Title: Fellow Japafags, sad news. Newtype USA is dead.
Post by: Ichirou on January 10, 2008, 10:51:34 PM
February issue will be their last.

I dug their DVDs, though I think I stopped buying the magazine back in 2003.

I have no clue what you're talking about.  Like I said in the OP, I haven't read an anime-related magazine since 2003.  And I've never seen Afro Samurai.

I think play magazine has a section on anime and shit

I think the only reason I remember this is because I read one just to see how much it sucks

Newtype USA was pretty good in terms of images and shit, gave you a good vibe as to what a show was like.  Plus, the DVDs had free episodes of anime, it was good if you wanted to find out what a show was about.

Nope. According to ANN and the main site it's free. Theres one given out at Cons and another one which is the standard format thats released "Quarterly" for free at Borders, Waldenbooks and Best Buy.

Hahahah wow I used to be into Animerica at the height of my japafag phase and then Newtype came out and it was the best thing ever, and then I turned 16.

ADV shows tend to be fucking cheap on DVD.

Dai-Guard, 26 episode TV show which is really good...only ten bucks thanks to a sale on ADV's website.

Everyone go read the entries on Wapanese and Otaku on Encyclopedia Dramatica if you haven't already.  The site can be NSFW depending on the entry, though.

Sounds a lot like Otaku USA

Is that seriously the name of an anime magazine?   :S

the only anime magazine i ever found to be worth reading is Protoculture Addicts.

They're the people who told me about Evangelion and porco rosso and such before the internet.

Chris Johnston, former EGM news editor and Newtype USA senior editor, left recently.  I guess he saw the writing on the wall.  The problem with Newtype was that it was hyper-niche and expensive to produce.

Didn't magweasel work for Newtype?  :-\

Yes.  Kevin Gifford.  I believe so.  Hopefully, he was something else lined up.
