Title: Blade Runner HD Collector's Whatever Thread
Post by: Eel O'Brian on December 17, 2007, 10:33:04 PM
The Moviestop here sometimes does midnight launches for new releases (they're an off-branch of Gamestop), and tonight they are doing one for Blade Runner.  I have never been to one of these unspeakably geeky events, but since I took a nap this afternoon and as a result will be up until 3 in the morning, I believe I will go pick mine up.  Reports on the shiver-inducing nerdthrong forthcoming.

Anyone else getting/already got this?

I've had the Blu-ray regular version preordered with Amazon since August 7th. There's a supposed "production delay," so hopefully they ship it out soon.

It's been a major influence on the look and tone of Science Fiction movies since it was released.

What's so great about this movie? I've never seen it.

Technically it's an amazing film, and still influences sci fi today. In terms of quality overall, it's a criminally overrated film. In other words it's the 80's version of 2001

You are soooooo clueless.  There isn't a scale on which 2001 can be overrated.  It is on the shortlist for best movie evar.  It's not even in the same class of quality as Blade Runner.

That's not saying much. Face it, both are technical marvels but overall still manage to be average films. The same goes for the Birth of a Nation and the original King Kong

2001 is an average film?  You might take the cake from Himumu for biggest dumbass of the week.  2001 is as close to an objectively good movie as they come.  By the sheer number of accolades the movie gets, don't you think that it is more likely you are missing something than it being an average film?  Then again, Forrest Gump and To Kill a Mockingbird are your favorites, so I don't even know why I'm wasting my breath arguing quality to you.  There's nothing wrong with being a simple man, PD, but know when you are out of your breadth.

Nah, the film is quite pedestrian on every level outside of the technical mastery. It's certainly not the only average film that has been met with wide acclaim and praise. With respect to its praise it has an 82% fresh rating on RT from the "cream of the crop."

And Forrest Gump isn't in my top ten. I'm sorry TVC, but you're wrong

No, nevermind.  I'm not talking to you.  Send me a PM when you learn that you are not the center of the universe and that when your opinion does not match the majority, you're not credible when you make blanket statements like labeling something "pedestrian."  If it's pedestrian to you, and the majority thinks it is brilliant, you are clearly not seeing something that everyone else does.

Send me a PM when you learn not to be a jackass, and I'll remove you from my ignore list.

The sheer idiocy of labeling a film that is so open to many interpretations as pedestrian is laughable.  Forrest Gump, To Kill a Mockingbird, these each have simple, simple interpretations.  PD just doesn't know how to take in works of art and form his own conclusions.  He probably needs to be spoonfed details or else he won't understand.  Stick to Shawshank, sucker.

I'm sure PD would be all over it if Tom Hanks was acting like a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow in it.

Fuck, PD had THELMA AND LOUISE on his favorite movies list.  Ridley Scott Blade Runner?  FUCK NO!  GIMME HIS CHICK FLICK!

But no, Patel, WE'RE wrong.  PD's extreme minority opinion is clearly the objective truth here.  Everyone in the past 30 odd years has been WRONG!

2001 is a 7/10 type film. Sadly people want to judge it on visuals first, quality second. IF that doesn't apply to Star Wars it doesn't apply to 2001

Dude, I'm not judging it on visuals.  Heck, by today's standards, the visuals aren't even that good.  You just don't grok the movie, but rather than admit that, you label it as average and go back to watching Gump, Thelma, and Mockingbird.  You're a simple man; it's okay to admit that.
Title: Re: Blade Runner HD Collector's Whatever Thread

I thought the visuals held up pretty fucking well. It's more about the cinematography than anything.

Title: Re: Blade Runner HD Collector's Whatever Thread
Post by: TVC15 on December 18, 2007, 01:02:01 AM
I wouldn't even call 2001 complex.  As a matter of fact, its simplicity is one of the neatest things about it.  It is, however, an extremely abstract movie.  Don't blame the movie, labeling it "pedestrian" (how on earth can you say it is pedestrian?  How is it middle of the road?  Say what you will, but how is the movie AVERAGE in any describable way?  Oh, it's not, you're just a fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow), just admit that you didn't get it.  It's okay, I don't get every movie either.  I don't slander them afterwards, though, unless they are clearly bad.
Title: Re: Blade Runner HD Collector's Whatever Thread
Post by: Smooth Groove on December 18, 2007, 01:03:21 AM
2001 still looks nice but I seriously doubt that young people still find it an engrossing film because of its visuals, like PD's suggesting.  If you ask someone today why they liked 2001, he would mostly like put stuff like the thought provoking plot, sense of loneliness, interesting villain ahead of the visuals.

He thinks the part with the monkeys was kinda racist.

So I asked him what the less savory aspects were, and he responded with HOW IS IT PERFECT.  IE, he didn't have an answer.  I caught him talking out of his ass, and he couldn't even be buggered to make up a "less savory" aspect.

Ban his ass.  I'll forward the PM thread to anyone that wants it.  His ass is cold busted.

As I have said before, I have no problem with people "faking it," just don't get busted doing it.

PD, take note of why Mandark and Drohne are so successful.

To be a master psuedointellectual, you must first be reasonably intelligent to begin with. If you don't meet this requirement, go back to ordering wrestling DVDs. For the rest of you, the first step is vocabulary. Knowing the right way to use words is indispensable. Get a thesaurus and a dictionary, and whenever someone corrects someone else on their grammar, make a note of it. Also, pronounce things correctly. Nothing is more gauche than mispronouncing a semi-literate word. This is a major step.

What's wrong with having a Capra classic in my top 5? Those are my favorite films. I could laugh at you for having fucking Robocop in your top 10 on similar grounding.

Favorite doesn't necessarily mean best. Godfather and Rear Window are better FILMS than Mockingbird in nearly every aspect, but Mockingbird is still my favorite film.

The Capra movie is cheese.  Robocop is cheese, action, violence, comedy, and satire.  The Capra movie is an effective melodrama, but Robocop is so much more.  I bet I could easily argue that Robocop is a movie of great quality, and convince people.  If given the choice between Robocop and a predictable Capra melodrama, I would go with Verhoeven any day.

Movies to you, PD, are nothing more than entertainment.  Kindly never take one of my recommendations again. . .I shoot over your head.

ANYWAY

Okay, just got back.

I am NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR participating in such fucktardery again in my life.  First of all, everyone there was at least 15 years younger than me.  Question - what was the exact year where everyone under 25 just gave up on combs and hairbrushes?  Also, what's with that fucking haircut where you try to form a shark fin with your hair?  Soaphorns were fun when I was five...and in a fucking bathtub.  And if you wear your baseball hat skewed and pulled down over one ear, you need to be held down and have that ear cut off your head with a pair of dulled scissors.

What I'm trying to say here is that the faggotry was rampant.

They had pizza and generic sodas on a table.  You know, shit like "Dr. Fizz" and "Mountain Lightning."  I passed, because you had to pick up the slices with your hands, and who knew what kind of crabs and genital warts and dingleberries those unwashed lumps were digging at before they stuck their dickbeaters in those pizza boxes.

Then, they couldn't get the computers to recognize the DVDs that were going on sale on the 18th.  So we all stood around like idiots for a long while.  One guy in line was raving about Rob Zombie's Halloween, and another two were chattering excitedly about the sequel to Transformers.  Others were talking about how great the Pirates movies were.  I suddenly felt very ashamed for buying the Transformers HD DVD, because I helped set cinema back about five years with that purchase.

FINALLY they decided to just ring everything up under different SKUS and write it down to switch over later.  When I get to the head of the line with my preorder slip, the girl looks at me and says "Oh, you had the HD one?  I'm sorry, that was delayed..."

Only, it wasn't.  I had seen it on the new release shelf when I walked in the door.  I walked over and pointed at it at the same time she found the big stack sitting right in front of her.  I think the guy behind me was about to freak out when she said that, because I heard his friend tell him to calm down.

I live about two blocks from the Moviestop.  In better weather I can walk there if I feel like it.  I left at five minutes to 12, and got back at 12:45.  For a fucking HD DVD.  Ugh.  I feel so embarrassed.

Groo, I didn't get the suitcase thing, if that's what you were thinking.  I just got the regular set.  I didn't want to pay all that money for a matchbox car and some postcards inside a fake briefcase.  The regular HD and Blu Ray sets are about the thickness of two single cases, and the same height.  I don't think you need a picture - it's the same size as the Die Hard set.

Now I'm going to check out the picture quality.

You people have no fucking taste whatsoever.  It's a wonderful life isn't cheese until the very end, it's one of the rawest Capra films ever up until the last five minutes or so.  Jimmy Stewart gave a terrific performance, and the desperation in the character is reflected in his own life at the time - this was pretty much it for him.  He was going to give up acting, because he though people didn't want to see him anymore.

Jesus, stop attacking other films to justify your enjoyment of a particular movie, you dickheads.

I have a 720p HD rip right here. . .I can just stream it to my 360 and not have to deal with the mouthbreathers and PDs of the world.

Hey, Eel, I said it's an effective melodrama.  I didn't do anything even NEAR the ballpark of distinguished mentally-challenged that PD was batting in.

What's it ripped from?  Do you get surround with the rip?

Hmm, this is a bit overkill.  I'm not sure Blade Runner needs five discs worth of material.  The good news is it's only $30 or so, depending on where you get it.  I paid $13 over my trade reserve of $20.  That's not bad for an HD movie.

I'll probably take it back.  I've had skips before with HD-DVD but never with Blu-ray.  Supposedly, BDs are more scratch tolerant.

BTW, here's an early review for the HD-DVD.

Jesus, you have Capra-corn in your top 5.  Your opinion is completely moot.  I'm not even sure you think cinema is an art.

You're dismissing Capra as mere "cheese" yet want to critisize me? Jesus. And I fucking hate Robocop. It's a movie I admit is pretty damn good, but it just turns me off to the point I can't watch it.

You don't know what movies are to me, and just because I like It's a Wonderful Life, which is very respected - doesn't help your argument. All you're doing is contradicting yourself

Notice how It's a Wonderful Life isn't available in HD, but 2001, Blade Runner, and Robocop are?  Only good movies make it to HD.  Classics.

There's nothing wrong with a classic melodrama, PD.  Some of us just like movies that require a modicrum of thought, a bit of challenge, to grok.

There is a Two-Disc DVD version available, I saw it at Moviestop - comes in a blue box.  I don't know what's in it - probably just the final cut and some supplementary material.

And, that's two for two on the Blade Runner deal. Got the second one home, opened it, and two of the discs were loose. The guy at the store even let me shake it to make sure, and I didn't hear or feel anything - they were wedged tight. Luckily, the first disc was still on the hub, but the work print disc is nice and scuffed, as is one of the DVD supplementary discs. This was the last HD DVD set they had at Moviestop, too. I'm either going to take the scratched discs back and let them run it through their buffing machine - if that's advisable - or I'm going to email Warner and see if they'll mail me replacement discs.

I'll say this about Blu Ray - that coating is a point in their favor. Out of all the Blu Rays I've rented through Netflix, only a couple have had any noticeable scratches, whereas the HD DVDs seem to scratch just as easily as DVDs. The HD DVD camp needs to get on that hard coating situation pronto. And both sides need to fix the packaging issues on multi-disc sets.

Goddamnit.
