A friend came over earlier today and I realized that Call of Duty 4 doesn't. That's the only problem that I got with it so far. :(

yeah halo 3. if you recover your friend's gold profile than you can play ranked team modes but no free for all modes obviously. honestly I think halo 3 is your only choice. there's not that many split screen online games.
for split screen games I can think of that you can't play online but are fuk awesomer in split screen:
EDF 2017
R6: Vegas
Gears (not sure if you can do split screen deathmatch online though)

That sucks. :(
I guess I'll try to get some games that are fun with splitscreen or co-op offline. I'll start with EDF.
Edit: Changed the thread title.

yeah I wish it had online and less lag but it is by far the best co-op game I have ever played. also really good for parties where you pass the controllers around since each level takes like 5 minutes and there's only 4 buttons to learn.

Yeah, it's dumb how CoD4 allows for two-player split-screen offline, but not online.
Anyway, here's your best bets for split-screen play off the top of my head:
-Halo 3 (allows for online and offline co-op AND deathmatch)
-Gears Of War (allows for online and offline co-op AND deathmatch)
-Samurai Warriors 2 (offline co-op)(horizontal split-screen)
-Dynasty Warriors Gundam (offline co-op)(vertical split-screen WHY KOEI WHY)
-Warriors Orochi (offline co-op)(horizontal split-screen; limited to same characters for both players)
-Earth Defense Force 2017 (offline co-op)
Out of the three Koei games, Samurai Warriors 2 is the best for co-op, IMO. The problem with Orochi is that both players have to use the same three characters on their teams, and Gundam uses an annoying vertical split-screen.
You can also always go the old-school route and play some XBLA games like Contra, Double Dragon, and TMNT. Don't forget about the co-op mode in Splinter Cell 3 either.

Vertical split kicks ass on widescreens.
I have a widescreen HDTV. I didn't like the way Gundam was split, and neither did my friend. We wanted horizontal like all the other Koei games.

Gears of War is $45 on amazon right now. I don't think I'll be able to find it cheaper than that anywhere. I might as well get it.

the online deathmatch is pretty hard to get into though (people are too skilled). you'd be better off with halo 3 I think for campaign and online games.

EDF FTW
