My moms computer has a virus and nothing will open on her computer. she can't log into her email accounts, search for anything and none of the programs on the start menu will open up. She ran Verizon's virus remover and nothing worked, any ideas?
-
Sure its a virus?
-
Open task manager and take a look at the active processes, see if anything looks suspicious
-
still not sure its a virus, how old is the computer, how long has it been on factory install, how much does your mom do on it
-
press windows key + r
type in msconfig, press enter
tab over to startup, then take a screenshot
paste into paint
upload to xs.to
post it here
-
my moms pc on factory install got crazy cluttered, had to gut a lot of it out and defrag the thing.
-

wtf is napster tho, thought that died years ago, oh nmv they became legal lol
-
Dunno try restarting into safe mode and using spyware software I guess
defrag always helps
maf could be right, that looks a bit cluttered, my laptop only has 4 startup items
then again i just installed this OS yesterday
-
on a second look
some reports of msmsgs being a virus are on this page
http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/msmsgs.exe.html
yeah disable it from startup, could be bad, scan it with virus scanner
-
to stop it from running at startup, just uncheck it in msconfig there and press ok
it might come back
the comments on that site say it could be a harmless msn messenger file or a trojan, very conflicted
id be safe and delete the file (the file path is also on msconfig)
if msn messenger stops working, reinstall it
IMO no need to format the hdd, just run Spybot search and destroy ( http://www.safer-networking.org/ ) in safe mode or something
avg is a decent free anti virus http://free.grisoft.com/

I think he's having trouble downloading files tho :(
Course he could dl it on another pc and keydrive it to her desktop
-
true, might have to use another comp to get the files
try and see if you can download files in safe mode w/networking
