Title: What was your favorite non-FF Square game of the 32-bit generation?
Post by: Ichirou on January 19, 2008, 09:06:24 AM
I'm in a Square mood lately, since I'm playing Final Fantasy Tactics.

It's too bad the second one was such a disappointment. :(

I'd probably go with Vagrant Story, SaGa Frontier 2, or (gasp) Xenogears.

there are only two potential responses here: 'einhander' and 'i'm a cigarillo'

and also i guess 'both of the above'

but EINHANDER

For as much as we all talk shit about Square, there seems to be quite the number of threads about them here.

I think for me it would be Legend of Mana with Bushido Blade as a close second. Even though I'm sure it doesn't hold up well today, I did have countless hours of fun playing this with friends. Probably one of the very few 3d fighters from that era which I liked. Legend of Mana , to me, was a very unique experiment. I loved how you got to define the world and how it affected the way you progressed through the game. The music was like ecstasy for the ears and art style of the game still holds up well today.

EINHANDER is the only correct answer, and this is coming from a huge Vagrant Story fan.

Parasite Eve (the first one only!) also still has merit, but it's not the absolute unequestioned best.

I'd rank them

1. Einhander
2. Vagrant Story
3. Legend of Mana
4. Brave Fencer Musashi
5. Chrono Cross
6. Xenogears
------------------------
7. SaGa Frontier 1
8. Parasite Eve
9. SaGa Frontier 2
10. Threads of Fate
other stuff I didn't play.

The ----- is the overall thumbs up/thumbs down dividing line.  I still enjoyed SF1/2 because I love the SaGa series, but they're two of the worst ones and objectively not good games.

Tobal #1 and Ehrgeiz were also great, but as they were developed by Dream Factory I don't really count them as Square games.

Quote

Parasite Eve (the first one only!) also still has merit

was PE2 really that bad?  I'm kinda interested in playing it, since it was developed by the Einhander team.

Chrono Cross. The game had a great artistic direction, and the best OST of the 32-bit generation. It wasn't Chrono Trigger, but it was still a good sequel and a great RPG in its own right.

Sorry, but the only choice is Tobal 2, and it's not on the list.  I count that as more Dream Factory than shitty Square anyway.  imma vote Einheinder or Ehrgeiz or something.

Haha, my wife had three of her friends over the other night...one of them came over a while ago and took pictures of the figures on her phone.  This time, she was like "OH WHAT DO YOU HAVE NEW?!"  and took MORE pictures to send to her friends.  "DON'T THESE LOOK REAL CLOSE UP???!"   :lol

Anyway, TOBAL 2.  You don't have to be a JAPPAFAG to appreciate its awesomeness.  This is a flawed poll.  For shame.

Omg dude at that Mai Shiranui figure.  It really looks exactly like Kinu Nishimura artwork.  I don't like the color of the outfit, tho - her uniform's supposed to be red but the figure's costume looks orange.  Or maybe it's just the picture?  Looks awesome otherwise.

No, it's orange.  I thought maybe because that was the second production run, they changed the color, but all of them are like that.  I got because of how close it was to the original art.

EDIT: Here's the Nishimura art.  Her clothes look orange to me, guess that's why they went with it.

The original art was orange too?  Weird!

Well, it's cute, though not as good as the Kinu Nishimura Cammy/Sakura/Chun-Li statues that came out a while back.  Did you ever see those?

NO IT'S BETTAR

I wanted the Chun-Li one but wasn't willing to pay the cash back then.  The Sakura was good, but the Cammy one was kinda fucked up.  She looked like was ready to give head or something.

Brave Fencer Musashi, bitches.   The only action game Square got right.  VS was nice, but its mechanics were too much for the PS1.   I am positive a sequel or remake of VS would by default be better today.

Nah, but I think it's back in the states and beyond that vague description... *shrug*
I recall buying it and Valkyrie Profile on the same day. I gave both of them a shot to see what I was playing next, obviously VP won out. After finishing VP I kept trying to go back to VS but it was just a huge pile of mediocre. The innovative "keep altering your weapon until your 30-hit combo does more than 1 point of damage" exhilarating as it was, just wasn't enough.

Front Mission 3 - My favorite.  Fuck you haters.  The game was awesome.  The complaints that the game was dumbed down and no challenge didn't really matter to me since I had fun the entire way from setting up the mechs to finding new ways to destroy the enemy.  I've played the game through three times.

Other Square games I done played:

Xenogears - Got it immediately when it hit GH and wasn't really impressed.  It was a good game but not worth the huge hype it got before it went for $19 instead of $60-70 on eBay.

Brave Fencer Musashi - Didn't like this one at all.

Chrono Cross - This game had its moments but once I beat it, I had no urge to play through it again.  A few years later, I can barely remember anything about the game.

I'm a huge Chrono Trigger fan.  CC is just a waste.  I hated the battle system, the story was boring, I hated the alternate dimension thing (with only two dimensions and them being almost exactly alike), I hated the tons of worthless characters (this is a Chrono game, not a Suikoden game...plus, the characters are fugly), the fact that they rape the cast from the first game without a second thought, the fact that the game takes place in the same world as the first game but they don't let you explore any of the locations from the first game...and that's just scratching the surface.  The only thing the game's got going for it is pretty graphics and the fact that enemies are visible onscreen so you can avoid 'em.

It's shit.

You forgot the soundtrack.

But meh, I love the battle system and really like the game. For what it is as a separate entity. The Chrono Trigger tie--ins are just a little nicety.

Edit: I also like what they did to the first cast. But I'm a big fan of "nothing is sacred" in story telling.

The soundtrack had like, one good piece of music - the OP.  Everything else was absolutely forgettable.

Regarding the original cast and "nothing is sacred": Except the original game was basically a kid's game.  It wasn't particulary deep storytelling and what they did to the original cast was completely inappropriate in some sort of effort to turn the series into something DARK and EDGY.

I also thought it was fairly stupid that they did it in such an indirect way.

The darker more complicated parts of Trigger's story were concentrated in the 12,000 BC time period, which, not coincidentally, was the part of the game that was designed by the guy who was later in charge of Chrono Cross.

I hated the alternate dimension thing (with only two dimensions and them being almost exactly alike)

I actually really liked this aspect of the game, a lot of the differences were subtle and clever.  Like how at the beginning when you're lizard hunting in the Home dimension, you ambush a lizard from a ledge, then when you go through the same area in the Another dimension a.k.a. Soviet Russia, the lizard ambushes you.   :lol  Loved the alternate versions of each town's music too.

PE2 was shit, that is undeniable.  "Hey, let's get rid of everything that made the original game awesome!" lol Sad

well it was done by a different team (the Einhander team, in fact).

Anyway, (according to interviews) the Aya Brea mobile game is supposed to be just the start of a new franchise like the FF7 compilation, etc.  So a console game probably won't be too far behind.

I'd buy Parasite Eve: War of the Mitochondria for PSP.  Get on it, Square.

The interview was months ago now, I dunno why nobody's ever pointed this out, but they did say the cell phone game was the start of a new series that wouldn't be limited to cell phones.  By the way, they also say it'll be the "Aya Brea series" rather than a continuation of the PE series.  They're not really following the PE continuity.

They're starting from the bottom up. First DS, then Wii, then next-gen.

On the Wii2.

Chrono Cross was a fucking mess of a game with about 5000 characters too much and a storyline I didn't understand but I enjoyed the game like fuck because there were many cool things to do and it had amazing atmosphere and the colour palette was just eye-candy with the awesome music in the background.

Then again it's been over 6 years since I played it and it was only once.
