Saw this last night. While it's definitely one of the most detached, almost heartless films I've seen since ACO (and I love ACO), True Romance still manages to be a worthwhile film. Calling Tarantino juvenile is certainly nothing revolutionary, but to me this seemed like an extremely juvenile fantasy flick. A comic book geek loser infatuated with Elvis manages to bag a hot babe, steal half a million bucks worth of coke from a gangster, fuck said hot babe in a phone booth, get $500 from his loving father he hasn't seen in 3 years, move to Los Angeles...etc. It's like a cinematic "what do you want for Christmas" letter, writter by some little kid from a dysfunctional family. Interestingly the "romance" aspect of the film still manages to seem believable.
But don't get me wrong, I liked the movie overall. It's definitely one of the more inventive flicks I've seen in awhile. I mean, it's a romantic film that happens to be a bloody gangsta flick; like Bonnie and Clyde on speed - eh, more like meth - everything seems visceral and over the top. From the very first "action" scene in the brothel it's clear the movie isn't going to be a standard gangster affair; every action scene feels almost like the pen scene in Casino, in terms of the violence. It reaches its apex during torture scene with Arquette and a shockingly menacing James Gandophini. It's hard to watch, and is almost disgusting.
But speaking of disgusting, I was totally turned off by the "nig.ger wop" discussion between Walken and Hopper. Very few things like that stir any type of emotion in me today, but that entire scene was so crass it became slightly insulting to me as a black person. I would imagine that my reaction to it is completely different than everyone else on this board. Outside of this scene the film is pretty well written, and brought to life by some great acting.
Fuckin Gary Oldman is amazing. That was a performance that you see, you KNOW who the actor is, but still manage to totally forget. Brilliant. Brad Pitt was also amazing. He seems to be best when either insane (12 Monkeys) or drugged out (TR).
Overall it was a good flick, definitely worth checking out
8/10

Yea, that scene that insulted you was by far my favorite part in the movie.
Anyway, it would've been better if Tarantino directed it. The score would've been better, that's for sure.
-
The Walken/Hopper scene is the best scene in the movie. So classic Tarantino. Man, I miss the days before Walken was a shitty joke cartoon character.
-
Watch the other movie I gave you PD
-
What is the other movie, Cheebs. I will try to predict PD's response.

I gave him True Romance and Big Lebowksi (he wanted to see a coen brothers movie)
-
Oh Jesus. have no idea how he will respond. How has he not seen Lebowski? Has he seen any Coen Bros movie?
I predict that he will say Lebowski is overrated. Aside from that, I cannot be sure.
-
To be honest, I thought Lebowski was overrated (by my friends who loved it) the first time I saw it. But we were drinking and hardly paying attention. The second time I watched it I definitely liked it. The third time, it was fucking awesome. It basically gets better every time I watch it.
-
Well, we all know PD considers himself something of an iconoclast or contrarian. He knows that on the surface, Lebowski is universally loved. He also knows that it is a grower and that many do not enjoy it on their first viewing. I think he will acknowledge the latter while denying the former: "I know most people don't like it the first time they see it, but I watched it twice and I still think it's dumb."

I discovered that from myself too. Hated it the first time but it got better. Still think it's overrated though :P

I think it is overrated in the same way that the Frat Boy mentality overrates many good-to-great things. I think Lebowski is a fantastic movie, but I don't think it is the be-all-end-all that its biggest meatheaded proponents would say it is.
-
Did you just call Triumph a frat boy?
And a meathead?
-
Lebowski is a good film but every time I hear people call it Coens best I always cringe.
-
Hmm, I think Triumph would probably agree with my PoV. He probably views Lebowski as similar in quality as myself.
I love Lebowski. I have it in HD. Do you know any of the Frat Boy Meatheads I speak of? If you did, you would know what I was talking about.

Yea, you're probably right. Forgetting about that, you're pretty spot-on at least concerning my friends. Hah, I answered your question before I even saw it.

I'm a contrarian but not by choice. There are many movies I've liked which, according to your logic, I should have hated or disliked. For instance, I loved Brazil (watched it again two nights ago), which I should have hated just to give you a fit. I liked Army of Darkness but the contrarian thing would be to call it average and hope Willco took time off from being such a successful contributor to society just to pummel me.
I'm not going to get my hopes up for Lebowski, but I'm pretty sure I'll like it; it's definitely...right up my alley

Really?
I gave AOD a fair chance, and I wanted to like it. Sadly, it's not a good movie; I didn't even see the whole thing. 30min convinced me.
Grits falling on people's heads? Ash having two heads, and then shooting the other one after muttering "I'm the guy with the gun, lolz"?
Or what about the little people jumping down his throat? WTF is that

Army of Darkness surprised me. I remember posting a thread about it being bad - I had come to this conclusion after watching around 5 minutes. IIRC it was the scene where a bunch of little Ashes attack the real one, in a kitchen.
After watching the film from beginning to end I gotta say...I liked it more than Evil Dead 2. I dunno what the consensus is in terms of people's opinions on which of the three films is best, but AoD was just very entertaining to me, and I picked up on the humor more so than Evil Dead 2.

that scene between hopper and walken was fucking amazing. i was in awe while watching that.
and arquette has some amazing boobs
