Title: EB, tell me which movies to buy
Post by: Beezy on December 08, 2007, 01:15:40 AM
From this page only: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_6032562_1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000172611&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=hero-quick-promo&pf_rd_r=1K7VG14B9TMGAWFT3SJ1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=338653801&pf_rd_i=B000U62N1S

The player comes with 300 and The Bourne Identity, so I have to choose 5 more. Right now I'm thinking of getting:

Hot Fuzz
Knocked Up
Children of Men
Blood Diamond

Yay or nay? What do you guys think I should add/cut out?

The Searchers NO. Wait, why?
Disturbia why?
The Big Lebowski why?

I don't want Batman Begins. I saw it a few times already.

The Searchers is a classic film. If you appreciate good movies you'll love it. Plus I hear it's beautiful in HD

Disturbia is surprisingly good. I expected an MTV version of Rear Window, but it's actually a good suspense flick

The Big Lebowski is the fucking Big Lebowski. BUY IT

Bah, this isn't helping much. I think I'm just gonna get what's on my original list plus The Big Lebowski since everyone is recommending it.

I loved Knocked Up so I vote for that one. :)

I would say this, to be honest: If these are the first discs you watch on your new player, make sure their special effects packed blockbusters. Sure, I picked up a few classics on blugay (unforgiven and memento for example) but these movies dont LOOK like a huge improvement over their upscaled dvd counterparts.

I planned on getting it anyway, but thanks. :P

Yeah, I'm buying the first HD-DVD player shown on that page. What would YOU recommend then? Anything besides Blood Diamond fits this?

Nay on Children of Men unless you like pretending to enjoy arty fartsy movies that aren't really entertaining.

Batman Begins on Hd-dvd is a great transfer and has nice extra features.  It's one of the best HD discs so far so get it even if you've already seen it.

Most of the movies in the list are decent.  It's easier if I tell you which ones not to get:

I Now Pronouce you Chuck and Larry
Disturbia
Next

Haha, PD owned.

I never knew much about Children of Men, I just heard that it was good. I guess I'll switch it for Batman Begins. I don't really care to watch it again, but I need at least one movie that my nephew will be able to watch.

If you havent read the book you'll probably enjoy children of men. Its not an awful movie, or even an average movie, its an ABOVE AVERAGE MOVIE. I can also imagine how sex it will look in HD

Disturbia is not too bad for a night of entertainment.  It's not worth owning though.  I think PD just liked the chick.

Fuck Smooth Groove, get Children of Men.  You will at least enjoy it, and it's one of the better looking movies in recent memory.  It's hardly artsy fartsy, either.

CoM must be beautiful in HD. The cinematography is simply amazing and really brings life to the rather barren environments. There are like 3 awesome tracking shots in this movie, if not more

It's great because aside from fudging in the tracking shots, the movie is basically all organic, too.  Not much CG or computer assistance.  it's just a damned good looking movie, put together by people that must be naturally great with visuals.

My favorite scene is probably when they are at the one safehouse, with Clive Owen sneaking around the perimeter of the house to eavesdrop, and he's right by this stained glass looking window thing.  I can't even explain it, but the scene has this tension to it, but it looks so nice and beautiful.  I can't believe that they were able to find a place that beautiful by chance, but none of that safehouse appears to be a set.  They found somewhere that gorgeous in reality, and it's gorgeous in this very matter of fact, everyday way.  I never would have noticed the beauty in that location if not for the skillful way it was filmed and presented.  And there are a million shots like that in the movie.

And yes it is FUCK AWESOME in HD.

What do you mean by fudging? I'm guessing adding CGI to certain scenes, like the first explosion in the beginning of the film?

I need to see it again, but my favorite scene is probably that last few minutes of the HUGE tracking shot towards the end, where all the madness surrounding Owen stops for a moment to hear the cries of a child. For that brief moment the people are reminded of a since of humanity and life - only to be brought back to the violent reality of the present seconds later

The big tracking shots in the end are apparently done with CG trickery.  I mean, it's to be expected and all, but a caveat.  There had to be cuts in something that crazy.

Oh yeah, I think Mupes made a thread on that earlier. Gross.

Anyhow, I guess I would go with Babel, The Thing, Full Metal Jacket, The Frighteners, and Troy from there.

I don't get the masturbatory obsession with CoM. I mean it isn't even Cuaron's best movie. His best movie is Y Tu Mama Tambien yet everyone talks about the weaker CoM? It makes no sense.
