Title: OH MY GAWD IT'S NOT A MIRAGE! Rock Band is GOTY, kicks GH3's everloving butt.

I was Rock Band skeptic until today. I've played GH1-3 and despite my lack of skill, I've enjoyed them all. Then Rock Band appears on the scene, and everybody started talking about how it was basically going to be the best rhythm game of all time, but I wasn't convinced that just add a drum set and a mic to Guitar Hero was going to do all that. It seemed like there'd be a lot of clutter on the screen with four players, would the drums be more fun than a guitar, and who the hell wants to sing along?? Well, today I was at my friend's house playing Guitar Hero III co-op and a couple of other people were just hanging out, when his roommate shows up with Rock Band. So we ripped it out of the box and hooked it up to give it a whirl. Then everybody starts looking at the mic like it's snake, and starts going "Hmmm...well....so who's going to sing?" "Uh...not me." "Me neither." So I'm thinking, if I'm going to play Rock Band I might as well play the mic or the drums, otherwise I might as well be playing GH3, and since somebody already called dibs on the drums, I'd sing.

I hate singing. I'm not good at it, and having other people hear me (attempt to) sing is embarrassing. The only time I've sung in public is at Church, and even then I usually just mumble along because I don't want anyone to hear me. But if these chumps were too pussy to do it, what the hell I'll do it. So I grab the mic and we start rocking. Well it starts off with me just kind of quietly singing into the mic, not doing too great, but I'm getting 75-80%. My crappy attempt at singing didn't inspire anyone else to pick up the mic though, so since I was the only one ballsy enough to do it, I was quickly declared lead vocalist for life. I was like "Well alright bitches, because that's just what I wanted to do!" Everybody wanted a whirl on the drums though, but they all blew ass except for one guy who was then declared drummer for life. After a few songs though I starting gaining more confidence, and since everyone appeared comfortable with my singing, I started belting out the lyrics as loud as could. When we finally made it to Sabotage, I went for broke and just started screaming into the mic in what I imagined to be my best Beastie Boys impersonation. One of the guys behind patting me on the back going "Yeah! Yeah, you're the man! Woo!". I don't know if he was being sarcastic or for real, but I don't care because right then I just wanted to rip off my shirt and throw it into the crowd or go crowd surfer or do some other awesome rock star thing because right then I felt like a rock god. It was so awesome, it was like the first time I played Guitar Hero 1 but times 1000. Then we played "Run For the Hills" and I did a lot of screaming there too, and when the song was over I felt kind of woozy and light-headed and I saw little stars swirling around my eyes, so I was like "Okay, guys let's take five." which was fine with them because our drummer was getting tired, and our rotation of four guitarists had now shrunk to two. We had rocked for five solid hours, so it was probably a good time to stop.

Then we started messing with the store (we had ~$1000 each). Holy crap! I was used to GH3 with it's 10 characters and three costumes. Here there's this huge wardrobe, tattoos, hair styles, mustaches, make-up, etc. We spent another hour just fooling around in store. I bought the Road Warrior jacket, a full blond beard to accompany my flowing blond locks, a Snake Pliskin eye patch, although unfortunately I didn't have enough money to purchase the Road Warrior pants. The variety of clothes were just hilarious and awesome though.

The only bad thing about Rock Band was that it now made we feel like a fool for buying that turd of a game Guitar Hero III. That was a waste of money. WTF am I going to do with that game? I'm not going to play it again, that's for sure. How could I? It's impossible to go back to GH3 after playing Rock Band. I can't just forget what I saw tonight and go back to being blissfully ignorant and and happy with GH3. As one of my friends said when we were playing it, Rock Band makes GH3 look like a incomplete shell of a game. GH3 is like the demo version of Rock Band or something. I can't even bear to look at it anymore. I think I've decided that first time tomorrow it's going up on Ebay. It's the Wii version of the game, yeah yeah I know. A lot of my friends have Wiis and I wanted to play with them online, and I bought it before the whole "Wii Exclusive Mono Edition LOL!" news leaked out. But given the relative scarcity of GH3 Wii I should get close to market value if not slightly better. Hopefully some poor Rock Band-less schmo can still enjoy it in his ignorance. Rock Band is the best rhythm game ever, and the best 4-player non-online multiplayer experience since Super Smash Bros Melee. Maybe ever, I don't know. Playing Rock Band has put me in a semi-euphoric state, so that I can't even think rationally about it. All I know is that it kicked my ass, and I had to post about it even though I'm probably the last person in the world to find out how awesome it is. I don't care though, Rock Band gets an 11/10 from me.

Guitar Hero is about as much as my insecure self can take.

And about as much as my room can store.
