I've always meant to read the book (but I haven't). I was looking forward to the movie though, even after trailers which were kind of like "Look Who's Chronicles of Naria, Too!" Some early reviews have started seeping in, and they don't sound good. It's 52% at Rotten Tomatoes, and all positive reviews are like "Well, it looks really good!" and all the negative reviews are "Well, it looks really good....but it sucks!" It seems my hopes of a big December Epic are dashed yet again. :( Unless I Am Legend (lol) comes through some how. Hurry, Peter Jackson, deliver unto us The Hobbit and soon!

One of the primary complaints from the reviews seems to be that they rushed everything, and didn't give it room to flesh out.

I'm going to get the books during Christmas break and see what the hype/controversy is all about. I've heard it's the "Anti-Narnia" which sounds interesting; I wonder if it's just as preachy but with a different agenda. I like the Narnia series as a whole, but it was best when the metaphors were more subtle without slamming you in the face. There's a big difference between the quality of say Silver Chair and The Last Battle, which is the final and most preachy book in the series.
Peter Jackson rocks, but I don't like what I'm hearing about The Hobbit. If he does it, I don't want LOTR-lite; The Hobbit is an entirely different type of book. I don't want it split into two fucking films, and I don't want it in 3D. In fact, I'd prefer it not even be made. Even Jackson can't make a story with 12 dwarves, a wizard, and a middle aged hobbit interesting to audiences.

Stupid limited release will probably mean I'll get to see it around the end of January, or when the DVD comes out next spring. I still haven't seen No Country for Old Men yet. :(

Sure he can. King Kong sucked, it was like 8 hours too long and yet people saw it.

King Kong is cool if you watch it on DVD half an hour at a time like a TV miniseries.
