Post by: TVC15 on January 02, 2008, 01:53:43 AM: The Aviator was my first movie of 2008. It was a good choice. Howard Hughes is kind of an inspiring person, especially for someone that feels like they have their own neuroses.

The most interesting thing about watching this in close proximity to The Departed is just how superior it is. Rather than feeling like it's lengthy, it feels brisk and fast paced, despite being longer than the Departed. It's visually about 10x the movie Departed is, features great GREAT performances all around (again, unlike The Departed), it's not an inferior remake to an already great movie, and it's subject matter that youngin's today are losing familiarity with.

It has its rough spots. Kate Beckinsale is great as Ava Gardner, but her character pops in and out in just a few scenes, so the viewer doesn't really get a sense of why she is important. Cate Blanchett as Katherine Hepburn is like fucking uncanny, though; as though she is possessed. And Leo delivers another great performance. If you have ever seen video of Hughes, Leo does a fucking great job of nailing his voice and speech patterns, and some of his mannerisms.

The only other rough spot is that some people might want the movie to go on longer, to document the more notorious years of Hughes life, in Vegas and with the Mormon Mafia. Much like Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, this movie kind of ends just when the main character really goes crazy. But fret not because you do get plenty of crazy. Alec Baldwin is awesome but every time he is on screen I think 30 Rock, because here he also plays a businessy person.

So yes, The Aviator? it is one of Marty's best, whereas The Departed is not only mediocre by his standards, but flat out inferior to The Departed in every way that matters. I would almost call The Aviator brilliant. It is a beautiful movie.

Cate Blanchett was incredible (stole the movie, really) and deserved her Oscar. Speaking of .. how does "Million Dollar Baby" beat this movie for Best Picture?!

Post by: Ichirou on January 02, 2008, 02:02:19 AM: I had two problems with The Aviator (I own it on DVD, though, and I'm quite fond of the cinematography, the seamless use of CG, and how Martin Scorsese fetishizes the golden age of the movies - so much so that I wish he'd do another picture focusing on the movie business of this period and have a real director as his protagonist - someone like Vincente Minnelli, maybe). My biggest problem with the movie is the "straight biopic" nature of the movie. Maybe my expectations had been raised too high by his previous attempt at a biographical picture, Raging Bull, but the structure of The Aviator is way too by-the-numbers for me: Daring young man rises to the top of his chosen profession(s), has a hard fall, and then hunkers down and raises himself right back up again. Added to this was my second problem with the movie, which is that we don't get a real sense of Howard Hughes' internal life...how is it that he comes up with his ideas? Why does he want to be a movie mogul? Is it just the sex-with-starlets part that interests him? Why is he so passionate about flying airplanes? What made him decide to be an aviator in the first place? I wanted to get a sense of his internal life, including perhaps what it was that drove him nuts (Scorsese went with the straight OCD answer, though biographers had a buttload of other theories about why Hughes behaved the way he did).

DiCaprio's performance was great, though his voice was way too thin and reedy to be believable as an older Hughes, and he still had that babyface thing going on (which finally seems to be going away as he gets older). Cinematography, as previously stated, is gorgeous, especially the nightclub sequences, the use of the two-color process to imitate the look of early color films, etc., etc.

yeah that was my problem with the movie. it ended with like a fucking happy ending. Hughes actual life was tragic at the very least. maybe scorsese figured he couldn't have enough information to make a plot of those years of Hughes' life but he had to at least include a scene or two to show what happened. I'm guessing scorsese cut out that part of his life because he was that desperate for an oscar.

I do, but I like period pieces set in periods that don't usually get period pieces set in them, and the US from the 20s to the 40s, focusing on the things The Aviator does, is a rather unique one.

Ichirou, I had the same issue with it being a straight biopic at first, but as I was fact checking, I realized that for someone like Hughes, playing it straight gives a strong "Holy shit, this movie is pretty accurate" factor. A truth stranger than fiction thing, you know? Also, the movie makes it feel very much like the people behind the movie have a strong appreciation and respect for Hughes, and when you put his life and accomplishments up on the screen pretty clearly, it makes you realize that this part of his life, what we consider the footnote to his later craziness, is what's truly worth remembering. We remember this really ambitious person for the wrong things.

As for the second question, the truth is that he became an Aviator relatively shortly before Hell's Angels (IIRC). Like, he wasn't born into a family of flight enthusiasts. It was something he took up as a young man. He was clearly a very intelligent man when it came to the topics he loved, but he also had keen business sense, so he was able to keep himself surrounded with very smart people to help him reach his goals. That in mind, when it came to aviation shit, he really knew his stuff; that wasn't faked talent from surrounding himself with smarties. There are things on airplanes that he designed that are still in use today.

As far as getting into his motivations better, if you read much biographical information, you see different people say different things. Going crazy gives people license to make equally crazy theories about you, both before and after breakdown. I think presenting things "as is" goes along with your first point--Marty is presenting what we know about Howard. He was a playboy that loved planes and movies and he had a crazy mom and had OCD. That's enough for a great biopic :p

The movie did pretty heavily imply that he hadn't escaped his neuroses with that little bit of repeating dialogue at the end. And anybody who knows a little bit about history knows what happened to him.

It's sorta like the end of Gladiator - everyone's happy because Rome is going to become a democracy again except, uh, if you know anything about history you know that's not what happened.

I'm saying you should at the very least expect a couple scenes pasted on at the end where you see what actually happened to the guy. if it was right after the very last scene in the movie (so no transition) or even a deleted scene on the DVD, it would be fine. but it's surprising to me that scorsese didn't want to show on screen what really happened to Hughes.

It was really nice seeing him play around with casting Hollywood legends (Jude Law has that sweet little cameo as Errol Flynn).

I wouldn't say it felt like it lost steam to me. . .I liked the second half of the movie even more than the first. At the same time, I understand where you are coming from. Despite like, being fucking awesome end to end, the movie does feel like it doesn't have much focus, or theme (aside from the kinda generic and triumphing over obstacles). I don't think it really hurts the movie because I'd honestly rather have an honestish biopic when it comes to someone as iconic as Hughes. The story doesn't really need to be romanticized by having some more themes or means crammed into it.

I wish the movie didn't end. Some movies feel too long, this one I could have watched forever. Departed, well, I was checking my watch and just waiting for all the bitches to finally fucking die.

Also, the BD has a beautiful transfer. And a lot of really great special features. There is a feature on OCD, featuring a few patients that Leo worked with while preparing for the movie. There's a neat History Channel show about Howard Hughe's technical accomplishments, and maybe 4-5 production special features and 2 more on Hughes. PACKED disc.

The plane crash sequences are great...the Hollywood sequences were my favorite part of the movie but I loved the designs to all the experimental aircraft, most of which I'd never seen before. And I dug the hell out of the newsreels showing the actual scale of the Spruce Goose.

The bits of him filming Hell's Angels while hanging out of the airplanes is :o The movie really gives you a sense of awe in the flight scenes, and it's neat, because that is when Howard is closest to being in control and at peace. It's a fairly obvious device but it works so goddamned well. That crash scene is CRAZY. Someone find that online. I guarantee that people that haven't seen the movie will RUSH to see it if they see that clip.

Plus, if you want to see Kate Winslet totally naked, you can just watch Jude (based on Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure and starring Christopher Eccleston as the title character). She is so hot in that movie.

It really comes off as a self-masturbatory effort from Cameron; as if he is in awe of his technical creation for the hours and hours it is on screen and rushed to cram a mediocre love story somewhere in between all the effects to make it an actual movie.

In reality, A Night to Remember is ten times the Titanic film that Cameron's Oscar winner is.

Post by: The Fake Shemp on January 02, 2008, 03:30:53 AM: On a technical level, the film is nothing short of a landmark event in terms of visual effects meshed with extremely skilled direction (Cameron is one of the most proficient technical directors ever), and for that very reason, I cannot call it pedestrian on the whole. That said, the script and acting are pedestrian... at best. DiCaprio gives a great performance and he really had to, this was his breakthrough movie. Everyone else is acting much like the Star Wars prequel actors do, that they are in awe to work with such a touted director on such a high-profile, big budget film ("Oh my God, I'm Billy Zane and I'm working on the most expensive movie ever! This is awesome! Everyone will forget all about The Phantom!").

The film drags and drags and drags, and the romantic angle is so insipid that only its Tiger Beat-reading demographic would challenge it as high art.

Again, if you want to go see a good movie based on the Titanic incident, go rent A Night to Remember instead.

And yeah, when the ship finally sinks, like many of the visual effects in the movie, it's pretty to look at (frozen dead people!). The scale of the disaster is amazing. "Endure" is the right word for what you have to sit through to get to that point, because it really feels more like four hours instead of two and some change.

and also that Infernal Affairs kicks the shit out of The Departed. Its not that hard to out-act Andy Lau, but somehow Matt Damon, Matt Freaking Damon couldn't do it.
