Mass Effect is the only contender that is still out, and all signs point to it being. . .well, I don't have much faith in Bioware these days.
In no order:
Super Mario Galaxy - Even if the game goes totally tits up from the point I'm at on to its conclusion, it has still so far provided the best 3d platforming ever, and possibly the best platforming since Yoshi's Island. NINTENDO REDEEMED. SPACE JUNK GALAXY OMG MY THROBBING COCKUS!
Heavenly Sword - Ninja Theory's first noteworthy game is flawed and short, but it's an experience with exceptional presentation and a different take on combat. It's easy and fairly approachable, too (if you ignore the shitty demo).
Dynasty Warriors Gundam - Musou for the masses. A slightly different take on Musou with a slightly simplified formula. Also, it is basically animu porn. Whether you prefer scripted mission Musou, or more free for all, unscripted missions, this has got your boner licked.
Puzzle Quest - Oh yeah, I'm going there. The 360 version is the best, but the PSP and DS versions are no slouches either. The last quarter or so of the game drags on a bit too long, but what with it being a puzzle game, you could chip at it.
Blue Dragon - It's basically the best bits of old school JRPGs dressed up with super pretty graphics. The story, at times, is reminiscent of both Final Fantasy 4 and Dragon Quest 7. The combat system is basically FF5's. And Nobuo Uematsu proves that he just wasn't trying very hard on those last couple FF scores he did. Best JRPG in a long ass time. You can tell what gender every character is upon looking at them, a first for Japanese videogames.
Things that didn't make the cut.
Bioshock - I think you did just about everything right, but I just didn't enjoy you as much as I felt like I should. No offense! RIP Irrational.
COD4 - Honestly, I haven't played the full game. I will, but I think I might be. . .gasp. . .FPSed out. I am basically in this for multiplayer.
Halo 3 - Another game I haven't really cracked open. I will get to it when things slow down. Again, I think for the first time ever I might be FPSed out.
-
DW: GUNDAM O COURSE OMG OMG
-
Too soon, but Gundam Musou will be in my top five for sure.
-
Need more Naruto love!
-
I don't even consider Naruto a videogame anymore, man. It's like a philosophy.
-
That's the crappiest GOTY list I've ever seen. SMG is the only one that remotely resembles a GOTY candidate.
-
Virtua Fighter 5
-
Portal so far.
It was a triumph, i'm making a note here : huge success.
Ah yeah, I feel bad for not honoring Portal. Well, consider it a top 6, because I don't want any of my first 5 off.
Shut your gay face, Smooth. These are my favorite games of the year. Go catheterize your penis.
-
ive only played mario
-
i don't see atelier iris 3 on that list
as it stands, my vote goes to disgaea 2 or blue dragon
-

You can take HS off for dcharlie.
-
Too soon, but Gundam Musou will be in my top five for sure.
There's a month yet, it's close enough
What even came out this year? GOTY is Blue Dragon, period
Portal? A 5 hour romp. Not even close.
-

Portal isn't even 5 hours, hah. Maybe I should save that for my top 5 XBLA/downloadable games, since it is a mini.
And HS stays on, if only because I feel it gets disparaged by the populace too much. Reviews did greatly overrate it, though.
-
I haven't even played it. It's not that interesting, guys. Go play Blue Dragon instead.
-
Portal so far.

Orange Box has to be the greatest bargain ever. Sfags would rave endlessly about Portal if it were a PSN title. Even if it had cost $30.
I can't speak for SMG or Blue Dragon since my BD is still unopened and the local TRU didn't have SMG tonight but I'm certain that Orange Box is better than the rest of TVC's crap of the year candidates combined.
-
Orange Box doesn't even count - it's not a game.
-
I said they are my favorites of the year. I was unaware that "favorite" indicated that I was declaring an objective fact.
-
i guess my list at this point would be portal, halo 3, heavenly sword...uh...armored core 4? edf3?
that's...not too hot. there are at least four games from 2006 that would knock this list on its ass. no matter, i'm buying like five games this month, and hope to see some serious displacement
edit: oh wait, forgot sshd and everyday shooter. do games that don't cost $60 or come in boxes even count
-
I said they are my favorites of the year. I was unaware that "favorite" indicated that I was declaring an objective fact.
WTF would we care about the GOTY of one guy?
-
because it's a point of discussion -- i.e. the purpose of ANY web forum?
-
ooo, forgot about super stardust hd. that's up there, too.
-
edit: oh wait, forgot sshd and everyday shooter. do games that don't cost $60 or come in boxes even count
Sure, if people can wave GOTY flags about Portal, which has the value of an XBLA game, SSHD and such can too.
-
I like how smooth believes an entire forum could select a single goty
-
I think I might do a second list for XBLA/PSN stuff. I will exclude Puzzle Quest, though.
drohne: AC4 good? I got it cheap at Fry's, but I have never even unwrapped it.
-
AC4 is good IF you like AC games.
-
I'd go with Lost Planet myself, at least somewhere in my list this year.
good graphics, fun bosses, nice multi.
maybe next time they can hire a better writer but who cares.
-
\
drohne: AC4 good? I got it cheap at Fry's, but I have never even unwrapped it.
Eh, it was ok. Seemed to be lacking something from the previous AC games. Online was fun, though. Good thing you got it cheap.
-
I like how smooth believes an entire forum could select a single goty
Why not? We'll just come up with a list of candidates and then vote on it, like most magazines. Also, it's pretty sad that there's been no mention of any PC game even though we supposedly have a bunch of PC enthusiasts here.
-
I have to nominate skate and space giraffe, as they both saved me from becoming jaded and offing videogames for good.
-
it wasn't a great year for the pc, frankly. if rise of legends or company of heroes were this year, they'd knock everything off the list
-
i loved it, but frankly there's a whole lot wrong with it. the missions are as perfunctory as ever, the online is shockingly limited and unbalanced, and the controls will break your fingers. but it's got tons of visual style, there's something deeply compelling about kitting your mechs out, they've made it easy to build something that can fly around all day, and the very simplicity of the missions makes them highly replayable. it's also got the best achievements ever -- they point you to certain missions on hard, which really test your ability to build mechs situationally and then do cheapass shit with them. there's this one mission where you have to fight four partially-damaged high level mechs yourself. omg. so good.
-
Smooth: Yes, but we'd never all agree. Personalized GOTY threads are the way to go
-
it wasn't a great year for the pc, frankly. if rise of legends or company of heroes were this year, they'd knock everything off the list
Company of Heroes:Opposing Fronts was a standalone game. Also, the Witcher had nice presentation and is at least equally as fun as the other games on TVC's top 5.
-
i haven't played enough of the witcher to claim that it should be on the list, and you know why? it has TERRIBLE LOAD TIMES THAT MAKE ME NOT WANT TO PLAY IT, which disqualifies it right there. opposing fronts has terrible, terrible balance; same for asian dynasties.
i dunno if i'd agree with any title on tvc's list myself excepting blue dragon, but i also have very eclectic tastes. as maf said, i see no point in a forum goty, because it would in no way represent me. i'd rather argue over someone else's goty candidates.
-
so far it's honestly lost planet. I haven't finished any other game from this year though. seriously, we should wait a few months.
-
i liked lost planet too. and motorstorm. actually i've played a lot of good games this year...just nothing i'd want to put on top of a goty list. last year there were four games i wanted to put on top of a goty list: chromehounds, ultimate g+g, okami, and dead rising
capcom :bow

I haven't found The Witcher's loading times to be that annoying but my load times might be quicker because I use 4gbs. I'm surprised it loads so slowly even with your 10,000 RPM raid setup. Is it possible that the load times seem especially long because you've been playing a quick loading game like Titan Quest? The Witcher's load times seem fast compared to most console games.
-
They're patching the loading problem, its a known issue. Its kinda shelved till 1.2
-
yeah, i haven't been blown away this year. recently, my gaming time has been spent on a portable rehash (disgaea), a mediocre musou installation (orochi), some busted rts expansions (aoe:tas and coh:of), a middlling j-rpg (wa5), and a bunch of xbla/psn dual-stick shooters. that kinda sums up my entire gaming year, in a lot of ways.
-
WoW: Burning Crusade. So what if it was an expansion, it had an absurd amount of content. After that it's hard to pick a clear winner. I have issues with all of my possible candidates. My retro GOTY is Military Madness.
-
Drohne, what did you like about Lost Planet? I installed LP and then neglected it after reading all the bad reviews. Pretty graphics are usually enough for me to try a game but the majority of the PC reviewers really panned LP.
-
pretty graphics, certainly, but also big battlefields populated by big monsters and big mechs you can jump in and out of. the bosses don't telegraph their attacks and the enemy soldiers are dumb enough to be gaf regulars, but it's loads of fun anyway
game reviewers are twits
-
Lost Planet starts off REALLY REALLY awesome, but it kinda loses its steam quickly, between meh levels after a good start, and some buh gameplay decisions.
I liked it, and it deserved to be a hit, but they were wise to release it in a season when it had little competition.
-
The best games I've played this past year have been:
-Phoenix Wright 3
-Crackdown
-Bioshock
-Mario Galaxy
-Biohazard 4 Wii Wii
-Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles
-Halo 3
-Call Of Duty 4
-Musou Orochi
-Lost Planet (released right at the end of last year, so I'm counting it)
-KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A
So that means:
PSP- 1
DS- 1
PS2- 1
360- 5
PS3- 0
Wii- 2
And there's still more to come. I have a backlog of games I haven't really gotten around to, like Heavenly Sword, PGR4, and Orange Box, too. (Keep hearing how awesome Portal is!) And I still don't have Virtua Fighter 5 on Xbox 360 yet.
The most fun I've had this year has been with Crackdown, Mario Galaxy, Lost Planet, and Halo 3. I think CoD4 is going to be up there too.
Also unless Capcom somehow REALLY fucks it up, Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes is definitely going to be among my favorites. Gundam Musou? Orochi? DW6? Pffffft. Basara 2 kicks all their monkey asses and is the REAL "Musou for the masses." :bow
But like Drinky said, and despite some awesome games, this year has largely been a disappointment. Last year saw the (home) releases of awesome games like Godhand, KOF XI, MI2, SS Tenka, Sengoku Basara 2, Portrait Of Ruin, Lost Planet (hey, I'm counting it twice!), Gears, Tekken DR, and more.
-
What saddens me about GAF is how they say "WE DON'T NEED LP ON OUR PRECIOUS SONY PS3".
it's one of the best experience for me this year, and seeing this really piss me of, i mean it's not the best game ever, heck go on and say it's the worst piece of shit but we don't need it? come on, if anything, Sony are in need of more software.
-

Lost Planet was great fun for most of the game; really the only level I found mediocre was the last level, simply because after all the huge boss fights, it was like "this is it? A ZOE-like mech battle?" Also I had a BLAST with the game's multiplayer. I liked LP enough that I am even going to get the PS3 version next year. :o
And guys, let's see if we can just get off GAF already. Why keep bringing it up?
-
Mine are:
DW: Gundam
Luminous Arc
Disgaea
Orange Box (PC)
MLB07 The Show (PS3 version)
Virtua Fighter 5
-
well the combat was very good. the lack of checkpoints was absolutely fucking awful. enemy AI wasn't very good but surprisingly, the VS AI wasn't that bad. The akrid (bugs) are really fun to take on cause nearly every time you do, you know you're going to come up against bigger and bigger one you haven't seen. the boss battles are the best I've ever played. especially since a lot of them let you use a VS.
oh and forgot about RE4 wii wii. if that's counted than it's a contender. some didn't like the waggle aiming but I liked it more than the gamepad aiming.
-
Sengoku Basara 2 never came out in america, so it doesn't count.
-
ooh burn
-
And guys, let's see if we can just get off GAF already. Why keep bringing it up?
Sorry lyte. :-\
-
Interesting that after all the Bioshock hype n' wack off sessions, most people aren't putting it on their GOTY lists. It was awesome, guys...what happened??
am nintenho- RE4 Wii definitely counts. It's the definitive version of 2005's GOTY.
TVC- Japanese games count. :maf
-
You have to forgive me for being a bit dismissive of Sengoku Basara 2. Devil Kings blew ass, and I will never play the sequel, so I can never understand how much of an improvement it is.
-
I only listed stuff I spent a lot of time with really. For me games of the year are games I actually play for more than 5 hours lol.
-
yeah, devil kings was so fundamentally awful that i can't imagine part deux being even up to middling musou standards -- and sorry, lyte, but you and duckroll and the rest of the few basara 2 j-gaf set et al really have some dubious freakin' tastes, even by my wholly unorthodox standards.
-
yeah, chromehounds is fuckin legendary. best game this gen by far. i think i actually voted for okami in last year's gaf poll, but only because i'd just played it, and i tend to have those afterglow moments of irrationality in which the game i've just played seems like the best game ever -- sort of the way a girl i've just slept with seems for several moments to be intelligent and objectively beautiful
-
I only listed stuff I spent a lot of time with really. For me games of the year are games I actually play for more than 5 hours lol.
Sounds like you can squeeze Portal in there
-
I guess I'll give Lost Planet a real try since so many of you vouch for it. I usually trust PC reviewers because they're far less fanboyish than their console counterparts. Many console ports have been rated much lower by PC reviewers even when they were improved for the PC. But I guess some of the low scores could have been due to PC snobiness and not higher standards.
-
smooth, you might want to try a gamepad. lost planet was really designed for one and a mouse might cheapen the aiming too much considering how the enemies/vs are balanced.
chromehounds had awesome customization and multiplayer. people still play it online. you can get it for like $20 now too.
-
I hated chromehounds. I just remember joining the side that was getting dogpiled and walking around in a crappy desert with TVC.
-
Interesting that after all the Bioshock hype n' wack off sessions, most people aren't putting it on their GOTY lists. It was awesome, guys...what happened??
Bioshock's still my leading candidate for GOTY. I guess it's more important for some people to be an elitist or contrarian than to be real. I just tell it like it is. Bioshock is GOTY so far.
-
pc fanboys -- i'm sorry, pc elitists -- are as thoroughly full of shit as anyone else. perhaps more thoroughly, in that their self-esteem is more closely tied to their platform of choice. i wouldn't trust a word they say about anything that smells of consoles
-
Maybe Lost Planet on PC was a bad port?
You have to forgive me for being a bit dismissive of Sengoku Basara 2. Devil Kings blew ass, and I will never play the sequel, so I can never understand how much of an improvement it is.
.
yeah, devil kings was so fundamentally awful that i can't imagine part deux being even up to middling musou standards --
TVC, Prole, I know what you mean. I *HATED* Sengoku Basara. HATED HATED HATED HATED IT! But Basara 2 is just that awesome. I don't know what the hell happened or what Capcom did, but it's that good.
Devil Kings shouldn't even count as a real game. Capcom took Basara, hacked it up, taking out storyline and characters, and released it as the mess you know and despise.
Capcom is being distinguished mentally-challenged by not releasing the game in English. They should just put it out under a different name instead of "Devil Kings 2," and not try to change the story and characters around like distinguished mentally-challenged fellows.
and sorry, lyte, but you and duckroll and the rest of the few basara 2 j-gaf set et al really have some dubious freakin' tastes, even by my wholly unorthodox standards.
Don't lump me in with those guys, my tastes are entirely different. :punch :punch And FUCK IT'S THE GAF TALK AGAIN!!! :maf :'(
-
so what makes it better than musou, to you? i hated the goofy characters in devil kings, so i'm pre-emptively asking you NOT to mention characters as a plus.
-
Lost Planet on PC had issues with networking, but they fixed it IIRC.
plus you get to play as Frank West, Frank west as MM and Joe (LP character) and you have RE4 camera mode, all in one patch, 400mb i think.
LP is more suited to console in my own opinion, it's kinda gives you that contra arcade feel but in 3D and no COOP, sadly.
-
Maybe Lost Planet on PC was a bad port?
Nah, the graphics were even more beautiful in DX10 and 1080P w/AA is achievable on one 8800 GTX.
Amnintendho, I already have a wired 360 controller that I use on the PC. It's probably the best PC joypad ever. I even used it to play Bioshock the 1st time through.
pc fanboys -- i'm sorry, pc elitists -- are as thoroughly full of shit as anyone else. perhaps more thoroughly, in that their self-esteem is more closely tied to their platform of choice. i wouldn't trust a word they say about anything that smells of consoles
That sounds exactly like that Tekno-whatever dude at GAF. I loved PC gaming but it was insane of him to suggest that Trackmania was on the same level as the top console racers.
-
Smooth, try the demo if you haven't already.
LP is all about fighting huge bugs and mechs, the only part i hated (besides the story) was the human AI, really dumb.
all other enemies though had good AI.
-

I like 'most' of the PC dudes here, though. :heart
-
McDragon, Lost Planet PS3 is getting all the stuff that was added to the PC version.
so what makes it better than musou, to you? i hated the goofy characters in devil kings, so i'm pre-emptively asking you NOT to mention characters as a plus.
Like the characters in Musou are any less goofy? :lol (Disclaimer- I didn't even want to touch Devil Kings, so I don't know if they made the characters even worse)
It's the over-the-top look and feel of the game that I love so much, plus the smoother controls and more straight forward game play design. Basara 2 is more akin to a classic beat-em-up than a crowd-control battlefield fighter like Musou. You still take on hordes of enemies, but on a smaller scale. The enemy variety is greater and the levels are more interesting. You take on wacky sentai superhero-like Samurai, huge mechs, avoid giant cannonballs and even more massive snowballs, and collect shit-tons of gold to use to build up your stats and buy new items- and there's still stuff to earn by beating the stages. And I WILL mention the characters because their variety is better than any of the Musou games...different weapons and attack styles for all; the first game had a ton of clones, but they got rid of that in Basara 2. There's even one character who GRAPPLES and doesn't even use weapons, Zangief style.
It's just a hell of a lot more fun and enjoyable to play than any Musou title I've ever tried, and that includes the new Dynasty Warriors 6, and this forum's highly-worshipped Gundam Musou. The game oozes character and personality, too. Musou games are downright dull in comparison.
-
The PS3 shots of Lost Planet made me lol tho, wtf is up with some of them.
-
McDragon, Lost Planet PS3 is getting all the stuff that was added to the PC version.
Yup, and i might get it again but better to wait for reviews and more impressions about the graphics.
-
Smooth, try the demo if you haven't already.

all other enemies though had good AI.
I got the PC version when it was on sale, I just hadn't spend much time w/ it. I liked the 360 demo which is why the reviews were disappointing.

that doesn't sound like much of a mechanical improvement at all, and since i care fuck-all about the characters and any wackiness thereof, i don't think i'd like basara 2 much at all -- i NEED the added tactical and base capturing layer.
-
You NEED to try it. This is all I ask. I cannot recommend the game enough. Forget everything about the first Basara and give this game a try.
-
but the characters look distinguished mentally-challenged, and you say the mechanics are NOT an improvement on musou
edit: wait, is there some big-tit character in this game to drive you into paroxysms of praise
-
I hated chromehounds. I just remember joining the side that was getting dogpiled and walking around in a crappy desert with TVC.
well it's more of a mech sim.
now imagine that and having to coordinate with your squad depending on what size you are and what roles you need (most matches have 5 minutes before everybody readies up because they have to modify their mechs). yeah, it's not an easy game to get into. once you do get into a good squad and know every facet of the gameplay and get matched against a good squad though, it's sex.
but yeah, sal kar gets like no love. it's hard to get their good weapons but most of the useful weapons are I think in tarakia (usually the winner).
-
yeah, everybody in my squad had at least a couple pre-made rigs. plus for something like a commander, a lot of them are easy to quickly modify if you shave off the heavy weapons and just leave on a couple machine guns. the problem is that if you did have to start a new mech, a lot times (especially with ones that have artillery weapons) you have to do a field test to see how the aiming and recoil feels.
my one squadmate had this awesome emblem he made that said fukurmom. I need to ask him for it.
-
Man, Super Mario Galaxy makes my wee cock so hard!
-
but the characters look distinguished mentally-challenged, and you say the mechanics are NOT an improvement on musou
It's Musou on steroids. It also offers multiple SELECTABLE Musou-super style attacks, which can be used to create ridiculously huge combos.
Check out these videos:

:lol My favorite character is Maeda Keiji-- Who wields a big-ass fuckin' sword and has a lil' monkey on his shoulder. Maybe it's the HOT MONKEY LOVE that has me hooked?
-

Koeiwarriors Sez:
Sengoku BASARA is a game made by Capcom, and produced by Mr. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the same producer of Capcom's famous Devil May Cry series. Its gameplay is similar to KOEI's Shin Sangoku Musou (Dynasty Warriors) and Sengoku Musou (Samurai Warriors): a Hack'n'Slash game. It also shares the same timeline as Sengoku Musou, the Sengoku Jidai occured in Japan during 16th century. However, what distinguishes Sengoku BASARA from KOEI's games is the stylish aspect. The moves in this game are made as stylish as the ones you can see in DMC; and Mr. Makoto Tsuchibayashi who drew Dante is the one who makes all the characters' eccentric designs.
The first game was released on July 21st 2005, and received quite a favorable response from the Japanese gamers. However for some reason, Capcom decided to scrap the historical aspect of the game when they were trying to bring it overseas. They tweaked Sengoku BASARA into Devil Kings for the Western market.
One year after SB1 was released in Japan, Capcom launched the sequel, Sengoku BASARA 2, which was released on July 27th 2006. This new game has much more volume and replayabilty than its prequel.
Modes
Sengoku BASARA 2 has three times the replayability of its prequel. Two new modes and 48 stages are available on this game.
Aside from the Unification Mode and Free Battle Mode, there are now Story Mode and Arena Mode. Story Mode is the equivalent of DW&SW's Musou Mode, where you follow your character's story by going through 5 to 6 stages. Arena Mode (named Daibutoukai) is a 100-stage survival mode that Shin Onimusha players may find it similar to the Dark Realm.
Characters and Enemies
There is a total of 30 unique characters in this game. All 21 unique characters -PCs and NPCs- from the prequel are making a return. But first of all, the two popular NPCs from SB1, Chousokabe Motochika and Mouri Motonari, are now playable. There were also issues of clone characters which were Kenshin-Matsu and Sasuke-Kasuga.. Not anymore. Matsu now holds a naginata and can summon animals, while Kasuga now carries kunais. Kenshin and Sasuke still have their old weapons.
There are 4 brand-new playables. The first one is Maeda Keiji, the kabukimono all of you should have known by now. Then there's Toyotomi Hideyoshi, accompanied by his strategist, Takenaka Hanbei. Last but not least, Miyamoto Musashi is also in this game, although he just serves as an extra character to please you Musashi-philes. (He does not have a story nor element, and he only has two skills at all)
There are 5 new NPCs. Other than Katakura Kojuurou, Masamune's retainer, there are Azai Nagamasa, O-Ichi, Fuuma Kotarou and Honganji Kennyo.
There are also new kinds of enemies, such as fire ninjas, ice ninjas, oni soldiers, dragon tanks, and perhaps the most famous of them all is the Gohonyari, a squad of five spearmen that may remind you of Power Rangers.
Gameplay
The gameplay is still similar to the prequel, however there are now some new features, including Battle Drive, a hyper-mode-activation system similar to DW5's Musou Awakening and Basara Fever, a combo hit ranker taken from Devil Kings and will give you coins for each hits after every 500 hits.
Coins? Yes, there is now money in this game, and you can use them to shop in the Basara Shop which sells things like stat-increasing foods, weapons and armors, as well as special items. Speaking of items, they're still generated randomly from treasure boxes. However in this sequel, the boxes are now divided into two categories: Item Box and Equipment Box. Also, useless boxes will be automatically converted into money or experience points.
And speaking about EXP, the maximum level your character can get now is 100.
Others
The music is, once again, varied. You can hear many genres of music from this game's BGMs; from rock, techno, to even jazz. Some of the music from SB1 are returning. But sadly, some other favorite themes such as Thunderbolt aren't.
This game only has one minus point for me, which is the lack of art from its prequel. Unlike in SB1, now you can only see the 3D rendition of the characters in all places; the only place you can see the artful 2D drawings is in the Character Introduction movie accessible from the Gallery.
And last but not least, although this game only has a few historical accuracies compared to Sengoku Musou, some of the stories and dialogues are humorous, such as when one of Zabii's followers says "No Zabii, No Life!" So in the end, if you want to play a stylish and fun hack'n'slash game, go get this game.
Musou games don't have enemies like this:

Or weapons like this:

Or attacks like this:

BASARA 2!

:bow :bow :bow
Oh, and every character has three sets of armor and eight weapons to get. And you want skill? Play the ARENA MODE! It's not you fighting dumb guards...you cut right to the chase and engage in combo-filled fighting game-like battles against other main characters!
-
If Etrian Odyssey came out this year then I say its that
-
You NEED to try it. This is all I ask. I cannot recommend the game enough. Forget everything about the first Basara and give this game a try.
I don't think Prole can play import games anyway, so unless the game somehow gets a US release, he won't play it (not that he sounds particularly interested).
-
Bioshock.
By a large fucking margin.
-
The Orange Box (PC) and Bioshock (PC) stand out as two games that really impressed me to the point where I would grade them a clear notch above everything else I played so far this year. I'd give my tip of the hat to Valve for making three new games-Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Episode 2-where I really couldn't even go back and say "man I wish this could have been done this way or that way". It was pretty much perfect as is.
-
-Crackdown
-Dead Rising
-Blue Dragon
-Persona 3
-Taito Legends 2
-Raiden III
-God Hand
-Panzer Dragoon Saga
-Halo 3
-Bioshock
Good year for me. I still need CoD4 and Orange Box. Maybe Xmas!
-
I'm sure my tastes are crap for this board but for me the most enjoyment I've gotten out of the games that I've played this year...
Skate
Puzzle Quest
Fifa 08 (this probably has more to do with this is the first futbol game I've played in 4 or 5 years)
However, I think the best game I've played this year was sadly...
The Warriors
Not sure what took me so long to play that, but talk about a game that just gets just about everything right!
-
Thinking about it, the vast, vast majority of my gaming time this past year has been spent playing games from 2006.
I'm sure my tastes are crap for this board but for me the most enjoyment I've gotten out of the games that I've played this year...
No, this board is largely above that kind of fanboy nonsense crap. We just poke fun. :)
-
Most folk around here love Skate and Puzzle Quest.
your taste are certainly not crap.
-
I still haven't played the Warriors yet. :-[
-
My favorite games I've played this year
COD4 (although I haven't touched SP)
Puzzle Quest (although it's too long...but like TVC said, you can pick at it)
Bioshock (although not the second coming of Christ or anything)
Orange Box (although I've only played Portal and TF2...HL2 is technically a part of it, too, right?)
Out of those, I have to say the Orange Box is the best, but I don't think I can count all those games together. It's a collection of awesome games. I'd then have to pick COD4.
-
I still haven't played the Warriors yet. :-[
GET IT. Get it for xbox
-
My favorites so far are Blue Dragon, Mario Galaxy, and Etrian Odyssey... a lot of this year has been me catching up on games from the past few years.
I have yet to play Portal, HL2:Episode 2 (getting Orange Box for Christmas), Bioshock, or Contra IV.
-
I THINK MY TASTES ARE MORE QUESTIONABLE THAN URS BALI!
-
I'm sure my tastes are crap for this board
I think we all have our own personal, sometimes shitty tastes here. On Evilbore, it's OK to play a 6/10 game and enjoy the hell out of it if it tickles your fancy. Heck, here are some of my GREATEST HITS that I played and enjoyed this year:
Lawnmower Racing Mania 2007 (surprisingly fun)
War Front: Turning Point (eastern bloc WW2 weirdness RTS)
Sonalysts' Dangerous Waters (enjoy the awesomeness of modern naval warfare by staring at sonar waterfall displays. Oh, and late 90s visuals)
Earth 2160 - silly complex eastern european RTS with generic scifi setting
I am going to tackle a heavily modded install of UFO Extraterrestrials over Christmas, a game that got like a 5.2 from gamespot. It's gonna be 110% awesome too.
-
I'm sticking to my guns with Bioshock. A bit overhyped and slightly overrated, but still the best thing I've played all year by a large margin. Portal, COD4, Virtua Fighter 5 Online, and Puzzle Quest round out the top 5 of the moment. Honorable mention to Team Fortress 2.
I probably won't get an opportunity to play UR MR GAY or Mass Erect this year. :(
-
Lawnmower Racing. That's fucking awesome. :lol I saw that on ESPN2 once.
-
Honestly? For me, it was Crackdown. That game was just pure fun for me. I explored every nook and cranny of the city, and kept playing long after I'd beaten the main adventure (which wasn't that great). I'd pop it in every day just to jump around the city and cause destruction for a few minutes. I was constantly finding new tricks to do with the powers. I've since sold it, but I sort of regret selling it now, and when it gets in the $10 range I'll pick it up again and keep it for good this time.
Bioshock was a fantastic experience overall, but the combat got a bit repetitious, and the last fifteen or so minutes of the game were a huge letdown.
Halo 3, I just wasn't feeling it. Same as it ever was. I still haven't dipped into the online stuff.
Orange Box is up there, but I'd played HL2 before. As far as value goes, it definitely wins on that.
COD4? Beat it, sold it. Gameplay-wise it's the same COD as ever, only five hours shorter and reskinned with a modern setting. I played 2 games online, and both times ran into typical XBL shitheads. That was enough for me. I'm just over competitive MP on consoles, I think. I've always had better experiences on PC - the communities are much nicer, by and large.
-
If Etrian Odyssey came out this year then I say its that
Fuck, forgot about that, too.
Who cares what you like, folks? You like what you like. Nobody could hold me to blame or make me feel ashamed that some of my favorite games of the past year are more objectively mediocre than they are dictionary great, and I see no problem with admitting there were great games that came out this year that I just personally did not enjoy. Nothing wrong with either of those things.
-
I'd put Bioshock first as an individual game, but if taken as a whole The Orange Box wins out just for sheer quantity of awesomeness.
-
here are my favorites of the year:
consoles:
skate
portal
super mario galaxy
bioshock
crackdown
virtua tennis 3
digital devil saga (yea i know it's old, but i only played it this year!)
handhelds/downloads:
picross
puzzle quest
dj max portable 2
super stardust hd
so far i think either skate or bioshock are my top picks for single goty (special mention for dds :bow). mass effect is still up for grabs, i hope it's a great game.

That's how I was feeling when deciding to pick up COD4 or Fifa 08. I just couldn't imagine it being that much different from previous versions, and I figured the multi would just be mired with the typical a-holes. FPS online are an absolute blast when you have the right people in on the session. Just seems like those sessions are getting quite further between nowadays. I'm sure it's mostly because I'm becoming a crotchety old man. :tophat
-
Virtua Fighter 5 and Sega Rally Revo are my GOTY's. I may add NFS ProStreet to that list if it's awesome. :-*
-
-Bioshock
-Crackdown (Loved it, but never finished off the last gang)
-VF5
-Ouendan 2
My candidates so far...
I haven't played SMG, Halo 3, Orange Box, Uncharted, or Ratchet. I'll probably won't play those games this year as I have to complete my backlog first.
-
EDF3 or whatever, it's basically what musuo games would be if they didn't suck shit. Orange Box and VF5 are also up there.
:bow $30
-
Right now, it would be:
Persona 3
Another Century's Episode 3: The Final
Gundam Musou
Ratchet and Clank Future: TOD
Call of Duty 4
Still waiting for Uncharted and Rock Band, though.
Blue Dragon would definitely be on there if I had a 360. The two hours I've spent on it thanks to my 360-owning cousin were awesome.
-
WTMF man, Portal all the goddamn way to 2008. Why isn't it on the OP list?!
-
Right now my list is:
Blue Dragon
Mario Galaxy
Super Stardust HD
I hate choosing one over the other since they're all great games in their own distinctive ways.
Edit:Just scratched BioShock off the list now that I've played more of it. Great atmosphere, questionable design choices.
-

Wait, what? It's nothing like a Musou game. And it's a budget game that was released at a higher price (yes, even the $30 U.S. price is too high compared to the $20 previous versions). Plus EDF2 on PS2 is the better game...it may look worse, but it has another playable character and more weapons.
-

did EDF 2 have 60 fps (I keed), and were the weapon/difficulty levels pretty balanced? how was the co-op?

EDF2 is like 15 fps. Maybe. :) EDF3 came off as EDF2 with slightly better visuals and a much better frame rate, but no Gullwing (the female character with different weapons and a JET PACK- FUCK YEAH!!).
I'm not a big fan of these games in the first place though. I got EDF2 only because at the time, everyone was raving about it on GAF, so I took the plunge.
The best Simple 2000 games are the EDF and Oneechanbara titles, and they're both mediocre action titles. You can do a lot better.
-
EDF is actually a really good party game. anybody can get into it. 4 buttons ffs, plus the concept is stupidly fun. it's more like playing a side-scrolling shooter with co-op than a action game.
-
Mass Effect will (hopefully) be the game of the fucking forever. I rarely ever get into pre-release hype but this game has me springing boners like a 14-year old in summertime.
After that,
Bioshock, Halo 3, Crackdown, Orange Box, Empire Earth III, Command & Conquer Tiberium, Super Stardust HD in some order.
Might make my top-10 and still need to play: SM Galaxy, Zelda DS, Uncharted, Crysis, Sim City Societies, Blue Dragon, VF5
I enjoyed stuff like Forza, PGR3, CoD4, Skate, Guitar Hero 3... but definitely not t-10 material.

you didn't tell me you played p3 :-\

Oh my, assassin's creed is awesome

Just as planned.

COD4:
I have been waiting so long for this game. I skipped COD3, but I loved the hell out of COD2's singleplayer. The multiplayer in 4 is insanely addicting, fast paced, and geniusly built with battlefield 2 kind of rank and unlock system. The last multiplayer game I loved was battlefield 2 and 2142, so this game was awesome.
The single player is all I ever wanted out of a single player. I want moments where so many things are happening, with shots flying everywhere, team mates doing whatever the fuck they are doing, explosions etc.
Final exams are starting to come around, so I'll have to wait a while to play SMG, Uncharted, and Mass effect. NOT ENOUGH TIME. :'(
-
you'll hate single player if you play it on veteran. it would've probably made my GOTY list but veteran left such a bad taste in my mouth. :yuck
otherwise, great game all around.

Easily CoD4 for me, as close as a CS killer has gotten. Still weaker due to alot of imba issues and nade spam. Its fucking great though, despite me having trouble getting good at it. Getting use to tf2 took me like 3 sessions lol. Im having trouble shaking off 1:1 K:Ds in this :(
LOLZ SILLY TVC DIDNT MENTION ORANGE BOX.
Even if you would put OB in the mix, still CoD 4 :(.
-
warcock :heartbeat
One of my buddies who played cs says the same thing.
(but he's playing on 360 with me) :o :-*

I haven't played a musou game since DW2 excluding the N3 demo so my opinion on them might be off, but isn't it the same principle (slaughtering a bunch of remedial underpowered enemies) just with guns opposed to swords? Budget or not I easily had more fun with that game than I did with most of the other releases this year, although CoD4, VF5, and TF2 are indeed awesome.

Cajole i feel sad for you in all your cod4 love. Dude mouse/key difference = heaven and earth. But i dunno i mean does it matter if you dont play competitively? Prolly not. It makes the game that much more involved though. FPSs for warcock are serious buisness so eh. I hate nade spam.
-
I know you're serious business. It's why I love you.
And nah, I don't play competitively. Never have, never will. Probably why it doesn't matter. Of course, I prefer a mouse and keyboard, it's why you saw me playing TF2 on my PC (even though it's a piece of shit) instead of the 360. On the other hand, I have a half dozen friends that will own COD4 and it will all be on 360. So of course I'll get it for that besides the point that my laptop won't run it anyhow.
PS: Feel sorry for my friend as well. He built a gaming PC a couple of years back but stopped using it and games pretty much exclusively on his 360 now. He played the COD4 beta and loved it and loves the game now of course.
