Title: Aww yeah - when I saw what The Shining Blu Ray was packing, I bent right on over
Post by: abrader on December 09, 2007, 03:53:02 PM
This was just a slight bit not as good as the outstanding "2001: Space Odyssey" transfer...

In short this is the most gorgeous version of the film I have seen in my entire life.

In this instance id say it IS worth investing in the Blu Ray version even if you already have the DVD - trade up for sure. I can see things in this version I have never seen before and I have watched the movie 15+ times easily and know parts of it as good as I know my own nose.

I only need to say one thing to get the attention of those experienced with this film on the screen, VHS and DVD...you know those little bits of lint and stuff you have seen every now and then in the frame on every other version of this film? Well I did not see one - the movie looks so good it looks like it was shot in 2006 on modern equipment....

Part of it do have that 3D look that you want to see in your Blu Ray disks....never before has Shelly Duvall's visage looked so terrifying....the

dead lady vision in room 23x that Jacks characters makes out with never looked so vomit inducing

You must buy this now.

Actually, the only one I have noticed is on the notorious staircase scene.  It's something of a shame that the one spot it can be noticed is during one of the most famous scenes in a film filled with famous scenes :)  But still, incredible transfer.  All those new Kubrick transfers are :o :o :o

I've probably seen the Shining at least 8 times before the Bluray transfer

watching it again on Bluray was a SPIRITUAL REVELATION

I may not have seen it in widescreen before the BD release, what with it being so frequently televised.

Even though it wasn't the technical best of the transfers, for whatever reason it's the one that jumped out best.  I mean, you EXPECT 2001 to look like buttsex, but The Shining was just a big surprise.

I remember in the interview scene - I COULD SEE AND COUNT THE LINT FUZZ BITS STICKING OFF OF JACKS JACKET!!!

Its so sharp I can see thread fibres!!!

I still say ACO was easily the most impressive. I mean, 2001 and The Shining both look better, but you expect that with 2001 being Kubrick's prestige picture, and with The Shining being relatively new and having a massive fanbase. How good ACO's transfer turned out really impresses me, for being an older film/the bastard child of Kubrick's filmography.

As for the films themselves, 2001 remains at the top, but watching all these Kubricks again has vaulted ACO from the bottom tier to just a hair shy of 2001 for me.

ACO is hardly bottom tier, something like Barry Lyndon or Paths of Glory deserves that dubious honor

I think Lolita is actually his bottom tier movie.  Paths has lots of fans.

I haven't seen Clockwork Orange Blu Ray yet.

Honestly I am not a big fan of movies with rape scenes.

I do have it on netflix tho.

I also come from the generation that wore the movie out by showing it too much....

I meant "bottom tier" in terms of critical and popular reception, not in terms of actual quality!

Barry Lyndon was bottom tier in critical reception? It got some Oscar nods which is more than you can say for stuff like Eyes or Lolita (both good movies however).
