Title: I got Dragon Quest VII
Post by: Himu on December 12, 2007, 01:43:21 AM
I got Dragon Warrior VII. I found it for 15 dollars in great condition used at a electronics store here in Florida. I lucked out once again, it seems, because there's a lot of expensive DWVII's on Ebay. There are a couple of cheap Buy It Now's right now, especially one for 25 dollars though.

I'll probably go through some of it over Xmas break. Don't see a better time to go through such a long ass game.

I'm probably crazy, but it might be my favorite Dragon Quest.  Note that I have never played 5 and 6.  Or 3.

It starts out slow, but after that, it's all good.  It has a weird, quaint charm to it.

I wouldnt call you crazy. It seems that it's a highly regarded title. In fact, it seems all of the DQ's that have the dharma temple are considered the best. The exclusions being IV and V which still remain fan favorites.

i love dq7. it's a leviathan of a game, with the slowest first 20 hours ever, but if you're in the mood for its weird pacing, it is utterly absorbing.

I never could finish that one. I got about 50 hours in (still on the Disc 1) and I just abandoned it. It's all fun and games right up until you miss a rune fragment somewhere.

So it takes 20 or so hours to get your classes in VII? what do you do in the mean time? Just fight normally? That'd be pretty boring if there's nothing to distinguish the characters from one another.

I just want to say this game has the worst Toriyama art I've ever fucking seen. I'm a big fan of Toriyama art, and I like pretty much every character design the guy has made in most DQ's, but holy shit is this art awful in this game. It's like they're throw away characters he never used in the past.

I think the monster design is fine, but I don't like the characters.

Characters have their own individual skills too, before they get classes.

Well, the monster designs are a given since many of them will likely be recycled from past DQ's, but like, the character art...holy shit.

They have their own individual skills? Sounds good to me. Can't wait.

Hmmm I've put some time into it and I like it a lot so far. It takes its time but that's not a bad thing. The combat is FAST and OMG @ the animations :o

Maribel is a slut. I bet she gets deep dickin by both the hero and Kiefer AT THE SAME TIME  :o

I think the combat speed makes DQ.  The change in speed, even if slight, in 8 was one of the things I actively did not like.

DQVIII was my first DQ so it didn't bother me, but after playing and beating I, II, and V, I tried out VIII and holy shit. I can't blame people for hating on the game because of the battle speed. It really IS much slower.

yup. i don't mind shallow combat and random encounters if they are FAST. combat chugged in dq8 between the animations and the streaming.

I am liking this game a lot. I have my issues, which are technical, but for the most part I'm liking it a lot despite the slow start.

The camera angles are really bad.  :-\

My memory of the game is very faint, but I do recall being very disappointed by it back in the day.  You couldn't accuse any of the Dragon Quests from being non-linear, but this felt like the biggest offender of the bunch.  From my memory, there was like a light/dark world...or some kind of variation on the same worlds and you had to go back and forth finding pieces of a map before travelling there.  I put over a hundred hours into it but didn't finish....the last place I remember being was in some area where the level rotated or some shit.

Jesus, I can't believe I found DQVII this forgettable even though I listen to the soundtrack relatively often.  Maybe I should give it another shot.  I just wish it'd be remade on the DS so I would actually give it a second chance.

I seem to be in the minority on this...and a lot of things.  I'm probably just out of touch with all things that are nice.

Oh, and I'm no graphics whore, but fucking Beyond the Beyond looked better.  Chrono Trigger looked a bajillion times better.  Hell, DQ III remake looked better to me.  The camera and sloppy sprites looked like ass.

Well, this may be true but playing it on a ps2 with the smooth option isn't too bad. It looks better than some other psx rpgs like Xenogears.

really really liked it, but sometimes progression was irritating when you'd have to find shard pieces and didn't know where to look when you missed one

You are crazy!  I played it for three hours.  Had already backtracked twice and still no battles.  At that point, I quit.

VIII is the best DQ to make it to the states, hands down.

8 was good, but best? I'd have to replay all of them in order again.

Uhhh you played the game three hours and there were still no battles. And? Lots of rpgs have long prologues. Aren't you the person that advocates Square games? Kingdom Hearts I and II have prologues that are far longer than DWVII's.

The shard pieces were my biggest issue with the game.  Because you had to collect every single one of them and many were placed randomly in cabinets etc., I felt forced to compulsively investigate every nook and cranny.  This isn't fun for me, I feel exploration should be more relaxed.  I wish it were more like Mario 64 where you only need a certain portion of the stars/shards to proceed.

I actually liked the prologue a lot.  I'd like more games (and media in general for that matter) to unfold at a natural pace instead of having to use the beginning to hype themselves up.

III is the best of the Dragon Warrior games released in the States (NES version without whips/boomerangs even if the interface is an archaic pos).

From what I've played DQIII, DQVII is far more interesting, but then I haven't really played much of DQIII yet. It'll be the DQ I play after VII.

There's just something boring about creating your own characters when your own character has a backstory and the like. Does DQIII have proper characters and characterization like all the other DQ's?
Title: Re: I got Dragon Quest VII
Post by: cubicle47b on December 21, 2007, 04:31:49 AM
Only the hero has characterization (and very little at that) except for a sequence in the Americas with a user-made merchant.  The game's strengths are its world (it's huge and heavy exploration is mandatory), class system, and how it ties in with Dragon Quest I&II.

If you care about the story/characters a lot VII is certainly going to fit your tastes better.  I see III as the perfect version of what the original wanted to be.

Do you have crazy adventures in DQIII?

I love the adventure game elements in DQVII. I love how you have to explore every nook to find shards, and I love the story so much. My favorite island so far DIDN'T HAVE ANY FIGHTING AT ALL: the one where all the people have turned to stone. :bow
