PS3 catches a lot of shit around here (deservedly so most of the time), so in the interest of me having nothing better to do at this particular moment, I've decided to start this thread about the good points of the PS3.
1. Wireless - it may suck for games (dunno, haven't played online yet), but it's pretty cool to WiFi some pics and music to it. And speaking of pics...
2. Picture viewer - it scales really, really well, and quickly. I like being able to set wallpaper from my picture files. This is my current wallpaper:
3. PSP integration - To be honest, I haven't messed with this yet because I'm selling the PSP (I'll probably get one of the newer models sometime next year - maybe), but this weekend I think I'm gonna play around with it a little, and download a PS1 game to try. What the hell, I probably blow $6 in the course of a day without even realizing it. I don't know what game to download, though. Regardless, it's pretty cool that it's there to use if you want.
4. Blu Ray player - it's sharp. TVC was right, HD makes (almost) everything better. Now I'm getting impatient to see more classic movies released in HD format. And the controller works pretty well as a basic remote (dunno if I want to spend $25 to add that bluetooth remote). PS3 also does a really good job upscaling DVDs.
5. The game icons - I know, it doesn't mean much of shit for functionality, but it's kind of neat to see that thumbnail video running on your games list.
Besides the games (lol whut games), what do you guys like about the PS3?
-
Backwards compatibility annnd annnnd
-
1. its inferior rendering hardware makes sony fans spin up ludicrous analyses for me to lol at
2. i never get tired of dx8-era stencil shadows -- okay, yes, i do, but i enjoy the nostalgia of 2003's pc tech
3. a hard drive sku without a defrag option is so stupid a decision that it makes my corporate master's decisions look smart
4. it's, uh, reliable, although the lack of a solid library means that i'll never have to subject it to the rigors of being regularly powered on
5. it has super stardust hd exclusivo for now
bonus #6: best version of goty bladestorm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Wow, you really can't defrag the hard drive? To borrow a phrase from abrader, that's fukkin stupid
-

How do you upload pics to your PS3 via wifi?
BTW, I'm curious, say you didn't have a 360 and you could only either have a PS3 or wii for the rest of the generation, which would you choose?
-
ps3, hands down
well, i mean, ps3, <more relatable idiom here>
-
backwards compat oh wait
-
PS3, of course. PS2 BC (well, mine has it lol), multimedia functionality (bubububu Wii has SD cardz), Blu Ray player, 360 portz, and possibly a few good originals. Get a Wii a year from now for $99 off ebay, after all those soccer moms get tired of looking at it and realize they haven't turned it on in 6 months.
Oh, you just set up a media server from your PC to your PS3 to stream pics. It's pretty self-explanatory. You have to have a wireless router, of course.
-
Media Center to 360 is pretty good on wireless and will supposedly support divx soon. I used to watch wmvs over wireless with media center and it was flawless. You can also link it to your mp3 library.
PS3 is neat n all, but its not doing anything new, and I prefer the Media Center interface anyway
-
Yeah, but you have to buy a dongle with 360 to do wireless.
Actually, none of that wireless stuff should really matter to me anyway, since I have my PC in the living room. I just like having one less wire in the bird's nest I have going on behind the TV.
But between Wii and PS3, PS3 all the way. Between Wii and shooting yourself in the dick, you should ask yourself how much you really use your dick anyway.
-
How do I setup a media server? I'm using XP.
-
Well yeah, Wii sux for hardware
-
It's a shame that consumers are so fucking stupid to say "But...but...it's the gameplay that matters!"
Seriously, I never understood Nintendos "going after non-gamers" philosophy, so what if you get grandpa joe to get a Wii, do you think he's going to buy games/peripherals on a regular or even a semi-regular basis? Fuck no!
-
The gameplay does matter, its just most people wouldnt know it if they saw it.
-
Uh, go into your PS3 setting, scroll down to Network settings, scroll down to Media Server settings and select "enabled." Then search for media servers, and your PC should show up. You'll have to turn off your PC firewall first.
-
I'm still learning how to use the PS3 media stuff, really. MAF is right, 360 is much easier to use as a whole because it integrates with your Media Center software. PS3 is browse, scroll, browse, scroll to get anywhere.
-
The gameplay does matter, its just most people wouldnt know it if they saw it.
Well I was mainly stating that consumers don't demand good gameplay AND graphics, there's no reason we shouldn't have the best of everything.
-
1. The overpriced PS3 shows what a great value the 360 is.
2. PS3's lackluster exclusives show how awesome the 360 exclusives are.
3. PS3's inferior multiplatform games show how well done the 360 multiplatform games are.
4. The terribly designed Sixaxis shows what an incredible controller the 360 has.
5. PS3's poorly supported 1080P makes us appreciate the awesomeness of 360's ability to ouput everything in 1080P.
6. Mediocre PS3 graphics make the amazing 360 graphics look even more amazing.
7. The paucity of PSN makes us wonder at the peerless content of XBL.
There're many more but I'm too tired to do them tonight. Also, I agree with everything on the list of internet legend Drinky Crow.
-
I didn't think the Wii had particularly good gameplay in the few hours I owned it. There was something off about the remote, and no matter how much I tried to adjust it never felt very accurate. I'm not gonna shit all over anyone who owns one (although I will take some tongue-in-cheek shots now and then), but it just wasn't for me at all.
I still want to play MOH: Heroes 2, tho
-
haha, neither one does 1080p, not really, edit that and strikethrough pal
-
360 upscales everything to 1080P while the PS3 only upscales a few PS3 games. It does make a difference since most TVs have really crappy scalers. Even on my 2006 top of the line 1080P Bravis, the picture looks better when the 360 is doing the upscaling. On my 24" monitor, the 360's upscaling makes a even bigger difference. My monitor, like most monitors, is really terrible with non-native resolutions.
-
most next gen games run kinda weird at 1080p anyway, gonna sit at 720p til next next gen ;)
-
On the one hand the Wii is the first system I can play with my hand so that's cool.
It's really funny how crazy N fans are though, I have an ex friend that wanted a Wii more than anything and said the 360 and PS3 were worthless and how he couldn't wait for SMG, and SSBB. When he heard that SSBB was pushed back to February he told me he was going to get a 360 with bioshock and I told him how he told me the 360 was worthless and he says "well, the 360 has bioshock, it's the only good game". Bear in mind last gen he only had a gamecube and couldn't play any m rated games.
-
most next-gen games can only run at 1080p on the PC! Seriously though, 360's upscaling from 720P to 1080P is much better than I expected. The picture is just a lot less fuzzy when I set it to 1080p instead of 720p.
I'm not even sure if we'll get true 1080P in the next gen because of consoles' budget constraints. Sure, the GPUs will be faster but then the devs are just going to push them some more. But that's okay, because 720P w/upscaling is good enough for most TV-viewing distances.
-
Truth be told, I love my PS3 a ton. It may not get the great games in abundance, and 360 will always be the multiplatform system of choice for me, but the PS3 has enough exclusives for me to remain interested. I still think when the generation ends and the numbers are added up, PS3 will likely be the system to own for JRPGs, and Sony's own studios have grown rather formidable since the PS1 days. Plus BLU RAY!!!

I just played the Blazing Angels 2 demo on PS3. OMG OMG OMG. Understand that I have never been able to grasp the controls on a flight game, ever. Can't wrap my head around them, always crash, always end up saying "FUCK THIS SHIT" and selling them the day after I buy them. But I've always wanted to be able to play them, because they look like they're so much fun if you understand the controls, plus many much WWII flight games. So I figured I'd give it one more chance and see if the sixaxis could make my monkey hands work.
After playing the demo, I have to say that this is one of the things (maybe the only thing) the sixaxis motion control excels at. I can finally play a flight game without constantly cursing it. Seriously, and I am not kidding in the slightest, this is worth at least 50% of the PS3 purchase price to me. It was so smooth. With the way the controller's shaped, it feels sort of like you're holding the plane in your hands, and everything just clicked inside my head. I only crashed once, and that was only because I was trying to show off and couldn't pull out of a dive in time. I felt like a little kid.
Plus, the sequel doesn't have as much cringe-worthy dialogue as the first, and the graphics are decent. Cockpit view OMG OMG OMG.
I'm totally buying this game. It may not be the best flight game in the world, or even make the top 50 in any lists, but it's the first one I've ever been able to play. Maybe I can scrounge up some bullshit to trade for it. If not, and I can't get Rock Band next week, then I'm all over some BA 2.
PS3 just went up a few points games-wise for me. Still a barren wasteland for software, but at least now there's an experimental jet flying over it.

Sounds to me you're getting too old for gaming, maybe slower puzzle games are more your type old man :)

Ha, eat a dick up 'til you hiccup, Synbios
Anyway, another thing to like about PS3 (well, Sony in general this time): stuff in the mail. I get stuff from Sony in the mail all the time. Last year I got a bunch of coupons for PS2 games, then a week ago I got the God of War PSP demo/keychainwhatever, and just today I got their holiday PS3 guide with a coupon inside for $10 off a PS3 game. Microsoft never sends me shit, except for a letter once a year reminding me that I owe them another $50 for Live. So, today, :heart Sony for knocking $10 off BA 2.
-
The media player/viewer.
i wish the 360 can get the same photo viewer, and i love the toggle repeat option when watching videos.
MS please make it better :-\
-
it's aesthetically more appealing than the 360 IMO

Be careful. This is how those slimy Japs slowly turn you into the deplorable creature known as a Sfag.

It's shiny and you can kinda see inside of it. I wish the 360 had the same thing going on just in a high gloss white.
So? I play a game console, not make out with it. Besides, the PS3 looks like a Foreman grill, which doesn't look plesant to anyone with good taste.
-
I actually think the 360 looks more beautiful.
and i love the detachable HDD, very handy when visiting my friends.
-

Nah, just credit where it's due. Sony catches a lot of deserved shit, but they are attentive to their customers regarding email updates and offers/coupons in the mail.
Still :heart the 360 more than any other console I've ever owned.
-
Eel_O_Brian maybe its time you visit an old folks home and play a game of checkers.

Sony should spend more time on the important stuff like MS, such as making sure their platform gets good games. The PS3 sucks because Sony spends too much time on PR & propaganda.

Do you really, really want me to jump on board the "flipperbaby" bandwagon? I've been purposely avoiding doing so because you get more than your share of online brutalizing, but keep it up, kid.
-
Well, Smooth, you're obviously never going to cut them any slack on anything they do, so it's pointless continuing this discussion with you.
-
I'll cut them some slack when I start seeing the power of the CellTM and Blu-rayTM that Sony keeps talking about. The PS3 has been out for a year and it still doesn't have one exclusive that's higher than 90% on Gamerankings.
-
eob, this is smooth's schtick. we're not entirely sure how much of it he actually believes, but i find taking joke characters at face value the easiest route.
-
I play PS3 more than you play the WII, Prole, so don't even question my credibility! Besides, I was one of the few that gave R&C any respect.

You can't possibly seriously base your game purchases on Gamerankings.
-

Eh, I'm just not into trolling anymore. I'd rather talk about good things than focus on the negative at this point in my life. I used to be a pretty good troll, though - a few years ago I made one guy so mad on a messboard he seriously threatened to sue the forum owner and got IP banned.
-
I don't base all my purchases on gamerankings but it's undeniably a good indicator of a system's quality. Most gamers would place last gen in this order 1)PS2, 2)XBOX, 3)GC and that's backed up by gamerankings. Also, there're high correlations between high gamerankings scores and awards/popularity. The PS3 was supposed to be the greatest thing ever. Yet 1 year later, there's still no >90 game. Any unbiased gamer has to be more than a little disappointed in the PS3 so far. It's not trolling if it's true.
-
if you based your purchases on gamerankings, you'd be a total ninthing or dreamcast fanboi

i'm getting the same way -- if someone is going to troll, it had best be incredibly clever rather than the same contrarian nonsense that makes gaf particularly untenable. here, i generally post honestly, the occasional wii ding aside (because i really do hate the wii hardware as well as its software direction). i just don't feel like processing snark every single place i go on the internet.
-
Most of the games I like don't get awards or high ranks, so that's why it's all pretty meaningless to me.
-
Like I said, I don't buy a game just because it gets good scores. But reviews have much more value than internet gaming snobs give them credit for. I've yet to try a <60% game that didn't deserve it. OTOH, I might not like a >90% game but I can at least see that it's somewhat good.
-
If I get selected for that Amazon customer vote and have a chance to get the Wii for $79, I'm flipping that fucker on ebay as fast as I can flip it.
Smooth, I see where you're coming from, but keep in mind my favorite games are WWII shooters and those rarely get ranked above 60-70%
Prof, there are some clever career trolls still left here and there, but they're hard to find amongst the photoshop memers and drooling illiterati

Trolling :rock
-
it's the anihawk one-liner set that annoy me the most. in fact, it was demi what brought that to gaf -- with class and style! -- but it's anihawk that popularized it as a form of idiot non-conversation.

-
anihawk occasionally dispenses with the evasive gamefaqs snark and bleats out apologism for godawful animu games like xenosaga 3, and of course the zelda titles. these "reviews" are almost always useless and shallow observations, and its rare that he doesn't punctuate them with some snarky concluding sentence that lets him get an out should anyone suspect he really MIGHT be total animu fanboy twat.

Where did you find out about that Amazon deal? Hook me up. I hope to pick up some HD movies and computer gear next Friday.
What are the crappy WWII shooters that you're talking about? MOH and COH usually get good to great reviews.

Smooth - http://promotions.amazon.com/gp/holiday/amazon-customers-vote
They're only doing 1000, and they're selecting randomly from the voters
Every console MOH review I've ever read gives them about a 7, or a 7.5 - once in a while an 8 - and on the current sliding review scale that's about on par with a 5
-
Thanks but I meant other deals. Did you just find out about that on Amazon or is there some site that lists all the Thanksgiving deals?

www.bfads.net - they have scans of a lot of store flyers
I actually found out about the Amazon thing from GAF

Great! Thanks, Eel.

easy to switch controller allocations
There're so many problems with the sixaxis that I wouldn't want to praise the PS3 for any controller related feature. My sixaxis went crazy the last couple of days and I had to keep plugging it in and out of the PS3. Finally, I figured out it was because the Wii had been hooked up to my monitor. I never noticed this problem because the WII hasn't been turned on for a couple of months. Funny how I had no such problem with the WII when I was playing Mr Gay. Sony talks all that tech bullshit yet they can't even get something as simple as wireless control to work properly.
-
Oh, I am also generally a fan of XMB. . .at least in comparison to the confusing, ad covered 360 dashboard. XMB could be streamlined and made a bit less confusing if they, well, put like 4 minutes of effort into it.
-
game region free ("rumoured" to be coming to an end)
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo
That was one of the big selling points for me. :'(
-
Things I like about the PS3:
The Blu Ray Player:
I was never really a fan of DVDs, nor could I be assed about buying them, but I dunno I like the thought of pristine picture quality/sound quality. Plus it now allows me to catch up on things since I wasn't an avid DVD owner, I can kinna get the backlog as they come out.
The Interface:
Slick. Classy. and looks really nice on my TV - I don't get the critisim with the XMB I think it functions rather...well easy. I just everything is so easy to access; music, pictures, video - it's really all very simple, and the changing colors background is really cool.
Things I don't like:
The Community:
There's no one ever on this fucking thing, or maybe I'm just not when others are on - I have a good 40 people on my list and I'll be lucky to bump into them once or twice.
Nothing to Play:
Well maybe that's my fault I still have to get Uncharted & Rachet, but I'm holding out for a Black Friday PS3 sale, and if nothing meh. I know Toys R Us is doing BTGOF on Wii games next week, I was going to hold out on PS3 maybe would have a week so I could get: Uncharted, Rachet, and Call of Duty 4.
The Blu Ray Player:
Sometimes I think that maybe movies are more the focus of the Playstation than rather the games, also it kept the price from being consumer friendly out the door which might have hurt them in the long term, but we don't know yet. - it's a positive and a negative this damn Blu Ray.
-
I really like the XMB, but I've been a long-time PSP owner and heavy player, so I'm probably more acclimated than some. Aside from that I really like the dependability of the hardware. Any multiplatform game that is essentially on parity between PS3 and 360 I get for the PS3. I don't feel like I have to baby the hardware like I do with my 360.
-
I like how it's obviously designed by home theatre nerds and is an excellent home theatre component.
I LIKE THE BIG SCREEN, SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN, P-S-P, P-S-P, P-S-P oh wait.
-
Like:
-Region-free gaming
-PS1/2 backwards compatibilty is awesome. Most games look awesome upscaled and some even load faster (or much faster, like in NeoGeo Battle Coliseum's case)
-The system is incredibly quiet.
-Free online play and web browser
-Blu-Rays are the same region in the U.S. as Japan
-DVD upscaling is great
-Downloadable games are not limited by size, and so we get amazing console quality titles like Tekken 5 DR and Warhawk.
-Hardware seems to be well-made and more reliable than the XBox 360. I'm not worried about my PS3 dying on me like I am with my (second) 360.
-Changing out the hard drive is easy and can be done with a variety of brands; you can get a 160gb HD for your PS3 for almost half the cost of what M$ sells the 120gb 360 HD for.
-Game installs to reduce load or elminate load times.
Dislike:
-WHERE ARE THE FUCKING GAMES?
-No one is ever fucking online or playing anything on my friends list! The online community is awful, but that can easily be blamed on the lack of anything to really play.
-WHERE ARE THE FUCKING GAMES?
-Having to resynch the controller when playing PS1/2 games and then going back to the XMB sucks.
-WHERE ARE THE FUCKING GAMES?
Also- WHERE ARE THE FUCKING GAMES? :punch
The potential is there for this system to be so awesome. But there's just so little worthwhile software that has been released for this system, and it doesn't feel like there's much on the horizon coming either. The only exclusive games that come to mind are Tekken 6 and MGS4. Everything else I'm interested in is also coming out on the 360, like DMC4 and Soul Calibur IV. I'm the kind of guy that blows his money on just about everything that comes out. And even then, after a year, I don't own many PS3 games. The system gets used mainly for movies and PS2 games.
The Wii was also quite lacking in quality games, but recently this has changed. I'm still waiting for this to happen with the PS3. Sony needs to stop making 845236 different SKUs for their hardware and get on the games already.
game region free ("rumoured" to be coming to an end)
Where did you hear this? :o :'( I really, really hope that isn't true. :-\
-
Well, it's more powerful than Wii, at least.

-
he likes xenosaga, and bad games like xenosaga. no or about it
