why am i playing -- and somewhat enjoying -- the psu standalone expansion, the inanely-subtitled "ambition of the illuminus," especially when there are vastly better gaming options available right now? as tvc will attest, the back of the box shows such grossly unentertaining things like invoking yoga animations in the lobby, invoking sentai poses in the lobby, invoking wacky animu expressions in the lobby, and performing countless other stupid lobby things only an ot level vii japafag like kiryogi could appreciate.
admittedly, they went for nostalgia with this expansion -- now you create a wholly original character from the start, and the battle system is more of a three-press system like the old pso games than the mashtastic combos of psu. the classes are more defined, and there's a lot more weapons and loot, and the need for crafting is marginally reduced. oh, and it runs great on my laptop. zones and missions are more accessible without running all over creation.
the bad? EVERYTHING ABOUT THE STORY. LOLIS EVERYWHERE. stupid animu cliches abound, breeding like meta-rabbits. camera controls are still a shoulder button clusterfuck (on the pc -- they don't map to the right stick as a default. dunno about ps2/360). story missions still require using the dumb goggles, and navigating the interface/palette is a nightmare. WTF.
i almost have no excuse. seriously: sega. they let their fans design games for them these days, so its no wonder the game is all kinda fucked up on the interface front.
still, i feel compelled to play. pso music, references, and items abound. SHAME.

the more i think about it, the more i get the feeling that this is tied to my dothack thing -- that i like meandering through featureless dungeons, rhythmically
pounding my pud pounding out simple combos and collecting the loot. it is easy to watch boston legal in the background, since no skill or concentration is required at all, and the loot/upgrades come fast and furious.
-
do the menus make beeping noises when you navigate them?
pso annoyed the shit out of me
-
no

Let us blame Eastern Europe!
-
If you like bland repetitive dungeons you should try Hellgate!
-
i do! i do!
but i do not like random crashes and ivan sulic's prose, sir. sell me your wii!
-
i plan on picking this up soon, once get through the majority of my winter games. really surprised to read this after drinky poo-pooed my "let's play PSU" thread.
i'd rather be stabbed in the eye with demi's dick than play either
:-\

psu the original is awful, but i could still see inklings of something good glimmering beneath the detritus. illuminus is still detritus, but there's less glimmering and more occasional glowing. also i am SINGLE PLAYER ONLY.
-
it's still PSU!
-
i am going to find out WHO voted the himumu option and make sure i trash all your favorite games for a month
-
that would be me
-
fucking undertow is fucking crap, you effete basement dweller
-
at least i'm not himumumu
-
*Advent Rising*
-
god dammit

Does the really take it back to its roots? I hated PSU, especially once I learned I had to keep making and selling my items in order to get any money:(
-
I'm picking this up once it drops in price. I learned my lesson getting PSU on release, only to see it take a nose dive to $20 almost instantly.
-
I chose the himumumumu option, but I'm pretty easy to make fun of.
-
So it's more like the old PSO, huh? Makes me interested; and you say you don't need the original to play it? Can I download the 360 version from the marketplace and play it, or would I have to have purchased the original shitty PSU?
-
360 version requires old and shitty psu. :'(
pc and ps2 do not require the originals. get the pc version and use a 360 controller.

Maybe, if it's on Steam. I don't feel like paying more to import this game, and that's the only option, I think. I don't know if the PC version was released here and if it has English.
-
also, the pc version is very hostile to alt-tabbing :-\
-
I completely forgot about the $9.99 monthly fee. Never mind.
BASARA TWOoooooooooooooo this week anyway. Fuck everything else.
-
Easter Europe wins!
-
I have the PC version that I'd be willing to ship to you for free, Lyte. I bought it at big lots so it was next to nothing.
-
I say you're a japathing. :-*

This is pretty cool so far.
