Title: Hmmmm Juno was really good
Post by: Himu on December 29, 2007, 01:55:01 AM
Not enough Cera, but really good movie. Top 5 of 2007 material for me.

It's a movie that is really easy to make you sympathize with the characters due to their situation, but Juno goes beyond all of that and actually makes you love these characters. I thought Juno would be just another run of the mill pregnant teenager but she ended up being probably the most damn likable character I've seen all year.

It was surprisingly funny too. I mean, it wasn't roll on the floor laugh worthy, but I got more than a few chuckles out of it.

Check it out, especially if you like romance comedy.

Juno is amazing. Ellen Page's witty comebacks always amazed me. My favorite has to be:

"You should've gone to China, you know, 'cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events."

hyper-snappy dialogue in Juno ruined the whole thing for me.  It was ok.

Been tryin to tell you fools it's a good movie.
Everyone who sees it loves it. It's just some EB'ers automatically decide to hate movies if critics love them for some reason. There was a similar backlash to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine last year.
Title: Re: Hmmmm Juno was really good

I saw it, I don't bow to eb trends (really liked LMS), and the dialogue in Juno really did ruin the movie.
Title: Re: Hmmmm Juno was really good
Post by: Gay Boy on December 29, 2007, 01:58:22 PM
some of it went over-board but the movie would have been damn boring with traditional dialouge.

Though in the end it was Jason Bateman's character arch that really sold me on the movie.
Title: Re: Hmmmm Juno was really good
Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 29, 2007, 03:03:01 PM
Any movie worth its salt will be viewed in good time, but I guess some folks (myself included), hate being seeing something repetitively hawked as amazing by folks with so-so credibility.  This forum tends to latch on the "hot", new thing at times and the result is usually that the thing in question is not that great.  The Departed wasn't even Scorcese's best and was pretty forgettable, outside of an awesome Jack Nicholson performance.  Little Miss Sunshine did not live up to all the hype, but was a solid, indie film.

I'll watch it for free.

Garden State has pretty much made me gun shy for indie comedy films.  Garden State was a total shit pile.  Ellen Page sucks ass too.  Cera isn't bad but he alone cannot save a movie.  I know there is a ton of Arrested Development fans that come out in force every time Cera is in a film so all the reviews are tainted to me.

That and Juno, yeah.

If you read the reviews on Superbad online, you'd think Jonah Hill never said a word in the movie.
Title: Re: Hmmmm Juno was really good
Post by: Gay Boy on December 29, 2007, 03:34:31 PM
I wouldn't call the traditional review media Michael Cera fanboys though. I mean Juno is going to get oodles of oscar nominations. Superbad is well superbad. lol. The michael cera fanboy logic really doesn't fit that.

I know oscars/critics don't mean "everything" but to credit its success amongst the old school critics and likely the academy in claiming that they are all michael cera fanboys makes little sense.

Not true.  My favorite films of all-time are usually box-office duds, critical duds or non-mainstream genre films.  I'm just not an art house sheep that's driven by a Rotten Tomatoes score on what to like!

It saddens me because X-Men 2 is one of the best super hero movies ever. Better than Spider-Man 2 imo.

Wolverine has a solid writer and director unlike X-Men 3 so I am still hopeful for the franchise.

I actually didn't mind the pop culture stuff with Bateman.  It wound up being part of his character, and not in a lazy awesome-by-association way.  By the same token, I thought Juno picking a major radio hit as a song to "educate" him on was meant to show how naive she was.

The soundtrack to the actual movie and some of the dialogue was super-precious, though.

And you don't like JK Simmons.  I'm the one who likes JK Simmons!

Xmen 3 isn't as bad as people make it out to be.  Its no where near the quality of one and two - has horrible dialog and the action is weird until the last fight but its still a solid movie.  Better than the first spiderman movie.

Yeah, she was meant to be naive about music. Like her being unaware that her version of All The Young Dudes she was playing for Bateman was a cover song that was originally by David Bowie.

All the Young Dudes was originally recorded by Mott the Hoople, dude.  It was given to them by Bowie, who produced the album, for use as a single.  Now who's naive!
