Title: UMD totally owned
Post by: abrader on January 07, 2008, 09:29:50 PM
PS3 to let you rip PSP portable versions of Blu Ray movies so you can watch on the go....

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/843/843979p1.html?RSSwhen2008-01-07_162900&RSSid=843979

This is only the beginning and supports earlier rumors of the PS3 also being able to rip PSOne and PS2 games to the PS3 HDD.

Now with blu ray you get a good formatted portable version of the flikk for play on your Spod.

well it probably rips a lower quality version right? Cause high def on such a small screen probably looks horrible and you could only get one movie on an 8 gig sd card right?

The maximum PSP screen resolution is only like 480x272 or something, plus I doubt the PSP's processor could decode HD video, so yeah. Even if it was full 1080p, it's not like you're notice it on a screen that small.

It's probably just going to be a PSP-sized version already on the disc, and that's what you'll transfer to the PS3.  I believe that's how they did it on the Die Hard 4 DVD set.  Ripping and converting a Blu Ray to the PS3 hard drive would take forever.

erm... with an "enhanced" PSP you can do this NOW.

and yes, it's hotter than the sun.

As I understand it, PSOne emulation on the PSP is far from perfect.

I have never played any of the games you just mentioned.

i have seen zero issues -- but i have seen load time IMPROVEMENTS -- with the following games: alundra, r-type delta, persona 2, dragon warrior 7, grandia, r-types and omega boost.

It's not ripping the blu ray movie...

Don't know if this has been posted, but the way this works is only on selected movies where there is a PSP-encoded .mp4 file included on the disc that you can just copy over to the PSP memory stick. Sony has been doing this for a while with their "special" PSP memory sticks that include a code to download Ghost Rider, Stealth, or some other shitty movie onto your PSP.

in short it's:

The PS3 isn't doing the conversion. The PSP video file is on the disc, you just copy it over to your PSP.

fegs, ruining a movie topic with gaming discussion.

Anyway, this is fucking awesome news and I hope this becomes standard for Blu.

It's even better that it's an mp4 file right?  Wouldn't that mean you can play it on your ipod as well as psp?
