A few more minutes. :D I hope it's longer than one minute to compensate for being delayed. Break the tradition, R*!
-
looks like shit
-
The trailer will premier right as my ban is over. :bow
CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS TRAILER GUYS. I've been a fan of the series forever, and GTA2 is still my favorite. Once they started dumbing down the game to get more sales I kinda tuned out. But SA was fun
-
You always hated GTA games. wtf.
Of fucking snap. R* has broken tradition and decided to make the trailer longer than one minute. I guess it's a sort of apology for delaying the game.
-
Haters owned. Eat that crow and suck my dick.

No, I've been a fan since GTA1, which the mainstream pretends never existed.

Looks like shit. Shit I will buy on day 1.
-
Facial expressions and faces in general=shit
Animation=laughable
Oh well, there's always GTA2
-
eh, there's nothing wrong with the faces. the animation is still very gta-like, though, which is meh. the graphics in general look pretty good. i give this trailer a 6/10. it's kinda disappointing.
-
still meh. i'd rather see stuff like how many people are on screen and whatnot.
-
that song is awesome. :lol
-
:-\
-
saints row = gta4
saints row 2 > gta4
it's over
-
assassin's creed > gta4
embarassing
-
lol GTA.
AC has raised the bar way too high for this shit.
-
Music is awesome.
Graphics not so much.
Will probably still buy on day 1.
-
The graphics, physics and all the other effects are nice.
But the voice-acting and the entire style of the game is FUCKING GAY.
I wish GTA tried to be less GTA. It looked so promising with the first trailer. I thought it would be all in a serious tone, not without the humor, but a different style than the previous 3.
-
That trailer was really bad. You'd think you could at least a have a nice framerate or something...
-
Awesome song. Anyone know what it's called?
-
I think it looks alright and I'm definitely buying it day 1 BUT (and this is a big fucking BUT) they better have totally revamped the control scheme. I want to play a GTA game that feels as good as Saints Row.
-
it'll rock you guys suck ;etc

This game will be the reason why I'm gonna purchase a PS3 next year.

December 6, 2007 - The year is almost out, which means it's the season for giving (and receiving). Rockstar Games has decided to let us unwrap its present to the world a little early with the release of the third full trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV. To coincide with its release, we fired off a number of questions to the publisher/developer to get a little more insight on the trailer. Here's what we've learned:
IGN: Having just seen the trailer, is there any more insight you can provide on the story of GTA IV?
Rockstar Games: Obviously this story has a heavy focus on Niko and his relationship to his cousin, Roman. Without giving away too many details, it's the dynamics of that relationship and the motivations and mistakes, past and present, that each keep hidden from the other, that drive the narrative for most of the game. Their story is about the immigrant experience of two different personality types - those looking to the future and those running away from the past. We don't like to give away too many details because we want people to experience the story the way it was intended - by playing the game and getting sucked into the game world.
IGN: Is there anything in the trailer that people might overlook?
Rockstar: The level of detail - look at the wheels of the motor bikes, the details in the faces and light reflected in the river. This same level of details exists throughout the game - not just in terms of art, but also mission design, animation, physics, narrative, audio, AI and world atmosphere. Creating a detailed but still consistent and believable game world has always been one of our aims with any Grand Theft Auto, and for Grand Theft Auto IV it has led to an amazing amount of life and detail in every aspect of the production.
IGN: The stories in the past three GTA games all had their own feel (and were inspired by different eras). What is the vibe of the new story? Is it comparable to a popular movie or era?
Rockstar: The game is set today, so we wanted a story, world and set of characters that felt very contemporary. We don't feel the story is comparable to any particular movie. For one thing it is obviously much broader in scope than a movie script, as the game is far longer than any movie, and for another, we felt that the power of the new hardware gave us the freedom to tell stories in a more detailed and engaging way, so we no longer need to take prompts from movies and instead could take inspiration from the world itself. The game is very much inspired by the realities of living in New York in particular, and the world in general, right now. The story is long, more like a TV series or epic novel than one movie and has several major twists and turns in it.
IGN: Is there anything you can tell us about any of the locations in the trailer? I've noticed we see quite a bit of the interiors, are we going to be able to explore those?
Rockstar: Yes, the Liberty City that Niko will experience has a lot of interiors, and yes you can explore them in lots of different ways... Obviously, it depends on the location as to what happens there and what you can do or enjoy there.
Niko is always the last man standing.
IGN: About midway through the trailer something has Roman scared. Any hints you can give about what has Roman so shook up?
Rockstar: Roman is more of a lover than a fighter and he's made some very nasty people very angry. He's right to be frightened. We have tried to give all of the characters their own motivations, ambitions and needs, so that the narrative develops naturalistically as a result of the interplay of its characters.
IGN: Is the extended hand-to-hand combat sequence a sign of things to come?
Rockstar: We have worked incredibly hard to develop the hand to hand combat - as we have all of the key mechanics of the game - so the fighting in the game feels very powerful. Certainly in the first section of the game when Niko is a dirt poor immigrant scrabbling around to pay off debts, he has to use his fists a lot. Luckily, he's pretty adept at it.
IGN: You guys have gone with another obscure track for this trailer. Is there a reason for this? What is the song in the trailer?
Rockstar: The track is called King Ring by Serjoga. He's the most popular rap artist in Russia by far, and we chose it partly because we felt it captured the spirit of the game - Russian dance rap maybe epitomizes the melting pot mentality of Liberty City - but mostly because we felt the track gave the trailer a unique feeling and energy. The soundtrack (and the radio it is played on) has been expanded and developed for Grand Theft Auto's high-definition debut.
The song owns!
-
That trailer was really bad. You'd think you could at least a have a nice framerate or something...
well the framerate was actually improved over the last trailers. still, it's GTA, so don't expect anything too impressive graphically.
I'm pretty limp for this game. I mean, I can see why people are hyped for it because it's got all the production value and name power but it's not doing anything interesting. might rent it or buy it cheap eventually.
-
IT'S NOT DOING ANYTHING INTERESTING when hardly any of the gameplay features have been revealed.
lmao
I can't wait for the week before this game comes out and all the doubters are eating CROW and oh so excited for the game.
-
I'm saying it's not likely that it will be as amazing as GTA3 was the first time.
-
Most series aren't as amazing as the entries that made them popular, because then it was fresh and new. This goes for pretty much any notable game series.
-
yeah but I would prefer that R* go into new territory. I doubt the designers wanted to make another GTA game but this is a huge cash cow. The worst thing is that it looks like R* will milk it until it loses its popularity.
-
I hope to God this isn't gonna be anything like the previous 3 games. I want different gameplay.
-
i hope the story is good. gta gameplay has always been sloppy imo.
-
Graphics definitely look improved - not as murky as the original screens..
-
(http://users.telenet.be/coasterland/gta/snapshot20071206211215.jpg)
God this shot is so amazing...
-
well...I guess it's not as disappointing as SF4
-
What a terrible trailer. Himumu am suiciding. Assassin's Creed rapes and murders this shitpile.
This was the best selling franchise of last gen. . .why does this look like it has the dev budget of a B list game?
-
I dunno, I honestly don't think its that bad looking at all, graphically (aside from the frame rate and some blurry textures here and there), and I'll look for any reason I can to hate on the GTA series.
-
The graphics, physics and all the other effects are nice.
But the voice-acting and the entire style of the game is FUCKING GAY.
I wish GTA tried to be less GTA. It looked so promising with the first trailer. I thought it would be all in a serious tone, not without the humor, but a different style than the previous 3.
This was exactly what I was thinking after the first couple of brief trailers. I just pictured that they might go with a feeling of either Niko is just such a notorious badass, that he had to come to the States because he made too many enemies back home, OR that Niko needed to survive and he found himself doing inexplicable things (human trafficing) because he felt he had no choice in the matter.
Alas, it seems like the typical GTA lol we do crime and stuff attitude. I'm sure I'll pick this up around day one, get about 3/4 through and get stuck on a mission that absolutely pisses me off to the point I'll never pick the game up again...just like every other GTA in the series. But, in the end I'll feel as if I've got my money's worth and to me that's usually all the matters.
-

They hint at this interviews. He comes to America because his cousin Roman said that life in America was good and that Niko should come. Since Niko's hands are blood stained, he obviously has another reason to come to America.

Or maybe they decided to make a more traditional GTA trailer to please the fans who are kinda bummed out they delayed the game, which is a series first. Yeah, it could be that. ::)
-

I'm just sick of the whole forced comedic relief GTA tries to have in every cutscene. Scratch that, in every damn line. I bet he will be spouting some 'tough guy phrases' when you're out in the streets and shooting/punching people. Seriously, this game hasn't changed at all. Some nice physics and updated graphics but that's it. Voice acting is shit as usual, Niko sounds terrible. Damn...that first trailer with the operatic music had me fooled so much.
-
Or maybe they decided to make a more traditional GTA trailer to please the fans who are kinda bummed out they delayed the game, which is a series first. Yeah, it could be that. ::)
The following quote from Powerslave is just about to the "T" what I was going to reply...

Himu, you cannot deny that GTA has been nothing but a satire of different genres of the underworld. Compare the trailer that Powerslave is talking about, to the latest one. They are two completely different tones. I really thought that maybe with all the R* talk about bringing GTA to next gen, maybe they were also bringing a different attitude to the game is well. I wouldn't go so far as to say I feel mislead or anything...but, I just feel a little let down with this last trailer. My expectations were wrong, and they are going with the same familiar feel that made GTA popular. You really can't blame them for that, but it isn't going to work forever. I just thought that they were going a different route this time around.
-
They are two different tones. I think that's the point.
It COULD end being just like past GTA's, but basing all of this on a 2 minute trailer is silly. If you're expecting them to completely leave out all of the things that made GTA popular in the first place, you're crazy. You will still be able to go on rampages, you will still be able to cause mayhem, you will still be able to feel like a badass noone wants to fuck with. If they took that out, no one would buy it.
I will shall judge the game upon release.
-
no one is complaining about the mayhem and violence. they're complaining about the same repeated, crappy forced dialogue and story that leaves them uncompelled to finish any of the previous games.
-
Then don't buy it.
-
Then don't buy it.
so we're not allowed to complain about it? awfully convenient for gta fans. this is a thread about GTA, right? like discussions regarding GTA are supposed to go in here right?
hell, most of us said we were buying it, but we still have the right to complain about the faults that Rockstar has refused to address.
-
I just think it's silly to base the game's story off of the trailer. You can say,"I was hoping they were going to take another route this time" all you want, but fact is, we still know little about the game, or the game's story, and it will remain that way until a week until release when pirates like Mondain get the leak. There are a lot of annoyed fans who are mad that the game was delayed, so it makes sense to me for rockstar to address the people who are worried this new game wont' be gta-ish. There's two sides of the coin. R* needs to address the people who having waning faith in the series, and old fans like me who are worried it won't feel like GTA because they're going for an ultra serious mood. Either way, they're going to catch shit.
-
the story's never been that great in GTA though. And the style has always leaned more towards blowing up cars and slicing people's heads off. They might go slightly more serious with this story, but they're not going to radically change the second biggest cash cow in the gaming industry.
-
why shouldn't we go by the trailer? mixed with rockstar's past installments, I think it's a fair call to say it's going to be like the other GTA's in regards to the story. I don't think it's silly at all to base our opinions on the trailer.
i mean, there are certain things that GTA has always done right, and there are things they have always well... done horribly. It's great that you want the same thing, himuro. And i'm not judging your game tastes. mine just happen to be different and i don't want the same thing.
assassin's creed proved to me that an open environment game CAN compel me with the story. i'm just hoping rockstar will go down the same route.
-
I didn't say I wanted the same thing, but if I did get the same thing I wouldn't really mind either, because I like the old GTA's a lot. I actually feel the same way in some areas. I want a more serious story, something like The Departed but with immigrants...I think it'd be neat. The trailer didn't deliver anything like that, but it *did* deliver great acting. The acting is so good that I already feel as if I know what a lot of the characters' personalities are like. I like the humor, and the past trailers have shown that it won't be nothing but that like people are suggesting in this thread.
I just think that the previous two trailers give enough evidence to suggest that it won't be just what we saw in trailer 3. To me, trailer 3 is nothing but pure fan service, and I'm fine with that.
-
AC story/characters are really something special, very interesting and unique.
-
Well it's hard to appreciate AC's story when there's no subtitles.
-
No problem for me, my 5.1 does it's job but of course, i want subs.
-
The Departed with immigrants?
I doubt R* are going to focus on providing a compelling story. I'm sure they could, but they won't need to for this game. It's the farthest thing from story-driven. GTA games are just a bunch of movie references built into a coherent story. They certainly have no reason for it to be SERIOUS. Even the first trailers weren't that serious (getalife building).
-
i don't care about the subs in AC. i usually don't use subs anyways.
i just want them to try to make it better instead of the route they chose with SA which was just "BIGGER!!!"
-
Am Nintendho, the first trailer was very serious. It was a very non-conventional GTA trailer. Of course, there's stuff like the Getalife building. That's an element of GTA.
Anyways, Rockstar said in the interviews that it's not going to be based around movie references like in the past. We'll see if they deliver.
You doubt that they are going to focus on story this time? Did you even watch the third trailer? At all? That felt like a trailer for an actual movie to me.
-
i just want them to try to make it better instead of the route they chose with SA which was just "BIGGER!!!"
I agree. Fuck SA.
-
SA was the best one actually. The gameplay was slightly improved but the soundtrack was a lot better.
-
what? i think the soundtrack in VC shits all over SA's.
-
I dunno. There were a lot of songs I didn't care for in VC. I liked most of SA's songs though.
-
SA was the best one actually. The gameplay was slightly improved but the soundtrack was a lot better.
Yeah if you like shitty 90's rocksongs and gay RnB and stupid techno music and boring hiphop
-
I like SA's soundtrack the most. It's full of songs I grew up, especially since most of them are black people songs. Still, I prefer III and VC's soundtrack because SA's soundtrack has too much dead time. In III and VC there is always a song on any fucking station that I could play the game to, in SA, not so much. Still, it has the best *soundtrack*, but not the best one suited for GTA. Also, the commercials and talk radio sucked in SA.
The gameplay wasn't the best. It wasn't nearly as non linear as GTAVC's mission structure, the missions did not have multiple routes you could take to complete them, many of the missions consisted of by the numbers GTA missions, the difficulty was eased up considerably.
The story sucked. It had potential to be a good knock off of Boyz in the Hood and other classics, and be a good social outlook on the state of modern black America, but then it turns into fucking James Bond and stealing Jetpacks and bombing Jets and it makes no sense. GTA is about being a criminal, not be James Bond.
On top of that, SA has the least memorable cast in the console 3d GTA's - OG Loc is classic, Toreno (although he doesn't fit in the game at all), Tenpenny and Polowski, so is the stoner guy, but honestly those are the only great characters. The people you work for aren't interesting either. Since the second thing I like about GTA games, past the i can do anything I want gameplay, are the characters, SA disappointed on that front.
Further still, CJ is the worst GTA main character. In game he says shit like FUCK YOU and SORRY PAL, BUT YOU JUST GOT JACKED :lol but in the story he's a fucking moralistic pussy and it makes no sense. "YOU MEAN...I HAVE TO KILL HIM?!!?" You must be shitting me Cj. You have killed thousands you idiot. I think they did that because he's black and having a black main character who doesn't give a fuck would cast R* in a bad light.
The best thing about SA is the huge open world, and even then, there's tons of huge empty spaces that don't serve any purpose at all. In GTA1, 2, London, 3, and VC every thing in the cities serve a purpose. Not so much in SA.
Killing a fucker with a dildo is just lame btw.
-
Um it really doesn't.
-
i enjoyed gtaiii far more than sa--i quit playing it after finishing the ''storyline.'' imo the dialogue and characters in gta games have always been ok, but the actualy storylines have always been shit.
the va in gta is some of the best in a videogame
-
saints row 2 will destroy this, pack up your things R*
better graphics [and] a character customizer [and] online?
-
[and] better gameplay?
[and] better mission structure?
stop me if i'm going too fast
-
saints row 2 can destroy this in terms of gameplay, but it ain't GTA! less budget, less marketing and less sales!
-
[and] an even worse framerate than in gta
-
SR had terrible tearing in cut scenes.
really bad.
-
It's really bad, Himuro. The graphics aren't impressive on any level, and they are still not using cutting edge tech. I mean, it was forgivable last gen when GTA was this new phenom, but now? They have to put some elbow grease into it. Fuck coasting on their lazy asses. They made millions upon millions upon millions of dollars; what the fuck? Impress us! At least FUCKING TRY to impress us. They aren't even trying.
-

I think it looks really wtf in pics, but it looks good in video. I thought that the hanging from the helicopter and truck bits from the second trailer was fucking amazing graphically. I think the graphics in some shots are absolutely stunning, like this shot in the trailer for instance:
Then there's this. The fire effects are CRAZY.
The smoke effects are very impressive too:
And then there's this part...
Then you have the great facial animations on the characters, like that guy with the shot gun in the last scene of the trailer who says,"So you in big guy? Or are we gonna have to kill you?"
It's got nothing on Assassin's Creed, but compared a lot of next gen games that won't have environments nearly as big I think GTAIV's graphics are really impressive for the scale they're going for. I mean, the part where the guy falls on the car? Holy shit.
For us GTA fans, the graphics in the latest trailer have really exceeded our expectations.
-
I can't believe there are people that consider themselves fans of GTA but hate SA. Go back and play through III and VC. The controls are fucking beyond broken. It's amazing that we were able to put up with that garbage back when they came out.
I happen to like the story in SA too. Sure it's a little out there but when Tenpenny dropped CJ off in Angel Pines, the game took a different direction from all the mindless gangbanging and I was thankful for it. That's when the game really started to kick into gear. I was a little disappointed that in the end CJ ends up back on the block at Grove Street doing the same stupid thug shit he was at the beginning. That's my biggest pet peeve with CJ character. He seemed smarter than that.
-
So I finally just watched the trailer. I first started to watch it on my laptop, but it seemed choppy. I figured it was my shitty laptop, as it seems to do that with for some HD videos. So I streamed it to my TV through my 360. I found out that choppiness was the godawful framerate. Game doesn't look amazing and it doesn't look that bad either. Unless the framerate stays that bad.
And I think fans of GTA that don't like SA are ones that just felt burnt out on the series by that point. Well, that's more a reason why I waited so long to buy it. I got it this year and the controls just seemed so awful, even on the PC. I guess 3 and VC would seem just as bad now, but when they came out I was able to take(holy shit I can't think of the word right now) it
-
I can't believe there are people that consider themselves fans of GTA but hate SA. Go back and play through III and VC.
I have played GTAIII 7 times from beginning to end and I am going through it again right fucking now. It was my favorite game last generation and my most replayed.
Vice City is a better game than III but I like III more.
I don't even hate SA. I clocked 100 hours in the game and never got tired of it despite my complaints but even I will admit it was the weaker GTA for multiple reasons - reasons I already stated.
-
GTA3 :bow
-

GTA without gang banging is like Final Fantasy without a transexual as a main character. It doesn't make sense, it's a part of the series' identity.
That's another problem with SA. The gangs SUCKED. In III you had the mafia, the diablos, the triads, the southside hoods, the yardies, columbians, yakuza... all SA had was the grove street guys, ballas, those two mexican gangs in los santos that i forgot because they suck and you hardly interacted with them, the yakuza, random russian mobsters and well. that was it.
-

I wasn't burned out but one of my biggest reasons for disliking San Andreas is how distinguished mentally-challenged the whole storyline got, exactly like you said, with the whole gangbanger going superspy bullshit.
And a bigger reason is the music in the game. Radio Los Santos and a few songs from Radio X were good, but the rest of the stations were horrible and only featured like 1 or 2 good songs on it. The talkradio was disappointing and not funny as well.
But the biggest reason is how the environment still felt so... empty. SA is big but there isn't anything you can do on one part of the map that you can't do on the other side. There was no point in making it that big. Look at the whole country and the forest sides. There isn't anything interesting to do there. They could have at least thrown in a few hidden easter eggs or secret missions, but it was just void.
I guess 3 and VC would seem just as bad now, but when they came out I was able to take(holy shit I can't think of the word right now) it
'appreciate' :D

Me neither. I have played this game for more than 300 hours I bet. It's just the feeling of disappointment that made me so bitter about this game.
-
*I'm* the one who said gang banger gone super spy shit.
-

I knew this. My bad.

lol
GTA3 :bow
gta3 was my game of the generation last gen

I think I was just kind of GTAed out by the time SA came out. I just wanted something different, even a little different. The big draw for me with SA was the areas between the cities, and they were really little more than filler. I let myself get a little hyped there, and I ended up cold because of it.
For what it's worth, I liked the story and presentation in SA a whole lot, probably more than both previous entries. No problems there. No problems with the game in general. It was just an expansion pack too far. If it had been my first GTA, no doubt it would be the one I loved the most.
-
Fuck, the more I think about it the more it annoys me. This is gonna be the same as San Andreas. Walk to the 'mission' location, watch a shitty cutscene where Nicko walks into a quiet room and looks around, then some dumbass character greets him with a poor joke, poor and over the top body language occurs, mission starts.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. This whole R* holding its cards close to its chest thing sucks ass. I mean, it's ALWAYS sucked ass, but it sucks even more now that gaming is pricier. Tell us how the fucking game is going to be any better than the last one. It looks to display the same amount of subpar technical competence, the presentation is in the same vein of previous games, thus I think I am basically getting the same game again, and I am not interested in that. Fuck that.

Have you read the previews where they have mentioned a completely different mission structure, how enemies now have a line of sight and you can get away with crimes as long as you're crafty - making random killings that much harder, the new wanted system, and other stuff?

it's no saint's row 2

Well, I expected something to change, what with them using the same graphics engine as the previous games.
Video games are primarily a visual medium, and after this year, 2007, if you aren't at least trying to impress me, chances are I'm not going to pay much attention, unless you are an established gameplay name that could get away with skimping on the visual pizazz, like, say, Musou.

the bigger problem I have with GtA4's graphics is that the style isn't that unique. they're going for a realistic style while SA and VC got their time periods down really well and that kind of made up for the sub-dreamcast textures. I only played it on PC at highest everything but the graphics could never look good. with GTA4 they're going for a realistic look and that's stupid considering it'll be completely destroyed in everything compared to modern realistic games. especially considering the bad framerate.
-
TVC: You aren't impressed with *any* of the visuals in the latest trailer? =/
I guess it doesn't bother me because I don't think I've ever yawned playing a GTA game. I find them always fun no matter when, so I think I can count on GTAIV being just as fun.
You have your preferences and I have mine i guess.
I just hope I'm not the only playing when it comes out. I want to play with some peeps in mutliplayer.

I like this style more than VC and SA.

it looks great in motion, and some of the sequences in the trailer looked fuck awesome, so i don't really see the complaints about the graphics. it's just that the framerate is so low most of the time.

GTA4 looks like a rockstar game

Oh, believe me I will invest a couple of hundred hours in this game for sure. Cause like many people already know, GTA is all about free roaming, and I'm gonna have a blast at this like in the previous 5 games.
But it's just that I wish the series would mature a little bit. They can fill the entire game with jokes/references parodies and funny commercials and talkshows, but the interaction between the characters should change. Now that I'm saying this, it reminds me of GTA3. Then VC took the comedy road and SA did the same. If the game just could have kept the dramatic tone of the first GTA4 trailer, I would have been glad.
Still, I believe this is the core of GTA and maybe making it all too serious would have been bad, so we'll see.

I wish for better character interaction as well. One of the things I hate about GTA is that you don't get to see the characters outside of missions. Apparently, they are trying to remedy this, and you can now call up any character you want and hang out a bit, play mini games, or whatever and learn more about the character.
I agree with what you're saying, but basing all that on the trailer just really feels like premature judgment.
-
It's because SA's trailer and the endproduct didn't differ from eachother as well.
-
That's a good point, but Vice City's trailers were the same way.
-
Yeah, I didn't say VC because I weren't around during the VC hype. Didn't even have a PS2 then.
