I tried to find the old character design of Zidane where his face looks exactly like David Bowie before they changed it. I did not find it but I did find a good example of the differences between US and Japanese cosplay.

Kuja was a pretty blatant ripoff of homage to David Bowie in Labyrinth

I bought a couple Final Fantasy trading arts figures while I was in Japan, and I got Zidane. He's rocking out on a bookshelf in my office.

Zidane is one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters as well. I know it's not very popular, but I love Nomura's rendition of the character:
