Title: Repetitve button inputs for mundane tasks
Post by: Smooth Groove on December 02, 2007, 09:39:35 PM
I hate how Uncharted keeps making me press the same button to pull up a gate.  That's probably the most distinguished mentally-challenged and useless feature of "new" game design.

Who started this crap?  God of War?  Resident Evil 4?

don't play zack and wiki. it makes you play waggle minigames to perform mundane tasks. it kind of ruins an otherwise clever game. thank fuck mario galaxy didn't go down this path

Not QTEs, fool, just pressing the same button repeatedly.  For stuff like opening a door or chest.

The Uncharted freaks sound so convinced of Uncharted's unprecedented greatness that I wonder if I'm biased sometimes.   I just can't see the incredible AI, animation, story, gameplay, visuals, controls, etc that surpass such elements in every other game.  Basically, like Dcharlie said, they think you're a troll if you don't think Uncharted is the greatest game ever.

God of War has you repeatedly hit R2 or L2 (forget which) to open up doors and it makes you hold the button to open chests.

I think it makes perfect sense in GoW. It's there to simulate straining to accomplish a difficult task, which is reinforced by the animation. It's never actually difficult to perform but it feels difficult.

How the hell would opening a chest be hard for a badass like Kratos?  If the button presses are there to simulate the strain of opening a chest, then we should be pressing the same button for 5 mins when Kratos is pulling down a 30 ft monster with his chained swords.

Welp, that's your answer

I bought a ps3 today along with Uncharted; I think I managed to last about 10 minutes before turning it off, FOREVER.

If the shit in Uncharted is bothering you then you better stay the hell away from Indigo Prophecy.  It's nothing BUT repetitive button pressing.

Look at the animation for it. He's obviously straining, and the designers want you to feel some of that too, I guess.  And it's not as if you have to tap it repeatedly, like with the gates etc...you just hold it.

I had to stop playing that because i literally could not do the tutorial bit where you had to alternately tap the left and right triggers real fast. Bearing in mind that I've been playing guitar for about 20 yrs, it blows my mind that i couldn't do this...and that other people seemingly could. Glad to hear someone else was bugged by it.

I hated in cod3 how it did it for things like rowing or melee fighting qte sequences.

it was really good in conan, god of war, and RE4.
