Anyone who knows me will tell you that I rarely like comedy films. I'm rather serious in real life, and when I do laugh it's unexpected because I have a rather dark sense of humor. That being said, I busted out laughing many times while watching this movie - something that very few movies make me do (Hot Fuzz and Take the Money and Run come to mind).
The best comedies are usually inhabited by colorful characters, and in this regard The Big Lebowski is pretty fucking ace. The Dude, Walter, Donnie, Mrs. Lebowski, fuckin Jesus...god damn. Each character is unique and fits perfectly. The Dude is basically a mellow, chill dude who loses his precious rug in a robbery pulled off by a few "amateur" criminals. The rest of the film unfolds as The Dude and his buddies try to reclaim the rug, save a rich guy's daughter, and get paid...all while bowling, smoking, and making me extremely interested in trying a White Russian. Holy shit that looked good.
Jeff Bridges is a great actor, and really becomes his character here. But while The Dude is indeed awesome, I thought Goodman really stole every scene as Walter. If I had to sit down and list a bunch of hilarious characters from films, he's in the top ten hands down. The portrayal of a Vietnam vet constantly justifying his crazy antics - "am I right?!?!" - was hilarious. Goodman nails every scene. :lol
In fact, nearly every performance is great. Honestly I can't really think of any complaints about the movie, outside of maybe the hallucination scenes went on for a bit too long - but hell, each is entertaining, especially the particularly extravagant one where The Dude is dancing on checkered stairs, and then helps Julianne Moore insert her fingers into a bowling ball in such an erotic manner. Almost got a hard on :o
This is my first Coen film, so I don't really have a frame of reference to compare styles or anything like that.
9/10

He only likes it because I called him out on how he was planning to hate it.
Wait, it is your FIRST COEN BROS FLICK?
-
not 10/10? This is as bad as Assassins Creed's 4.5
-
I haven't watched it yet.

I love how you review these films ignoring the fact that EVERY WHITE PERSON HERE HAS SEEN THESE MOVIES.

It's like being in a time machine to 1998!

I love the Big Lebowski, but Raising Arizona is the funnier Coen

So I'm not white? My life has been nothing but a lie.
Every white person (that has gone through puberty).

They need to special edition dvd that fucker up. The only DVD release so far has been a non-anamorphic bare-bones with a shitty transfer.
-
I have this movie on HD-DVD too. I can watch it BETTER than PD.
-
Eh dude, I think he meant "every white person who's not poorer than a black person."
TVC: Nah the movie was right up my alley. And yeah it's my first Coen

Go see No Country for Old Men!

Go see No Country for Old Men!
He'd probably think it was Unforgiven II: No Taste Pee Dee Bugaloo.
-
Go see No Country for Old Men!
he needs to see raising arizona and fargo first.
Those 2 with lebowski are the definitive (pre-no country) coen brother movies.
I'd go as far to say Arizona is my favorite.

I just gave your favorite movie a great score, ease off my scrotum a bit

I haven't seen Fargo, actually. The friend who I saw No Country with hated it, but he really liked No Country.

What did you think of Raising Arizona?

Blood Simple is a tight little movie, too.
Fuck, I like almost all their movies.
The only Coens I don't really care much for are The Man Who Wasn't There, LadyKillers, and Intolerable Cruelty.
-
People will sometimes try to tell you that O Brother isn't really one of their best, but it so totally is, and if you didn't hear the soundtrack to the point of getting sick of it when the movie released, I guarantee that you will love it.
It's not their number one best movie, but it is easily in the top three.
-
People have told me that The Big Lebowski is the most accessible Coen film for first viewing. So what should I see next

I thought you were a white woman- gross. White women shouldn't have scrotums.

my top 5 would go:
1. Raising Arizona
2. O Brother Where Art Thou?
3. Fargo
4. Big Lebowski
5. Blood Simple

I haven't seen it either. :-[ I'm just as bad as PD when it comes to not having seen many movies. :'(
-
It runs a close second to Raising Arizona with me. RA wins on the funny, but O Brother has charm to spare and a fantastic soundtrack.
-
John Goodman is :bow in O Brother
-
my top 5 would go:
1. Raising Arizona
2. O Brother Where Art Thou?
3. Fargo
4. Big Lebowski
5. Blood Simple
That's about how I feel, too. I would put Barton Fink tied next to Blood Simple in the five slot.

I don't like him either, although I really like The Family Man (stfu heartless haters). Nic just tries too hard to replicate Jimmy Stewart's stutter delivery thing, and he does it horribly. His mannerisms are also similar to Stewart's. Stewart is easily my favorite actor of all time but Nic just rubs me the wrong way. I would advise him to try to be himself, but then again he IS pretty boring...

O Brother Where Art Thou?
-
fargo > lebowski
with that said, i fucking love o brother. and the reason people will tend to not like it as much because it has someone awesome and popular such as clooney in it. they're all jealous of his looks. clooney :bow
-
O Brother was alright, I guess.

No Country for Old Men proves hispanic psychopathic hired killers do it with style
