Title: Games with awesome handguns (and use them often, too)
Post by: Ruzbeh on November 26, 2007, 11:58:46 PM
This thread should mainly be about PC games.

One of the reasons I like MAFIA (PC) so much, is because the handguns in this game are fantastic. They sound great, and every bullet packs on hell of a punch. Tommy guns in this game have crazy recoil so you really learn to love the handguns. Colt 1911 and Magnum guns = YES.

Half-Life 2 has the fantastic .357 Magnum, but it's not used very often at all. Not enough bullets. A huge shame!

Max Payne also has some cool handguns, but nowhere near as awesome as in MAFIA. If you haven't ever played MAFIA, play it all costs (avoid console versions).

Post more games with awesome handguns!!

On the console gaming side of things, the Magnums in Resident Evil games always felt very satisfying.

RE's magnum is awesome.  The one in Gears is probably a tribute to RE.

I actually like the way the handguns feel in Uncharted.  There's nothing spectacularly original about any of 'em but you have more control with them than you have with just about every other weapon in the game.  Just feels right, imo.

yeah but every gun in R6 is sexier.  all the little finger and hand movements and if you leave one bullet in the chamber, the reload time is shorter and omg the sound of unleashing an AK on a mofo from 50 yards away straight into his face :jizz

I'd definitely say R6 and RE4.  RE4 really made you have to be careful about conserving your ammo but it let you upgrade your weapons so it wasn't a huge problem.  except on pro difficulty where the regenerators were just impossible without a rifle (which has very limited ammo) and infrared scope.  I also liked the weird weapons (crossbow, matilda, etc.)

Although the game was pure crap (first person platforming  :yuck) I thought Call of Juarez had some nice variety of handguns. I did enjoy some of the double analog handgun action as well.

I second that.

I love using Ebony & Ivory in DMC games.  Gunslinger, while probably the worst style in DMC3, was a blast (lulz) to play through the game with.

Also, guns were one of the few things that BLACK did correctly.

Handguns aren't really conducive to action game pacing.  They don't have the fire-rate of machine gun bursts and they lack the bombast of a good shotgun blast.  Of the action games that do use handguns prominently, they're usually weld dually, John Woo style, or have some other stylistic alteration to make them more interesting.
