Title: Flamebait! 'Dynamic' Difficulty in Fighting Games
Post by: disgruntled_jojo on January 08, 2008, 10:40:03 PM
Question: does anyone else hate it when you're playing a fighting game at home, getting pummelled by a computer opponent, fighting them again and again, steadily improving, and then the floor drops out of the difficulty curve?  This happens in several games, but the one that always upset me the most was Capcom vs SNK 2.  If you die against an opponent and continue more than a couple of times, the computer automatically defaults them to a sub-1 star difficulty level (where you can literally walk up and throw them repeatedly until they die).  I brought this up on a forum once before, a couple years ago, and everyone flamed the hell out of me for saying that it should at least be an option you can turn off.  They made the argument that it's part of the game (I see it's role in the coin-op arcade space) and that I should just 'deal with it'.

So, I'm curious as to your opinions: does this frustrate the shit out of you (because you are like me, and realize the only way to improve is to keep fighting the AI at it's full difficulty until you find its weakness), or do you breathe a sigh of relief and move on to the next opponent with a smile on your face (you damn wuss)?

p.s. this would have been a poll but I am teh junier membar  :'( one day!

:lol

I haven't encountered this before. I got my ass kicked over 20 times by Sarah and then Akira yesterday in VF5's arcade mode. Then that bitch Dural destroyed me. How the hell do I get better at this game? :(

I've only tried arcade mode with Pai so far. I mainly used Sarah in VS. mode against my friends.

Who are some good beginner characters?

Pai is the best beginning character, along with Lau. Eileen is really good too. Sarah and Jacky are pretty good for beginniners I'd think.

I think I'm just gonna stick with Sarah for now. She's the easiest for me to use so far and I've always liked characters that mainly fight with their feet.

I've been using Sarah too, but getting my ass kicked left and right when playing in the arcades or online.  A lot of players of similar rank seem to be using mainly Lau and Jacky, I find.

I prefer the SNK method where they fuck you till you love them.

I just beat arcade mode with Sarah (except for Dural, but that's a given). It was still difficult, but much easier than when I tried with Pai.
