I like anime feature films because they dont feel that shameful kind of way most modern anime do. Im talkin about all that fanservice bullshit. They usually try to cover adult subject matter with earnest feeling and style and BUDGET rite?
Well I just watched Metropolis again for the 4th time and I just gotta say, it is hands down my favorite japanese animated film. I mean its like Metropolis meets BLADE RUNNER meets...I dunno something else awesome.

(awesome)
If you havent seen this movie it is a must. It is a musical visual treat that gracefully blends a strong story, cool 3D visuals, awesome 2D animation and a great original soundtrack supported by a classic song.
Now for the worst anime movie. Its about balls. Raccoon Balls to be exact.
See those? They get bigger. They actually inflate them to serve as parachutes, war-boats, they crush humans with them, all in a very long winded battle for the environment. It also has something to do with the disappearing culture in japan to modern conventions but again, the balls:

I mean I guess my main issue is that this is supposedly a kids movie. Imagine now, being a young man in japan influenced by this show. You get to the top of your house, grab your nut sack and jump off the roof as you attempt to glide safely to the ground by yanking on your balls as hard as you fucking can...and you die anyway.
I mean thats just horrible. Whats worse is (yes I will spoil this movie) they end up losing anyway so the three goddamned hours of raccoon balls is for fucking NOTHING.

Pom Poko is worse than an Uwe Boll movie.
-
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Thats about all I've seen movie wise. WATCH THEM.

Metropolis has such a wonderful style that captures the early days of anime but weds it to modern production values. It's a really heartfelt picture.
I like the Miyazaki hardcore adventure flicks, too -- Laputa and Nausicaa in particular.
-
I haven't watched a lot of anime, but I liked Ninja Scroll (does that count as a Movie?) and the Cowboy Bebop movie a lot.
-
Kiki's delivery service i dont know i havent seen many good anime movies.
-
Totoro is the best anime.
And this:

Ghost In The Shell
Texhnolyze
don't watch that much anime movies. Make good non-kiddy recommendations please!
edit: oh I didn't recommend a worst. Dragon Ball Z.
-
Oh, Wicked City is okay. It made me laugh.
-
Totoro is a badass :gun
I'm also fond of Princess Mononoke.
-
I liked Mononoke overall, but I found it a little preachy and a bit off in terms of pacing. Spirited Away was good, but Howl's Moving Castle was just godawful.
-
Saw Metropolis in the theatres. Loved the soundtrack and the visuals, couldn't really get into the story. Hey! I could just copy and paste that for 90% of the anime I've seen.
I really liked Castle of Cagliostro. I dig Miyazaki, but dig him more when he's tied down to a more conventional narrative. Haven't seen either of the two Drinky cited.
-
WHAT THE FUCK TVC?!??!?!?!?
Metropolis was awesome cause it wasnt afraid to blow a robots goddamned brains out in front of kids.

The only two things I could stand watching were something called Gundam Seed (even though it still had its totally gay gayified moments, and for the first few episodes I kept trying to convince Denise that the main character was a woman), and a movie called Princess Mononoke. Wasn't too bad! Although anime has its own unique style that I just can't seem to stand for more than a short period of time.
She showed me that evangelion show and I just couldn't get into it. I got really set off when the guy found some girl naked in her room, she wasn't startled, and his eyes lit up like christmas. That whole sissy girly boy with a tough confident incredible woman thing is just such a terrible situation that's so fucking annoying to me.
-
I like: Monoke, Tottoro, Naussica, Castles in the Sky, Akira, Wings of Honnemaise, Grave of the Fireflies.
Certain Suckitude: Pom Poko. W T F
Non-feature film reommendation: Paranoia Agent. Creative, parodies anime and it's culture, and deals alot with the denial, guilt and how people deal with their guilt. Private self vs Public Self, the business of anime, the pressure of Japanese culture to succeed and lots of real things. It is not for those who want big epic mega battles and super powers.
-
Evangelion is good but not really uplifting. Actually its really depressing lol.
-
What's your opinion on Howl's Moving Castle? I saw it a week ago or so. It starts off really good, but as the movie goes on it really wanes. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did. The ending did not satisfy me either; it certainly didn't justify the movie's length.
That being said, there were many funny parts, and many cool characters. But Howl came off as a giant pussy to me.
7/10
-
Never saw it, heard it was bad so I avoided it. After Pom Poko I am EXTREMELY wary of anime movies
-
Howl's Moving Castle isn't bad, but it feels too much like a conglemerate of various ghibli films. It was sort of a letdown, but not painful like Pom Poko.
-
I couldn't fuckin' follow Howl's Moving Castle, and the ending was total nonsense.
-
KARAS is worse actually, than Pom Poko
-
Vampire Wars is another bad one, but most people never saw that one. I just bought it during my 'vampires are cool' phase.
-
Haha
Read the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley. Vampires will be cool again.
-
Follow my anime suggestions and you will go far:
Mind Game
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
Grave of the Fireflies
Princess Mononoke
-
seen 2 of those, havent seen grave cause omg depressing
-
What is Grave of the Fireflies about? Does actually do anything graphic or depressing plot-wise?
-
Grave is the only worthwhile anime movie I've ever watched. I still wouldn't mind checking out the NGE movie sometime. The series was pretty good up until the last few episodes.
-
WTF ARE YOU DOING MAF?
Go rent AKIRA already! You havent even seen it? Its been out since 1988 man, its a fucking classic.
-
tripping: When you get to the last two episodes, rent End of Evangelion and watch that instead lol.
-
the best anime ever is Hand Maid May
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jX3T2ywJHVE
I cried :'(
Perfect Blue gets an honorable mention
http://imdb.com/title/tt0156887/
-
Heh, I was about to suggest Metropolis. I wouldn't class it as anime though, if only because the quality of other titles in the genre make that label a little insulting. Stylistically it's pretty different from what i would define as anime too.
I also concur with Mandark on Castle of Caligostro and with Drinky on Howl's Moving Castle.
-
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Thats about all I've seen movie wise. WATCH THEM.
QFT
I'm proud to say Ghost in the Shell is my favorite animated film, ever.
-
The 3 Patlabor movies are great!

:D

Polari: Nice to see some Metropolis love anyway, it gets written off so fast for some reason :(
-
seen 2 of those, havent seen grave cause omg depressing
Hahaha. I know the feeling and it really is that depressing. One of the few movies to make me cry. But even so, I highly suggest it. It is a beautiful flick. Check out Mind Game though. It's not out here, but you can download it, and I definitely suggest you do as it is by far the best animated movie in the 21st century...although, that's not saying much because these days animated movies suck ass. Oh, how the mighty hath fallen.
Also, like Mupepe said, check out Perfect Blue and practically anything Satoshi Kon, which included Millenium Actress and Perfect Blue.
Another great movie is Otaku no Video, which is a both an anime and psycho analystic like study of otaku/obsession culture in general. Extremely well directed film and highly suggested.
Ovas are a great choice too. They give movie like quality but with episodic intervals. In fact, they're my favorite form of anime. The highest anime recommendation I can give you is Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin): Trust and Betrayel Directors Cut dvd. That has been my favorite anime since I saw about 7 years ago (goddamn...) and no anime has literally WOWED me since. 4 episodes long, and it is utterly amazing. WATCH IT.
Other ovas:
FLCL - netflix this one haha. 3 dvds with 2 ep per disc if you buy)
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket - FUCKING CLASSIC I TELL YOU.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 - AWWW YEAH
Blue Submarine 06 - Great anime
Macross Plus - One of, if not the, best mecha anime of all time.
Irresponsible Captain Tayler - Mix of sci-fi with comedy. Awesome.
-
ARGH you didnt recommend 08th MS team? :(
-
HOW COULD I FORGET
FUCK ME IN THE ASS I have failed :'( :'( :'(
-
YOU HAVE FAILED US! ABANDON FORUM!

btw
because this thread says worse...DO NO WATCH VAMPIRE HUNTER D BLOODLUST. I EXPECTED GOOD THINGS AND IT WAS TERRIBLE.
Don't watch Blood the Last Vampire either. Wasted potential! :(
What about Jin-Roh? lol
-
I found Mind Game to be incredibly disappointing.
Keeping the discussion to movies: nothing is better than Millenium Actress. It's like 50 good movies packed into 1.
