Title: so should i sell my hd dvds?
Post by: Mupepe on January 05, 2008, 07:31:00 PM
buying a Sony Playstation3 Blu Ray Player (and sometimes gaming machine) on Wednesday.

I own 30 HD DVD's and from Movie Exchange I'd get about 160 dollars.

I'm sure once HD DVD really starts to die that prices are going to plummet.

EB, tell me.

couldn't you get more by short selling them on ebay?

I'd suggest you rebuy the movies you own on HD DVD which arent exclusive on Blu Ray and sell the HD-DVD's.

Yeah, but ebay is a lot of work and it seems like a bit too much trouble for me.

I'd suggest you rebuy the movies you own on HD DVD which arent exclusive on Blu Ray and sell the HD-DVD's.
so get rid of them basically?

eBay might be a bit more work, but if you get more money for them that way then it's worth it. :)

Keep the HD-DVD exclusive ones for now, until they announce the Blu ray edition.

How much do you want for Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Eternal Sunshine (damn that must look good in HD), Being John Malkovich, and the bourne films?

Separately and all together, if you don't mind.

Um  not sure  7 each or 35 together?  i have no idea if that's steep or not.

Yes, but you can keep the combo discs.

EDIT: $160? Hell, just sell them all. The exclusives will be coming to Blu-ray eventually.

I wouldn't sell them unless the clutter of an extra device bugs you, then again that device may break some time down the road.

oh it was gorgeous too.  to be honest, that was the hardest film to get rid of.  I'm going to miss a lot of the catalogue and smaller releases that were released on hd dvd.  hd dvd also had a lot of my favorite films.

I would have bought some of those from you. :(

I don't really want to get rid of my HD-DVD player, although if I sold it and all my movies I'd probably get back more than what I paid for it.

...

Can I get a link to that site?

to what site?  the place i sold it to?  It's just a store here in Houston

When I took them in last night he said a lot of people had been trading in hd dvd's yesterday, so the market is most likely going to drop pretty fast on this.

I'm keeping mine (I only have 6).  I'll probably buy a PS3 at $299 if there is a price drop this year.  Until then my HDA1 (<3) will continue to be my primary player.  It upscales extremely well and I watch 10 DVDs to every high definition disc.

I am keeping mine and using it at a dvd player. All but 2 of my hd-dvd's are combo disks so I kind of lucked out. When blu-ray players are $150 or cheaper I'll rejoin the HD world.

Is it going to be region free?  That is my favorite movie and it was a little painful to sell

Auction them off. It would be a cool way to advertise Mupepe.com

Post the ads at Cheapassgamers.com or something

Mupepe, Japan and North America share the same Blu-ray region.  You can play Japanese blurays on your American PS3.

Screw it then, I'll keep mine. I didn't even have a DVD player before I bought this. I only have 13 HD-DVDs and 10 of them were free.

I'm keeping mine (got 30-plus disks). I actually have TWO HD-DVD players now, one of which doubles as a HD DVR, plus the 360  add-on. One is in the living room, the other is in my game room. I'll keep using the 360 add-on for DVDs and stuff anyway.

The logic here is that re-buying this stuff on Blu-Ray is not going to make it look better, just cost more, and that Blu-Ray isn't going to be around forever either. HD-DVDs will continue to look and sound awesome and I'll get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of them. In 10 years, we'll all be making 'oh god MY EYES' jokes about Blu-Ray too, and raving about the new 10TB Blade Runner Ultimate Edition download on iTunes.

To be honest, i'm more pissed at the shelf space lost to DVDs. HD-DVDs won't be 'obsolete' in terms of video quality for quite a few years at least; DVD was sub-standard from the get-go. It's looking like a PS3 purchase is in my near future though, which kind of sucks 'cause i'm all out of space to put it and it doesn't do a damn thing that the 360 doesn't. Other than cure cancer.
