I was doing my grocery shopping the other day, passing the cereal aisle, and I noticed that most of the kid's cereals are bereft of toys. Growing up in the 80s, I used to love the clever little knick-knacks stuffed in my breakfast cereal. What happened to these things? My favorites were the rubberized octopi found in Kellogg's line of kid's cereal.

The same thing that happened to every other cool thing from the 80's: it will be remade and suck horribly, yet some misguided forum poster named "Willco" will still like it.

Those things would be highly praised as collectors items if they made videogame or anime toys/figures now.
That said, cereals became big enough to sell on it's own without relying on toys as a selling point these days.

They don't have toys in cereal anymore?! It must suck ass being a kid these days! They don't even get awesome cartoons on Saturdays!

They sometimes offer promotions via mailing in upc codes, but there's no toy in the cereal boxes from what I've seen grocery shopping.

This is probably true. I'm all for cereal companies killing off stupid children. Herbert Spencer should have started up a cereal company.
