When they were first announced I didn't really pay too much attention to HDTVs. I knew that they will drop in price significantly just like any other tech so there was no rush to buy one.
But my decision to ''jump in'' was prompted initially by HD gaming, specifically Gears of War. Gears looks great in SD, too. But seeing it and playing in HD was a revelation. I seriously doubt I would have a HDTV if all the major consoles only supported 480p. Most hardcore gamers I know also say that the HD consoles got them buy an HDTV. And while I love HD video, I could have waited longer if consoles were out the HD equation especially due to the format war.
Currently, I have a Samsung 23'' Flat panel LCD. Not the best or the biggest but it suits my needs fine. I doubt I'll buy anything else in a while being the cheapskate that I am.
What pushed you into HD?

Bought a new house in '04. Needed something to put in it.
Since then I've been masturbating to "Sunrise Earth" on INHD1 everyday.

yeah, i bought my first shitty hd lcd circa 360 launch. i really didn't give a damn about tvs before that -- probably because my old sony crt was better than i realized. in a way a bad lcd is a great introduction to all the potential pitfalls of display technology. i learned a lot from that tv's problems. now i've got a 32" bravia that i'm also kind of unhappy with...i'll probably buy a plasma next year.

I've been watching TV in HD for a few years now, it was a pure pricing issue. when HD-DVD went down enough in price I jumped in.

Yup my FUTURE FUTURE plans include getting like a 22 inch LCD monitor and a 360 so I can jump into the HD realm :o

HD gaming did. I didn't want any HD consoles until I had an HDTV. I got my 42" Panasonic plasma thanks to a sale I heard about at Sears a week before Thanksgiving. I've been reading up on shit about HDTVs for like the past year and I decided that I wouldn't get anything besides a plasma.
Then I got a 360 about two weeks into December. CoD4 :bow
I didn't really care about HD movies until I heard that amazon was giving away 7 free movies + 5 free mail-in ones when you bought an HD-DVD player, so I got the $200 Toshiba HD-DVD player around the same time that I got the 360.

I got my first HD set (a 22 inch Samsung LCD) when I started the whole HTPC route....too much fucking tinkering for my tastes...never worked out right. I loved those WMVHD clips you could download from MS. Then the 360 launched and I bought a 32 Sony CRT.....
...right now I have a shitty 32" Sharp Aquos. I want to upgrade to a larger set but just cannot justify a huge fucking screen in my living room right now.

Yep, any self-respecting sports fan owes it to themselves to get a good HDTV.
That goes for gamers as well, but live sports looks better than anything on my hdtv, 360 and hd-dvd included.

shitty? my aquos is nice. sexily calibrated for optimal effect.
