Title: PS3 needs a better space manager/clean up system
Post by: dcharlie on January 07, 2008, 07:38:50 AM
Did i say 20gig wouldn't last long with installs? My PS3 just told me it couldn't download Ryu Ga Gotuku because it was out of space.

I was surprised until i looked at all the game installs!

2.8 gig for Genji 2
5 gig for Ridge
2.4 gig for VF5
2 gig for heavenly sword
3.3 gig for Ninja Gaiden
etc....

i just want a better way to clear this stuff down - but man, stop installing all this shit on my drive OR give me a tool that makes it better than going through everything one at a time and having to delete them.
The X360 is no better either (but AT LEAST retail games don't throw down 2-5 (!) gig installs on your ass - lol, because it can't because MS threw away the best thing about the Xbox (standard HDD))

Actually, 360 is better since you can find all data in one place

System Blade --> Memory  --> HDD

In fairness, Sony couldn't have envisioned that anyone would install Genji 2.

Yeah.  I got a 60 and might upgrade to a 180.  By the time this gen is over one could imagine all the installed games you PS3 HDD will have.

Go buy a new HD!  I got a 160gb drive last summer for around 10,000 yen.  That was the whole reason I got a 20gb at launch, too...end up spending the same amount of cash as a 60gb but get an extra 100gb of space.  :)

I have a 160 GB HDD in mine and have never had to delete anything - but if its like the music and video file management you should be able to press triangle and select delete multiple.

in this mode you can select as many files as you like for deletion and then kill them all in a batch.

The max size right now for PS3 HDD's is 250 GB I believe

is it a sata or ide drive? i'm tempted to drop a 7200 rpm 160gb 2.5" sata in.

sata

5400 rpm models are the best to keep the heat down.

bobobobobo reduced install/load times

I'm just paranoid with hardware this gen.  Though PS3s appear solid, I'll probably upgrade to a 5400 rpm just to be safe.  I'm paranoid like that.

i got a 20gb too and have run out of space a few times due to hdd installs.  guess i should upgrade the drive soon.

my reason for getting the 20?  lack of chrome.

iirc, 7200 rpm won't do shit with the ps3 for some reason.

and it generates more heat, so yeah, go for 5400.

really? how does that work? i can't imagine how load times WOULDN'T improve with a 7200 unless there's some weird-ass async shit in the file management subsystem

here, it is faster by like 3 sec, if that is worth it to you, go for it.

i delete demos after having ceased to play them instead of letting them linger on the HDD
