Title: Half-Life 2 Episode One...
Post by: Ruzbeh on November 27, 2007, 04:18:26 PM
... is really crappy.

First of all, you get to travel with Alyx all the time, which is lame. Voice-acting in EP1 is also a lot more unconvincing and much more videogame-ish. I remember when we were fighting zombies in some kind of tunnel with a flashlight (which is actually cool), but then Alyx did some zombie sounds to scare me and said "haha, gotcha!" or something similar. Now, that was very funny and I guess sorta cool, but that doesn't really fit in with the whole horror and sense of dread thing, IMO. Also, at the end of the episode, you had to escort a lot of people to the trains which is incredibly repetitive. Everytime I thought "ok I think thats enough" but then Alyx keeps telling me to get more people. I had to go back and forth like six or seven times while the Combine kept 'respawning'!

I just started Episode Two and it's not starting out very well. At all.

What also sucks is that there are no resting spots in EP1. In Half-Life 2 you had those here and there, especially in Water Hazard. That was awesome and cool. But in EP1 it's all about rushing out of City 17. No resting. No calm spots. Enemies are everywhere. There is no variation in the sense of dread and danger.

Oddly enough, most of us think that IS A POSITIVE.

Both ep1 and 2 are like Half Life 2 cut down to just awesome parts.  That's a good think.

I actually posted a thread a couple weeks ago on Episode 1, overall I didn't care much for the game, like you said I got fed up with the constant way I was getting chased, and a lot of elements seemed excessively trial-and-error, or even luck-driven... there were a lot of parts I felt to be really frustrating, too.

The way Alyx interacted with you was a high point, though, and she didn't become nearly the burden I expected her to be when I first saw that she was to take an increased role in the game (by making "witty" comments nonstop or being a moron who constantly ran into the line of fire, dying, like the usual character you have to escort in games).

Everyone says that Episode 2 is a lot better, too bad I have to wait till Xmas to get Orange Box (PC, of course).

Episode 2 is so much better than Episode 1. The problem with Episode 1 is that all of the big changes are under the hood: AI for Alyx, general graphical upgrades, some new methods of encounter. Episode 2 takes all that engine work and makes it sing. I'd go as far as to say that Episode 2 is better than 0. Both 1 and 2 try to do the same thing: Compress the awesomeness and variety of 0 into a smaller space. 2 does that very well, 1 does not.

Every time someone says that HL2 was better than Episode 1, I start thinking of Highway 17, and wondering what the fuck the person is smoking.  HL2 had some legitimately AWFUL parts.

And the elevator part wasn't bad.  Did you people play it right after Ep1 released on PC, BEFORE they patched it?  That was complaint-worthy.
