best 360 game this side of chromehounds. i would've lined up to pay $60 for this.

i need to find a controller with a decent d-pad, though -- analog stick doesn't feel right, and the stock 360 d-pad is horrible

yeah, hori looks good but no wireless  :gloomy

btw, you can do it with a screwdriver too, here are the instructions: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5836904&postcount=182

old thread and pics ain't working but still, shouldn't be hard and you don't have to take the controller apart.

within an hour's drive the Best Buy stores only have:

1) Xbox 360 Arcade
2) Xbox 360 Halo Edition

Neither is, uh, a real choice.

i was all set to do that mod, but it turns out you need a 'torx t8h' screwdriver to open a wireless pad. even a regular torx screwdriver won't do -- i think i bought one to open up an snes cart or something. and i don't know about doing it the lazy gaf way. if i'm going to spend money on this, i may as well go for the hori pad

lol 360 -- it gets its best game in ages and the whole thread is about hardware issues

how much are Hori pads? I was thinking of picking one up as I only have one pad for my 360, I'll probably snag one off play-asia when I buy the No More Heroes soundtrack and AWDS2 omg

thats gonna be 1 x sexy package
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: drohne on January 09, 2008, 08:40:54 PM
play asia hasn't got them in stock. i ordered one from japanvideogames.com for about $30 -- but i think you're in new zealand or something, and i don't know how much shipping would be
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: The Sceneman on January 09, 2008, 09:10:23 PM
shipping from asia is never too bad, as NZ is fairly close, I buy from play-asia all the time and shipping is only a couple of bucks

I WANT to buy an arcade stick, but I can't find them anywhere... maybe I'll have more luck now the VF stick is out, but that DOA stick is impossible to find :(

Besides, you're not going to be playing Omega Five with an arcade stick because it uses dual analogue, like GW and MS.

whhhhaaaaaaaat then why were we talking about crappy d-pads
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: drohne on January 10, 2008, 01:46:12 AM
moving with the analog stick feels off to me. even the shitty 360 d-pad is an improvement.

this game is crack.  i was finally able to 1-credit with ruby.  i tried with tempest and died on the 3rd stage boss.   :'(

i started off playing with tempest and when i switched to ruby i was like omgwtfbbq, she kicks ass.  but the bullet reflect system on tempest is ace, that shit has gotten me out of so many sticky situations.

I really liked the demo, but I'm no pro at this genre. Will I be able to enjoy the game, or is it going to beat the shit out of me later on and make it a waste?
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: hyp on January 10, 2008, 01:55:43 PM
you'll be able to enjoy it as long as you put some time into it.  if you just want a pick up and play experience, don't even bother.  you may get frustrated early on.  it took me a while to beat the game on the initial 3 credits it offers.   you unlock more credits once you hit the hour mark i think.  and when you complete the game with certain characters your credits get boosted to 8.

but if you want to 1-credit this bitch, it takes a lot of memorization of patterns with a bit of strategy thrown in.  getting high scores is a skill in itself.

Great XBLA game but holy shit is it ever tough.  I'm getting my ass handed to me in the second level.

I just wish it had Forgotten World's power-up system where you could buy upgrades and such in the shop.  Of course if it did that then I guess it really would be Forgotten Worlds 2.....nothing wrong with that though.

Got the 30 second combo achievement too in that run

It took me 4 or 5 tries to beat the stage 2 boss though, and I used all my lives doing it. (once in the level, once in the boss, then the last one a short way into stage 3).

What's your gamertag? I wanna see if you beat my score. I'm also about a million short of hyp's, but I got that much without beating the third level boss. I can't figure out how to beat it without using the bombs. Too much shit is falling and I can't dodge them all while Booby's secondary weapon is attached to the boss. I'll probably be able to take enough hits without dying if I get up to the boss with full energy.

my gamertag is 'drohne'

the third boss is actually pretty easy once you work out the pattern -- if you're having trouble with that spinny form, you just need to make sure you cross to the bottom half of the screen

The only shooter I've ever 1cced was Gradius 1 on PSP. For being one of my favorite genres in all of gamedom, I am not that great at them :( Was about to 1cc Blazing Lazers on my Duo, but the last level suddenly ramped up insanely in difficulty, I died once, lost all my weapons and was stuck in a loop where it was nearly impossible to power up again... eventually lost all my lives at that part and never even got to finish the game :(
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: drohne on January 24, 2008, 03:11:29 AM
damn:

a. i've started playing with the intention to score, and it's much deeper than i suspected -- i think it must be possible to keep a chain going through the whole of level 1, though there are a few spots i haven't figured out. and by extension, i bet it's possible to keep a chain going through the whole game, bosses excepted

b. arcade++ mode is where it's at as far as scoring goes. i just scored 4.5 mil, and i only got as far as the beginning of stage 2. it can be frustrating since one hit kills you, but it replaces the 10x multiplier with a 30x multiplier. and actually the game is a lot more exciting without that big cushy margin for error.

I hurt my hand while trying to do this earlier today. It is possible, but I'm too anxious to destroy everything as soon as they appear on screen. I managed to chain all of the first half and on another try I managed to chain all of the second half, but I can't chain them together. :maf

I'm not even gonna attempt this with the second level.

alright, o5 nub question

what is ruby's anchor useful for outside of destroying some bullets and locking on yer fire?
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: drohne on January 24, 2008, 05:16:39 PM
it also does some extra damage. and with those midbosses on level 3, you can keep the anchor locked onto their weakpoints and doing damage even when they've rotated away from your fire -- makes them go down much quicker.

I can't play this fucking game when anyone is awake in my house! I was near the end of level 3 and I already broke my previous record when my nephew pushes my door open and runs past my TV, my sister in law sticks her baby in my face, and my mother stands in front of my TV. Shit man...

Wow, stage 4 bucked my futt in no time flat.

I can get through stage 1 and 2 without dying. I can get through stage 3 without dying most of the time, but I can't beat the boss without dying. My first go at stage 4 didn't go too smoothly.

I should be at 8 credits soon lol

edit: Oh sweet I just got them, I will definitely beat the game on my next go (Ruby)

What's the best gun for the third boss? I was using Tybe B and it was pretty hard to shoot his little asshole and get through the debris as well, especially when he's on the bottom.
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: hyp on January 25, 2008, 11:46:44 PM
if you're using ruby, i say go with type A - level 3 for the third boss.  it's got greater firepower and the spread is decent.

When the anus is on the bottom of the screen, do you switch between shooting it and the junk falling down, or just do your best to dodge the junk while continually shooting it?

So I just realized that the game only counts the score of the last life you had? Is that correct? Fuck. I had over 2 million on my first life. I shouldn't have continued. Finally got to stage 4, though. So awesome.
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: CajoleJuice on January 27, 2008, 03:48:16 AM
Wooo, my credits just got extended to 5. I'll be able to beat the game finally! Although, I would've been able to beat this with 2 credits soon enough.

It took me until I got unlimited continues in Ikaruga to beat that game. :lol And that was like after 8 hours of play. Apparently, I've only played this for 60 minutes.

5.8 mil. and i can't BELIEVE the stupid way i died -- i looked over at my score and ran into the leftover stalk from one of those green bullet spherey things in level 2. i had a 30x multiplier going, and probably could've added another million points without running into anything difficult. :'(
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: The Sceneman on January 27, 2008, 05:00:30 AM
wtf 30x multiplier?  :o I thought it maxed at 10x?

and i hate those things In level 2, I wish they had a proper name
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5

arcade++ mode replaces the 10x multiplier with a 30x multiplier -- though the tradeoff is that one hit kills you

I had the same concern, but it's totally playable even for a non-shmup-nut and you unlock extra lives the more you play. Play 5 hours and you have infinite lives. You will beat it.

Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5

The two top people both scored over 20 million. I'm pretty sure that they did that by playing on arcade++ and chaining every level.

I'm sure that I can get into the top 50 if I keep playing. Not getting hit on the 2nd level is my main problem. The 3rd level is easy.
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5

fuck I need tips for the lvl 3 boss, how do you unlock those replays hyp was talking about?
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: drohne on January 28, 2008, 07:47:01 PM
you can watch replays from the challenge mode leaderboards

anyway, i finished off the achievements last night, and bumped my score to around 7 mil, though i was never able to combine a good level 1 run with a good level 2 run. maybe i'll make some headway tonight.
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5

thanks man

I dont think I'll ever be able to match you guys in terms of score  :'( Im not that sweet at sh'mups. If I ever get 200/200 I'll be happy
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: Beezy on January 28, 2008, 08:04:47 PM
I've never been great at shmups either. Omega 5 just isn't that hard compared to the others.

If I keep playing this day after day like I've been doing for the past week, I'm sure that eventually I'll be able to score over 10 mil on arcade++.
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: CajoleJuice on January 28, 2008, 09:26:43 PM
It's just a matter of playtime, Scenester. You'll get better. Omega 5 is no Ikaruga in terms of difficulty. (Yea, I haven't played many shmups at all)

yeah, omega five doesn't require much twitch skill -- it's more a matter of strategy and concentration. if you stick with it, you'll get good at it.

I'll hopefully 1cc this bitch tomorrow
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: AdmiralViscen on January 31, 2008, 01:10:06 PM
Beat it. Had 8 credits but only died twice. Plus a suicide in the last boss fight so I could switch to Tempest for the deathblow.

The first time I got to stage 3 I did it with dying, but every time after that I die sometime in the course of stage 2 for some reason. I think I could definitely one-credit it if I stopped trying to kill the snake's head.

Is there any particular strategy to killing those blue flying guys in stage 2 (the ones in clusters?)?

Is there ever a reason to use Ruby's Type C?
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: drohne on January 31, 2008, 01:18:14 PM
i don't think there's any special strategy for the blue flying things. and i think the only point of ruby's type c is ease of chaining -- its low power and inability to ricochet can be benefits there -- but even so i prefer type b

anyway, i'm at like 9.6 million, and i've been stuck in that range for days. if i could just put together all the individual things i'm capable of doing in level 2, my score should be at 11+ million, but there are so many ways to screw up, and going through level 1 again is such a frustration.

Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5

15 or so. which is kind of crazy, since i've yet to beat level 2 in ++ mode, and my level 1 score is a couple million points short of optimal. maybe the best players are on the challenge leaderboards.

whats the best weapon to use with Tempest? I also cant figure out how this bullet deflection thing works  :'(
Title: Re: hot hot hot omega 5
Post by: AdmiralViscen on February 01, 2008, 09:23:35 PM
-Constantly fire
-When firing, bullets that get near you slow and turn green
-Release fire
-Continue firing and green bullets will fly out at enemies

about 2/3 the way through stage 1, you'll find two of those big spider things (that shoot missles and stuff) one above you on the roof and one below you. Basically position your ass between them (while firing through the gap between them so u can catch bullets), wait for them to unload their salvos (they both fire at the same time) you'll be in a prime position to catch them all, bam achievement

heres a youtube video
