mmm, dgen 1.70

it has a few minor music issues and when the main character sprite in several games gets hit, it doesn't blink but instead temporarily disappears

what're the best snes and neo-geo emus?

So homebrew actually works now on the slims?

8gb should be awesome for video too.  It'll be nice to have 4 movies at UMD quality for a long international flight.

If both an original and a slim are loading off memory sticks, would the slim still have faster loads because of the extra ram?

Just about everything worthwhile runs on Slim PSPs now.  They had homebrew up and running right from the start...the day the Slims came out in Japan, I hacked mine and had Neo-Geo and CPS2 running smoothly.

Here is the CPS/Neo-Geo author's home page, with the latest updates:

http://nj-emu.tfact.jp/

If both an original and a slim are loading off memory sticks, would the slim still have faster loads because of the extra ram?

Doesn't seem like it, BUT the extra ram can be used to make applications run better.  Take the Neo-Geo and CPS2 emulators, for example.  On a phat PSP, you needed to make cahce files for every rom, effectively doubling the size of each game.  The slim uses the extra memory to eliminate this...every CPS2 game can run on the ROM alone, and only a few Neo games need cache files now.  The emulators also run even smoother with no hiccups.

I use my PSP slim all the time...it's easily my most-played system.  Got an 8gb stick FILLED with stuff, and what's even better is that I can play it all on an HDTV too.

Lyte, does the slim have a better analog nub?  I've heard contradicting reports on this issue.

Oh stop it, STOP IT!!!
I can't resist any longer.

Lyte, do you know cheap places to get 8 gig sticks in Tokyo?

Edit: 14,500 yen... not too shabby.

That's better than what I paid!  Holy crap, the one I bought was "on sale" for 19,800 yen!   :o

Lyte, does the slim have a better analog nub?  I've heard contradicting reports on this issue.

It does feel a bit better.  It has a little more resistance to it.  I wouldn't call it a huge difference though.  The buttons are definitely better and the d-pad feels more responsive; those along with the system's weight (it's ultra light) and the TV-out are the biggest differences versus the original.

This is a pic I took the day I got the system back in September.  NJ's emulators were already just about perfect on the Slim at that point:

can any of the new slims be downgraded?  i'm thinking of picking one up as well.  i've gotta sell one of my phats, it's just picking up dust these days.

why would you need to downgrade it?

downgrade to 1.50 then update to hacked firmware.  or is the process different now?  i'm so out of the loop.  :-\

yer out of the loop. the new hotness is the 3.71 M33 firmware for the slims -- requires a pandora's battery. demi and/or tvc can help you. slims don't need downgrading, though.

finally, no need to downgrade to 1.50!

The PSP has a much better library now than 2 yrs ago but I still rarely beat anything on it.  I sold my 1st PSP after 3 months 'cause the games were crap PS2 ports.  PSP games are more interesting now but they are still too similar to console games that I have little reason to play the PSP at home.  I guess things might be different if I mod the PSP and use it as my 16bit machine.

oh my god how awesome is Pulse.

It's every Euro's wet dream.

it's making me doubt my hatred!

Great soundtrack from what I've heard... this song was always a favorite of mine (Guy Gerber - Sea of Sand):
