issue, though. it's not the pointing or the waggle, which are perfectly unobtrusive. it's the analog stick on the nunchuck. which is inexplicably convex and tiny. i'm tempted to look for a third-party replacement, but i'm already fed up with wii-related expenses

It looks surprisingly good on my HDTV. I was afraid it would look as bad as it did on the demo tv at EB/GS.

yea i think my tv has a lot to do with it.  i hear it looks pretty good on plasmas.  but my aquos brings out a little TOO much detail and exaggerates flaws like no other.

just finished ratchet, which actually gets quite good late, when you've got your full arsenal and the challenge kicks in. i think i would've liked it much better if it had let me turn up the difficulty at the outset. i don't know why developers insist on locking hard modes away. whatever. i'm going to play a bit of sin and punishment, just to forget what high definition looks like, and then start in on mr gay

You're *probably* a little over half way through R&C.

Man, that

rail boss fight on Kerchu was awesome.

I went in with low expectations graphically for this game. I was expecting Twilight Princess levels of blurriness but instead I was pretty surprised on how good it looked. It's still a bit blurry and jaggy but it's definitely a leap above anything the Gamecube could do. The art style and high frame rate really help it too. Also my opinion might be hampered by the fact that I played SM64 to completion right before starting Galaxy. It may not be as sharp as the stuff I've seen on 360/PS3 but it's definitely not ugly.

i'm having a control issue, though. it's not the pointing or the waggle, which are perfectly unobtrusive. it's the analog stick on the nunchuck. which is inexplicably convex and tiny. i'm tempted to look for a third-party replacement, but i'm already fed up with wii-related expenses

Yep.  I was running off of walls and cliffs because I don't have 'finesse' with the analog stick.  I never had that problem with the GC version, I think it's the nunchuck as well.  There's something off with it's impementation, or I just don't have the hang of it.  I've never really had a finesse problem with another analog stick though so I was glad to read someone else having little issues.  I feel like I have loose sloppy control over Mario ala Zelda PH controls rather than razor sharp Mario Sunshine controls.

It's a little disappointment in a fantastic package though.

I just finished getting the Dimensioner before the captain stole it from me.  The game is much harder all of a sudden, which is great.  Like Drohne said, the game would have been much better if the difficulty had been higher from the start.  Also, I wish the starfighter levels and decryptor minigames were optional.  They're some of the worst filler material I've ever seen in a high profile game.

man, nintendo just can't help themselves with the minigames and the time attacks and the races against water galactic mario -- and the first 'hidden' star i've encountered was a bit lazy as well. but the game's content-to-filler ratio still seems better than mario 64's -- and far better than sunshine's. 20 stars in i'm liking it a lot. it's style is closer to mario 64's than i'd initially thought, but the level design manages to keep things fresh and inventive and pleasingly weird. another comparison to ratchet is perhaps useful: ratchet occasionally turns you upside-down as well, but it keeps its camera decidedly right-side-up. galaxy has no such scruples, and that little device of turning the world sideways or upside down really does put things in a new perspective -- mario in 3d is no longer new, so galaxy has sourced its newness elsewhere.

drohne, music impressions, please. I'm pretty lenient on gameplay as long as it fills certain expectations (which Galaxy seems to do), but music is the main thing I'm worried about. I just don't want it to be like 2 good tracks with everything else being mediocre. Nintendo needs to return to the music of old.

the music is good. it mixes the sort of smash-brothersy new stuff with timely rearrangements of old mario songs. some of the tracks are kind of sickly-sweet, but it's a huge improvement on the listless, joyless music in sunshine and new smb

Drohne, why didn't you warn me about Mr Gay's graphics?  I almost went blind when I put it in for a quick preview.  Luckily, I still have a couple levels left in R&C before I have to go through that torture again.

bobobo amirox says it looks like a 360 game in 480p

it probably looks worse than god of war II. but at least it's 60fps.

Nope. 60fps all throughout. Did you read it on IGN? Matt makes lots of typos.

Galaxy doesn't look good at all. I don't care for the visual style. It's like a giant glazed donut. Perfect for the fatty nintards.
