...it's just like all the other GTA boxarts. What's there to be excited about? ???
-
eh, they're not that creative with their box arts. total poop announcement. real news on december 6th.

DECEMBER 6TH
-
After Assassin's Creed, it's difficult to get excited for another GTA where there will probably only be like 4 people on the screen at once. Ho hum.
-
Level as many complaints at GTA as you want, I certainly do, but not enough people onscreen certainly isnt one I would be making. Theyve all done pretty great in that regard.
-
If they don't up it in the light of AC, they fail. The bar has been raised. There were about 20-30k people living in Jerusalem during the time of AC. There are millions living in the modern day NYC analogue of GTA4. If they don't update their shit to reflect the bar being raised, they have officially dropped the ball.
-
Again though, where do you get this assumption from? For all their many flaws, III, VC, and SA all had shittons of people.
-

Not compared to AC!
-
there were maybe a dozen NPC's on screen in SA. and that was on the PC version with max draw distance. in the next one, they should be able to get a hundred on screen. with actual AI too. the original was held back by what the PS2 could do and for the time it was impressive, but R* has to do something amazing to get this next one to sell. I don't see anybody getting hyped for GTA when a bunch of ORIGINAL(er) sandbox games have come out in the last few years.
-
But they were totally last gen. This is not a fair comparison.

Well, I'm not going to make any judgements yet. Let's see what the upcoming trailer shows. GTA with better graphics isn't going to cut it this time. Between Saint's Row, Crackdown, and AC, the sandbox bar has been raised in just about ever category. Does R* have what it takes to win the crown?
-
who gives a shit about being fair?
and nintenho, I see people getting hyped for tyhis game just becuase its GTA, most casual gamers probably havent heard of the other games were talking about that do things better, and at the end the day they actually wont give a shit if another game plays better. They want to play GTA becuase its the megabrand they were weaned on, and they think its fun to input a weapon cheat and walk around killing people aimlessly, and you can steal cars zomg so much fun

Well, at least those 4 people on screen will say more than 10 random sayings!

A bunch? What are they? Crackdown? Crackdown's story sucks, the only fun thing about that game is jumping around. Assassin's Creed? It's fun, but it's nothing on GTA especially gameplay variety.

Those are all good games but I still enjoy GTAIII, VC, and SA more. Also, out of those games, I honestly think AC is the only one that has truly raised any bar.

Well, you are flatly wrong. Both Saint's Row and Crackdown show that SHOCKA it is possible to have competent aiming in these games. Crackdown has development of your character's abilities. Saint's Row has a lot of customization to it. Assassin's Creed makes you feel like you are in a city. These are examples of things that are done far superior compared to GTA's meager ambitions.

Crackdown's aiming wasn't vastly improved over GTA's. Saint's Row was, and I really hope that R* implements Saints Row like controls into IV. GTASA had development of character abilities. You could swim faster, run faster, punch harder, and even wield dual guns in SA; if you're expecting them to somehow let your jump across the whole city like in Crackdown, that's silly. Saints Row has lots of customization, true, but so did GTASA. Assassin's Creed makes you feel like you are in a city, but so have previous GTA's; I'm pretty sure GTAIV will evolve that a bit more, and a lot of the previews and trailers have hinted that they will.
-
Crackdown has basically the same aiming system as Saint's Row, doesn't it?
And the swim faster, run faster, punch harder stuff doesn't mean much to me if I can't see it on a character info screen. I realize the improvements do occur, but there's little sense of satisfaction gained if I do not see a number telling me so.
And Saint's Row and GTASA are in different galaxies when it comes to customization. SR has so many more options, in addition to the ability to have granular control over your character (and vehicle's appearance). GTA also needs the ability to keep mass amounts of cars a la SR.
As for people on screen, if GTA4 isn't at least comparable to AC, it stands a solid chance of failing. A 12th century city should not feel more alive than a 21st century one.
-
Crackdown's aiming is similar, but it's not nearly as good. For example, you can't do drive bys at all in Crackdown, the manual aiming can be extremely wonky at times too.
You can see those things in your character screen. In GTASA all you have to do is press L1 and the stats pop up. The more muscle you have, the stronger you are; the more the stamina you have the further you can run and swim;etc. It was not a number, but it was a bar.
Maybe I have not played enough of Saints Row (I've been busy with other games). I'll play more of it after I'm done with my current onslaught of games. I really really like the game though. I like sandbox games a lot, and it's one of the better ones that isn't GTA.
You're right that GTA isn't comparable to AC....yet. We don't know if it will or not. Remember that how many people appear on screen depends on the time of day. Also consider this, in GTA you have vehicles. It would be extremely annoying trying to drive through herds of pedestrian cattle when you don't want to be noticed by cops. I think if GTA doesn't have any many people as AC, it will be a gameplay decision, not a technical decision.
I guess I just sound like I'm some crazy fanboy at this point, but I don't care. I have had much more fun with the GTA games from last gen than any of the current gen sandbox games combined. I don't know if it's nostalgia or what, but I've played through the last gen GTA's MULTIPLE times, more times than I can count and I still don't get bored. I'm not so sure if I can do that with current gen sandbox games.

I like how you think just because someone loves gta they have to be a casual gamer
well its either that or they have poor taste/ low standards, which is typical of most casual gamers

Or maybe because it's just plain fun? There is more to GTA than mindless killing you know. I rarely kill people mindlessly.
-
Give it up, Himumu; the Queen is dead.
-
GTA sucks
-
It is not dead! Not yet!
-
Cannot wait. The initial experience when dropping into every GTA for the first time is always unique. Taking in the music and the landscape. I love it
-
Good thing blue's still got my back.
-
The first 5-10 hours of every GTA is pretty good, the problem is the main part of the game is usually like 3 times longer than that.
And I know people who while not hardcore gamers are not quite casual gamers either who pretty much only see GTA as a destruction play ground and not an actual game.
-
I never understood that complaint about GTA. I played over 100 hours of GTASA, I've played GTA3 6 times, and then some. There's always so much to do that I never really ever get bored. I have never yawned while playing a GTA game.
I guess it's just totally love it or have it or some shit.

That's me. GTA games have terrible mission structures. The missions themselves vary in quality, some of them being great, but the way they are structured in game is smelly. It's not fun having to go all the way across the map to restart a mission you flubbed because chance wasn't on your side. It's not fun to have to redo that a bunch of times, as you have to do once you get passed the beginning of the game and into the more challenging bits. It's not that fun to only have one mission at a time, either.
The revamped mission structure should:
1) More easily allow you to restart missions. Not by going to the trigger of the mission or anything, either. It has to be easier than that.
2) Allow the player to take more than one mission at once. To facilitate this, the games need more missions, period. One place I'd look for inspiration here is the Godfather game, or even Saint's Row, both of which had non-plot oriented side missions by the boatload.
3) Offer a new UI. GTA3 to SA have all used flavors of the same menu system that was never good in the first place.

He's buying the PS3 version, it's over

There's always one mission a decent way in that is so fucking broken I lose interest in playing the game. The more side shit they've added in each GTA the more stupid half assed levels they've added.
Things that suck in GTA:
Anything related to flying
Any check point race
Maybe its from playing the game on the PC but I never put in more than about 20-30 total hours on GTA before I'm bored of the landscaped and annoyed with the mission design.

Exactly. I fucking hate how later in the game you get to the multi part missions and there's one shitty part that if you fuck up you have to do like 20 minutes of driving just to restart the mission and do the boring build up to the part you screwed up. The GTA games are so buggy and random that inevitably you'll fuck up 30 times before getting all the random variables to align.
-
Well, as a start, it needs AC godly animations.
actually, all games need that.
-
Well, as a start, it needs AC godly animations.
actually, all games need that.
I agree with this
Also, GTA needs a major revamp from GTA:SA. I agree with the "This better not be last gen GTA with next gen graphics". The gameplay needs to progress too.
-
I doubt it'll be much like SA.
-
I loved the first two GTAs of last generation (and I enjoyed GTA2 as well at the time), but I finally got around to buying SA for the PC this year and BLEH. It was fun for a little while, even though it was archaic as hell, but I got bored fairly quickly. Same goddamn shit with awful mechanics, even on the PC.
-
Much like horror games in the generation before, the PS2 generation was BARELY capable of doing sandbox design justice. When the PS2 hit, horror games really started to hit their stride (although fewer people were trying to make them), and I think sandbox is the same thing with this generation. GTA was archaic right from the get go, and it was a huge success not because it did things especially well, but because it was the first of its kind.
I am sure 4 will sell a million copies, but it's a big question mark as far as expectations go. GTA has always basically been the only thing Rockstar did correctly that managed to be a hit. Other good games like Bully and The Warriors didn't fare so well. I really don't know what to expect. Take 2 and Rockstar are in the shitter these days,s o it's probably best to keep those expectations low.
-
I bought Bully when it was on sale for 19.99 like a month after it came out.
And never opened it.
-
That's a tragedy. It's a pretty good game. Better than any other R* game aside from maybe The Warriors.
-
It's not better than The Warriors, and it's not better than GTA either, or the Max Payne games.
-
I still mean to play it eventually. I'd say the fact that I never started DMC3 is more of the tragedy. I still want to beat DMC1 first.
Whatever happened to the rumored 360 version of Bully? I'd buy and play that.
ACHIEVEMENTS
-
it's not rumored
Speaking of R*, I still haven't gotten Table Tennis. I wonder how cheap that is these days. I'll get after Xmas
-
Why did I hear so much shit about that then? Fucking GAF. :maf
-
I thought it wasn't a rumor?
Anyways gotta support R*, one of my favorite western devs. I'll pick up the 360 version of Bully myself if it's true, if only to support em. Hopefully they fix my issues with the original game.
-

Max Payne doesn't count as R*! That's Remedy.

-
They also made Table Tennis.
-
Oh really? I thought that was Rockstar testing out the Euphoria engine or whatever.
Table Tennis is good right?
-
Dunno about it really.
and their next gen engine is called "Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE)":

-
Ah right. I forgot about that. Rage Engine is the GRAPHICS engine, but Euphoria is their physics engine.

how reliable is gamefaqs tho, really

it's coming to wii and 360

gta's story is absolutely terrible and makes it incredibly hard to finish the missions. and the missions are boring as fuck. I can never get past like 15 hours in a GTA. as soon as i unlock all the places to go to, i stop caring about the story at all.
also, GTA's have never been immersive. sorry. and yes, blah blah blah, limitations of next gen. i understand.
but we've all seen what can happen to otherwise good developers if they can't keep up the pace with next gen. so we'll see. and there was never more than like a dozen people on screen at once in GTA and far less when you started shooting and blowing shit up.
-
Man, why did they take the table tennis demo off of xbl ???
How can you say GTA games aren't immersive, Ed? I remember when GTAIII came out and you were like this is the best game ever. What happened
-
Wow, the character models are insanely detailed.
-
?

They look like real people in the new trailer. Lighting looks ridiculously real too.

Whenever you would start a crime rampage, all the cars around would disappear after a few minutes, bringing things to a quick end. I HATED that. Same thing with civilians.

That'll be cool if you can try to wipe out the world. They should make that the anti-christ achievement. It should be insanely hard though, like at least several times harder than the zombie killing achivements in Dead Rising.

Well, I mean, do you really expect civilians to drive and walk around where a maniac is killing everything in sight?
-
the Saint achievement (saving 50 or more survivors) was harder IMO, mainly due to the pathetic human AI in DR.

Nope, but I never really cared. When I assault mother fuckers I'm on the move, you'll get more kills that way instead of staying in one spot. Staying in one spot is boring.

You're such a cigarillo, Himu.

suck my nut

I bet if I started sucking one, the rest of your cock would disappear because you can only render so much at a time.

I stopped after one of them was running towards the psycho yellow guys and died.
set a way point, called her to no end but she never followed any of my actions, and that was close to to warehouse/elevator area.
shame.

is that the way it should be? give a preview you of the action?

I might be a little late but the things other games did better were:
crackdown: great platforming and far better aiming (and I only played through the PC version of GTA: SA). even the vehicle controls were better. don't forget it had great co-op.
Saints Row: similar type of game to GTA but SHOCK, you could shoot well! Did most of what GTA did but more polished. and with decent mulitplayer.
Assassin's Creed: ridiculously bitch slaps GTA in amount of people on screen, AI(!), interactivity with the environment, and apparently also the movement controls!
the only thing GTA has actually going for it are the size of the cities (being realistic/spread out) and capturing the atmosphere of what ever theme they're going for. the gameplay sucks though. in the PC version, it's sort of tolerable as a game you can pick at whenever you want because the controls for cars and shooting is vastly improved. It's a shit ass game to play on consoles though. don't kid yourself. I do, however, like the humor and the stories. it's maybe sitcom quality and I usually don't mind sitting throught the movies.
-
lol @ saying Assassin's Creed ai is better than GTA ai. FOLLOW ME TO THE ROOF OF A BUILDING. I PUSH YOU. FOLLOW ME TO THE ROOF. I PUSH YOU OFF AGAIN.
lol @ Crackdown having better vehicle controls. The only thing Crackdown has over GTA's vehicle controls is the fact you use triggers to accel/brake.
-
the gameplay sucks though.
lol
tell me this when you praise Saints Row when its gameplay is nothign but a gta gameplay rip off. I'll admit that the aiming in GTA is wonky, but the mission design in III and VC is nothing short of superb. You could do most if not all missions in VC in a completely different way than your friend, who would most likely have a completely different experience. I remember bombing the final boss's limo cars, jumping into my mansion's garage to take one of my cars out, drove the car through the front door of my mansion, killing the final boss. I bet Saints Row or Crackdown doesn't let you even be a bit creative like that. Crackdown is boring. I'm just going around fighting enemies that look and fight the same who seem to pose no real threat, and you say it has better gameplay than GTA just because of its aiming is better.
-
wow himuro meltdown total.
the AI in GTA is pathetic. they take no cover (except for VERY FEW scripted parts after like a cutscene) and they just stand there and shoot at you. it wasn't uncommon for the AI to trap itself in car chases (shoot out one wheel in the polaski chase in SA and see what happens). the game really DOES NOT do what it aims to do and that gives you an half-assed experience. fun game, but not AAA in any way. I'm not being tough on it, it just does not have much polish.
the problem with GTA is that it uses it's sandbox design for gimmicky things. I still like it (on the PC version with controls I can tolerate). after SR which ripped off everything from GTA and improved it, AC with AI that is at the least technically impressive, and crackdown which got the one man army gameplay and navigating a sandbox world design thing down right, GTA has a lot of competition and I don't give a shit about it until I see something amazing that it's doing. The past ones didn't actually make USE of their sandbox design and if the next one doesn't, I wont' give a big shit about it and I'll play it in 2 years on PC when I'm really bored.
seriously, find somebody who was immersed into GTA by it's fucking gameplay. yeah...not even you.
-
The AI in GTA is definitely worse than AC, although none of these games have good AI, really. They wouldn't be so fun if they did.
GTA is more of a simple set of triggers than AI, though. Especially when it comes to cops/breaking the law. They need to fix their implementation of breaking the law and the police noticing and what and how the police react to things.
-
It will be interesting to see who is better in term of graphics, AC (Scimitar engine) or GTAIV (RAGE engine).
I'm betting on AC.

It's too bad both engines are held back by the PS3's inferior hardware. We might never see what the 360 can do because of the PS3.
-
That's why they deserve shitty ports.
-
I hope they've fixed all the technical problems found in the old trailers. GTA IV :bow
-
seriously, find somebody who was immersed into GTA by it's fucking gameplay. yeah...not even you.
tons of people were.
-
I hope Rise FM comes back (GTA4 is almost guaranteed to have better radio stations than the real NYC), there's more than a few people/cars on screen at one time, the missions don't force you down a rigid trial-and-error path to proceed, restarting missions doesn't require me to drive across half a city, and I hope that our Russkie friend doesn't control like he's constipated. I am glad Rockstar at least removed the shitty 'character building' stuff from SA, like eating to get fat and shit, that was dumb.
-
restarting missions doesn't require me to drive across half a city
vice city had the taxi, which automatically drove you to the mission you failed if you died or got busted. They took that feature out in SA for some reason, but in that game you had skiptrack, which would let you skip ahead to later portions of missions if they were long. I agree though, but I regress: Vice City Stories brought the feature back so I'm expecting this game to have them since it's been announced you can use taxis to drive you to your destinations at any time now.
-

If you are comparing the combat aspects of the AI, I think that is a bit unfair comparision. I mean we are talking about guns and cars vs. swords and climbing stuff. When you come down to the aspects of the combat, AC basically just took what The Warriors did and amped it up. It's much easier to have AI surround someone in a swordfight than to take cover and move to strategic postions in a gun fight.
I wholeheartedly agree about the cop situation. Other than the ridiculous blend in the open and nobody notices, the line of sight and how you can lose your chasers is quite good in AC. I hope GTA uses this aspect more so than the pull into a spray paint shop in front of 5 cop cars and *poof* they don't know it's you.

Himuro, I was into the game originally because it was violent and well... i had worse taste in games back then. Just how I feel.
I never did the missions. I just ran around causing mayhem.
And there's a huge difference in people running away from you because you're killing everybody. But at about 4 stars, when you're killing shit, everything starts to disappear and even when you run around you can't find anybody. I've ran like a mile in the game and found 2 people.
didn't last gen GTA's run on renderware? I hope these problems are corrected now that they've created their own engine.

ruzbeh, your assburgers is shining right now.

It will be interesting to see who is better in term of graphics, AC (Scimitar engine) or GTAIV (RAGE engine).
I'm betting on AC.

Dude, that looks hideous.
GTA always had the best graphics. Especially GTA3 for its time (on the PC).
GTA4 will have better graphics. Count on it.

no surprised that two of the most prominent black members of this community are so excited about such a violent game.

Don't kid yourself. I'm a GTA apologist but no, just no.

Pay and spray does not exist in GTA4. You have a line of sight, and you only become wanted if a cop sees you. The Warriors' system is in use in GTA4; essentially you will have to be in the cops vicinity to be seen, and also, it seems people rat you out if you ARE seen so you must be discreet. Also similarly to the warriors, if you hide, the heat will die down. In GTA4, if the cops do not see you, you can switch from one car to another car to trick the cops.
At least this is what they say happens in the game's previews.
You could say that The Warriors and Bully are both experiments so they can test out new things to implement in GTA4, similarly to how Valve kinda is using Portal to experiment with what to put in Ep 3 I guess?

Don't kid yourself.
What? It's true.
It's not like you know anything about graphics. You don't exactly have the videogame experience to prove that you know how to appreciate good graphics.
listen, just because it takes so much effort to break your concentration doesn't mean you know anything either. keep spinning bottles, junior.

I am glad Rockstar at least removed the shitty 'character building' stuff from SA, like eating to get fat and shit, that was dumb.
that was especially horrible because some of the girlfriends only liked really fat or really muscley guys.
the only things guaranteed to be good in GTA4 are the soundtrack and the humor. I'll have to see gameplay videos of an entire mission before I believe it's good. the old game's missions just were total shit. they feel like they made every misssion in like 5 minutes and at the end, they came up with the controls for the game. I certainly think they'll improve that but the fact of the matter is that at the moment, GTA is not the best "sandbox" game.

I got all the girlfriends in the game with max muscle. Troll harder.

What is he talking about? I don't have the videogame experience to appreciate good graphics? is that some kind of insult or something? I have been playing games since I was like 4 years old. What is he talking about? ??? I mean fuck, look at my impressions of past GTAIV pics. I LOVE the graphics. But do not say that GTAIV has better graphics, that's just distinguished mentally-challenged.

I meant the girlfriends prefer you to look different ways. that's really the only reason in the game to change how you look. I mean, it's hard as hell to go around corners on a motorcycle when you're completely fat so then you have to work off the weight. that is what I call a stupid gameplay decision.
a lot of the missions had extremely simple AI that plays the EXACT same every time. a few missions might have AI that can do something different but it's not much variety. is there any mission in gta:sa that you can honestly say felt like it had a lot of ways you could tackle it?

I had max muscle, and managed to do things my way. All you have to do is wear clothes that up your sex appeal (tank top is just fine if you've got muscles really) and take them gifts. It's not even hard to work off the weight, and it's extremely hard to get extremely fat anyways. Micromanagement in SA regarding fat and muscle was so fucking easy. All you had to do was go eat 2-3 taco meals at Cluckin Bell so you had enough fat so you won't lose muscle. I got max muscle at like, the beginning of the fucking game and I played 100 hours of GTASA. In those 100 hours, I had to go stop and get some food maybe 10 times. You have to REALLY suck to get that fat, or at the very least, do it on purpose.
And no, GTASA did not have missions which I could tackle in multiple ways, which was one of my biggest issues with the game. According to the previews so far for GTAIV, they have rectified this problem. The missions weren't that great in SA, aside from a few missions, but the world was so awesome I looked past that. GTAIII and VC definitely have the better missions, there is no dispute there. But the missions don't SUCK either. Burning a field of weed = win.

Just because Assassin's Creed might be technically superior, it doesn't mean it has better graphics. Assassin's Creed has terrible colors.
I love the colors. Have you even PLAYED the game?

Real world in the past wasn't really all flashy and colorful.
also, the screens i posted are all off screen camera shots.

buying specific clothes and having to change into them is just as annoying imo. to get fat, I would eat 6 pizzas next to a save point 4 times (more than 6 a day makes you throw up). getting fat wasn't a problem because if you got hungry (which only happens if you don't save for like 30 minutes) then you can get a salad meal and you'll be fine. the only statistic that mattered was stamina but that never goes down.. I never beat anybody because I carried a knife everywhere.
the most important thing for the next one is actual AI and variety in the missions. I appreciated SA for the same reasons you did and didn't like any of the missions that much (weed burning was pretty cool though). I'm not going to get the next one though if they don't radically change the shooting and if they don't improve the driving (gassing and braking with triggers please).

Hometown, downtown, speeding all around
An AK47 got the power in its barrel to
Move any mother that gets in my way
Just another power machine out on the freeway
Riding with me is my MC homeboy
Knowing the rules ain't part of his program
Finding the right way around this map
Might be pretty hard cause he's fucked on crack
G - Grand Theft Auto
You gotta make a mark and move where you want to

Determination
To steal what you can and run from the nation
A - Hey what d'ya say
We automate the sequence and speed for my getaway
Take it to the edge, there's nowhere to hide
And call up the boys, let's go for a joyride
Let's go for a joyride
"Stop the violence from the police" you know my Dad used to say but now he's deceased
He got caught in a jam, threw in the can
When the cops from Brooklyn said he killed another man
Seek knowledge was my main game
To think about the law, to figure out the frame
Just when I thought I knew justice, a cop behind me said
"You just been busted"
