Title: Sin City...OMFG
Post by: Phoenix Dark on October 16, 2006, 03:04:46 AM
Well, my face just got blown off. Sin City is easily the coolest, most badass film I've seen in years. It oozes with a bravado and style that makes it purely entertaining; from start to end, the movie is simply a blast. Despite the movie's over the top nature, I couldn't help but be transfixed for the entire 2hr+ journey.

From the very first scene I was instantly hooked. The stylized visuals provide the perfect canvas for the beautiful mayhem the movie presents. Like Pulp Fiction, various storylines are told, all of which connect to a certain degree. Each storyline is interesting, some more than others. I found the last two to be the most explosive. The movie is filled with badasses, but no one is cooler than Marv in The Hard Goodbye story arc. From his dialogue to his actions, the dude simply kicks ass. I can't remember the last time I saw a character so awesome in a movie; he's everything (and more) Wolverine should have been in the X-Men movies. Although some of the lines and acting seem a bit rough and cheesy, they are presented with a smooth confidence that exceeds any criticism.

Marv certainly isn't the only badass in the movie. Clive Owen's character is awesome, and his story arc (The Big Fat Kill) is simply amazing. The hookers seem in this story arc - as well as throughout the movie - are a great addition; the boobs are magnificent, and they really makes me want to get in my car and drive downtime right now. Rosario Dawson...oh lord. And I'd pay to have that asian chick cut my balls off.

My mind is too blown to go on praising this movie, so I'll stop. Like V for Vendetta, the movie really shows that "comic book movies" aren't all about men in masks or hammy dialogue.

Yea, Sin City is pretty awesome.

One of the best theater experiences I've ever had...and my friends and I had to sit in the very first row. The movie was so awesome that I didn't care that my neck hurt afterwards.

Totally badass; I'm going to watch it again today.

This movie really blows away most comic movies, many of which lack the serious tone of the comics. Like V for Vendetta and Batman Begins, Sin City takes no prisoners.

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance is my favorite from last year. Sin City would make a Top 10 though, and Begins a Top 15 probably.

Really? Haven't seen all of Sympathy, but from what I've seen and what trusted individuals have told me, its a little "meh" compared to the rest of the Vengeance films... ???

Upon a first viewing and expecting Oldboy Part Deux, yes. Upon several more viewings, and judging it on it's own merits, it has grown on me immensely, to the point of being better than Mr. and just below Oldboy.

Good stuff. Its just best to look at it as a black comedy too. Mr. is very brutal and emotional, Oldboy is more Shakespearean, and Lady is a dark comedy. At least thats how I feel. Give it a second chance and I bet youll like it.

SC2 should be even better. Dwight's story is the main one, and Clive is my boy. Also, since SC was so unexpectedly well received, they can push the envelope more this time.

Pisses me off that they pushed it back for Grindhouse though. I much prefer SC's brand of terrible.

Quite right. But the trailer + the cast + the entirety of QT's and RR's filmographies tell me everything I need to know.

Dude.  It's a movie.  It may be complete fucking shit.  I don't think there's any point hyping it unless it was some all-singing all-dancing little snowflake of a movie that destroys every normal movie.  I hope for a movie that doesn't suck, but I know that if they need to "sample" other movies in the genre to make it good, they will go ahead and do that.  I wouldn't expect the to not do that.
Title: Re: Sin City...OMFG
Post by: Solo on October 17, 2006, 06:54:40 AM
Of course they will "sample". What do you think QT's career is built on?  ::) Before you jump down my throat, yes, every person in every realm of art cribs from those who came before him/her. But few do it with less subtley than QT does.

I'd sacrifice subtlety for quality.

Fair enough. But as I said in some other thread, the quality has arguably dropped with each passing QT movie. But thats a whole other matter, and I dont want to derail this thread anymore, so Im done on this subject.

I've heard Tarintino steals a lot of shit. One of my friends is basically a semi-militant black lesbian and she HATES QT. Says he stole shit from black movies and stuff

Jackie Brown is a mish-mash of bits of 70's blaxploitation flicks. So, yes.

Quentin Tarantino gets a lot of hate for doing what everyone else in Hollywood does - "steal" stuff.  Except he actually takes stuff he loved watching growing up and usually puts it together (or mixes it with something else outright) in a unique way that's entertaining.  And he can write a good script.  I think it's cool that you have a guy making films he wants to see, though.

QT seems to at least give credit to the stuff he pillages

After he was called on it enough, he did. Now he makes no bones about it. I at least admire that honesty.

It's not supposed to be Hartigan, fyi.

And the original book did it SO much better... :(
