Title: Eschalon Book 1 is rad
Post by: BlueTsunami on December 01, 2007, 07:02:27 PM
Its like Ultima + Something Else (Don't really know what the something else is since the only oldschool PC game I've romped through is Ultima). I love the complete lack of hand holding when it comes to where and when you can go somewhere (lots o' dieing).

I made a complete Rogue character specializing in Traps, Locks, Hiding and Sneaking. Oh and even the vials in this game have an Ultima'esque look to it or maybe all video game vials look like that.

This is the new indie rpg, right?  Some people are saying its actually very good.  How is the combat?  Is the overworld sanbox or with self-contained areas?

Combat is Turn Based and theres rolling involved with each hit and dodge. The landscape is seamless but it works off a grid systems (like SRPGs), it works real well when you want to avoid traps and attack enemies (you can pull up the grid with TAB). Standard point and click fare.

I would say the overworld is Sandbox. You can literally go to lots of spots you shouldn't go to from the outset. Its very much like Ultima in that sense. You can also do some missions acquired from townspeople.

Lots of cool skills to fuck with too. Lots of the skill rely on probability directly effected by your skill level in the skill itself (you get 3 points for skills and traits each level).
