Title: Someone explain to me the media's fascination with the Knicks?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 01, 2007, 01:50:13 PM
The Knicks have been irrelevant for years.  Can we even remember a conversation in the past two decades where they've come up in NBA discussion whatsoever?  So for a franchise that has been wallowing in mediocrity for years, to get so much coverage on ESPN, seems ridiculous.  Yes, I know it's New York.  But - hey! - when the Jets tank, ESPN doesn't spend all year chronicling their failures.  There are better teams in the NBA getting less national coverage than the nicks.  Lot better teams.

The Knicks don't even boast a marquee player worthy of any attention.  When your "star" is Stephon Marbury and you get more press than a bad 76ers team that had Allen Iverson or a mediocre Timberwolves team that once boasted Kevin Garnett, this just seems stupid to me.

Maybe there is some credibility that ESPN just focuses on the Boston and New York markets.  The rest are afterthoughts.

I ask this same question all the time, except substituting basketball with hockey, the Knicks with the Leafs, and the US with Canada.

In the past 2 decades? Oh you mean, NBA championships in 1994 where the Knicks played the Rockets and got their ass beat? Back then, no one thought the Rockets would win but they did. Talkin' about: THIS IS NEW YORK. NEW YORK IS GONNA WIN.

I really should refine my time frame to like, the past fifteen years or so.  They were a good East team in the early 90s, back when Ewing was in his prime, but they never managed to win anything meaningful whatsoever and quickly sank into irrelevancy.

Comparing the Knicks to the Jets is laughable. The Knicks are a pretty huge, important NBA franchise which has been pretty sucky for years. Along with Boston and LA it's one of the most storied franchises as well. But Boston and LA don't have the huge media that NY has.

Boston's revival is going to be very important to the NBA in the long run, and it really puts more pressure on NY to get their act together; there are whispers that Stern might personally intervene. Can you imagine how huge it would be for NY to aquire a LeBron or Kobe? We'd never hear the end of that.

How are they a "huge, important" NBA franchise?  Because they're based in New York?  Just because they're in New York, doesn't mean we need to sit through endless coverage of their mediocrity.  And to say that Los Angeles doesn't have the media that New York has is just speaking out of your not-black ass again.  The only difference between the Lakers and the Knicks is that the Knicks are a cultural institution for New Yorkers and the Lakers have actually won meaningful games in the past ten years.

The Knicks are a big, important NBA franchise, they just haven't really done shit worthy praising in like forever. But that doesn't discount their former influence.

I fail to see what makes them big and important outside of their market placement.  They might have been big and important at one point and time, but merely being situated in New York doesn't make them big and important.  Especially when they haven't done anything in years.

There's your answer. Toronto is by far the biggest local media market in Canada. New York is by far the biggest local media market in the US.

Why is this not the same with the Jets?
The NFL is different in that it's more of a national sport. The media coverage thus tends to be less myopic. So a small market team like Green Bay can get a lot of coverage.

I was also annoyed by the media's obscession with the Knicks for many years but now I just ignored all the Knicks stories.  The media's excuse for the excessive Knick coverage has always been that it's good for the NBA to have a good team in New York.  I don't buy that at all because the NBA was incredibly successful in the 80s and 90s without having a dominant Knicks team.  Even when the Ewing-led team was one of the top contenders, it didn't do much for the league's popularity.  If anything, the ugly series between the Knicks and the Rockets started the decline of the NBA.  The only reason why ratings didn't plummet after that terrible series was that Jordan decided to make a comeback.

The ironic thing about the media's desire of having a relevant NY team is that they're the main reasons why the Knicks are perpetually mired in mediocrity.  Because it's unacceptable for the Knicks to miss the playoffs, Knicks management sacrifice long term plans just to be a low seed every year which means there's an endless cycle of many bad contracts and few good draft picks.

Jets are a bad comparison.  They're the secondary NY team in the sport, along with the Mets and Islanders.

The Yankees and Giants definitely get coverage disproportionate to their success.

More generally, teams from large markets with long histories tend to have big fanbases even outside their home towns.  It's why you can find Red Sox, Yankees, and Cubs fans showing up at road games.

Yea, since I live in New York this stuff doesn't really bother me.

On the other hand, the Knicks being absolutely worthless does.

And the Jets sucking.

And the Mets collapsing.

Fuck.

The Jets aren't secondary - Manhattan roots for the Jets.  Everyone else roots for the Giants.

Jets are completely secondary.  Paul Zimmerman says so, and not only is he older than Methuselah, but he was a Jets beat-writer back in the day.

INSIDE THE CITY.

Um, because they are one of the biggest and most important franchises in NBA history, despite the current situation. Same with Boston although of course, "they're back" (don't believe the hype!). What else is the media empire that is New York city going to talk about, outside of the meh Giants - now that the Yankees stories are kind of slowing down? And that may be an understatement because the Yankees are still getting a lot of off season press due to the A-God talk. Bottom line, NY covers the shit out of everything, no matter how shitty it is

NY media is a beast of its own. LA hasn't had much to talk about lately, unless we count the various Kobe soap operas (Kobe kicking Shaq to the curb, Kobe raping white women, Kobe bitching because he can't win games with "his" team, Kobe being Kobe, etc). I'd rather hear about the alleged dirt Starbury has on Zeke  :ninja

There's such an insane love/hate thing with Eli. The NY media is like a double headed Bill Walton dragon: hyperbolic to the max, changing opinions based on immediate goals.

"Oh Eli passed for 2 touchdowns, he's looking amazing - Peyton look out"

"wtf Eli, 2 INTs. worse QB I've ever seen. If his name was Eli Baxter he'd be on the bench!"

Eli would be on the bench by now if he had a different last name.  He's a decent backup quarterback - a Brad Johnson type QB.  Not bad, not good and definitely not a franchise quarterback.  Sooner the Giants realize this, the better off everyone will be.
