Title: Rock Band is beginning to make a believer out of me...
Post by: The Fake Shemp on January 18, 2008, 12:17:15 AM
My next door neighbor has it and I recently setup a demo station in my own store. I hadn't played it before and well, I find it kind of addicting.  But I know better - the hardware is crap and I don't feel like sending bits and pieces of guitar and what have you back and forth to Electronic Arts.  I kind of want it, but I know I shouldn't...

This has been me since I played it on Festivus...

I hadn't felt this way since I burnt out on Guitar Hero II on the Xbox 360.  Guitar Hero III was an easy non-buy for me, as it just doesn't have whatever I loved about Guitar Hero II.  Rock Band sure does, though.  Those drums rock too.

Also, the whole setup would look awfully tacky in my living room.

Anyone know if the PS3 stuff is more or less solid?  Maybe I'll wait it out 'till a price drop kicks the used units in the sub-300 range and I can use my employee discount on one.

Game rules. My shit HAS broken. They express ship you a new guitar. It's really no hassle other than the 125 dollar hold they put on your account. It's still kind of annoying I guess.

Drums are still in good shape though.

Is your replacement guitar holding up?  I never purchased GH2 on 360, picked up the PS2 version since I had the guitar, so I really want to go with just the strat.  I don't want to have 3 guitars laying around.  I'm a sucker for Oasis, itching to pull the trigger on the bundle.

I haven't used it as much, but it's been okay. I think I prefer the GH2/3 guitar tbh. I like the RB guitar for regular strumming and ho/po (the buttons being flush up against each other is nice)...it is just more comfortable. But for really fast note sections, I use the clicks of the GH guitar to keep my timing and it's not there for the RB guitar.

So it doesn't click when you strum down on the strat, I didn't know that.  That kind of sucks.  I guess I can always pick up RB and purchase a standalone GH guitar if I'm not feeling the strat.  Thanks for the info.

I love Rock Band. The amount of fun my wife and I have doing World Tour Mode together and my friends and I performing as Spicy Vag-hat is some of the most fun I've had in a videogame in a long long time. I've never played Guitar Hero, though.

Also, my Stratocaster is solid. Still going strong.

Game rules. My shit hasn't broken.

Neither has my guitar, and I have easily put more than 20 hours into it.  I am paranoid about it because everyone says ALL FIRST BATCH GUITARS ARE DEFECTIVE, yet mine is still kickin.

I hate the spongy strummer, though.  I want the clicky GH one.

I've come to prefer it.

I'd like it, except I miss strums because of it.  It's difficult to tell when a click is registering without the sound coming from the guitar.  During fast strums, I miss hits because of it.

I'm on my second strat, the replacement seems to work very well.

I haven't used a GH guitar before, but I can see where the tactile feedback and sound of the strum would help vs the soft strum the strat uses.  I think a perfect guitar would be the strat's fretboard and the strum of a GH guitar.

I'll probably pick up GH III with the Les Paul and the GH II disc I'm enjoying Rock Band so much.  It's going to suck playing some of those songs and not being able to sing/drum though.  GH IV needs to have drums and singing as well, if they are going to split songs it will be bullshit if I can't sing G N R songs.

Well, I could never do fast strums :lol But I do them better on the RB guitar somehow.

I sort of hate fast strumming to begin with, especially after playing the Muse song in GH3.

The Strat's strum bar doesn't need a lot of movement to register a "click", at least if you have a good one, so I just grab hold of it with my index finger and thumb and lightly strum it for the fast portions.  Works pretty well.

I started hard last night.  I dunno.  I wish it would be patterns of roughly similar complexity to normal, except including the fifth fret.  As it is, the pattern difficult takes a bump up, and the fifth fret is added.  That's just too much difficulty added at once for me.  Why can't they just have a Normal 4 Fret and a Normal 5 Fret mode?  I really want to play with 5 frets :(
Title: Re: Rock Band is beginning to make a believer out of me...
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on January 18, 2008, 05:32:07 PM
you'll learn to love the 5th fret

my advice is:

SHIFT. shift. shift your hand. shift it.

second, DON'T think of 1-2-3-4 as the base position and 2-3-4-5 as the "shift" position. 2-3-4-5 is very often a more common basis for songs, with you shifting BACK to hit the 1 instead of FORWARD to hit the 5

also shift.

I started hard this week, I've completed 8 songs so far. It's really hard, but I'm doing my best to SHIFT!

This is going to sound x-gay, but I kinda regret getting the PS3 version because if I am putting so much effort into the game, I want my achievements.

I'll get another guitar as soon as they go ons ale. But for now, a friend of mine bought the PS2 version, so he brings over his guitar when we all get together.

Nice. I didn't know the PS2 guitar worked with PS3, I thought the adapters were shitty. That's cool that you can do that.

Considering how many 360s melted in the xmas season, probably made the right choice.  PS3 for your 'heavy play' games, save your 360 for the games where you have to have it.  Unless you like long stretches with no console.

Oh come on, I have stated several times that I plan on getting myself an HDMI 360 when my current one dies (which looks to be soon).  I will see if I can't make a deal, but this will probably mean buying the cheapest available SKU on the market with HDMI.

the HDMI port is placed such that you can't put the Component out (with optical out plug) and an HDMI cable in at the same time.

so you have to buy a $50 adapter from MS that allows you to optical out from the general multi A/V plug while HDMI out from the HDMI port
