Title: PS2 Atlus Games
Post by: Rman on January 22, 2008, 12:46:12 PM
I missed the majority of Atlus's marquee ps2 titles like, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 + 2.  I really want to play these games as I'm a RPG fan and I've heard that they among the best in the ps2 library, however, the prices for these are insane.  And they are virtually impossible to find as well.  Are these games worth their price?  Or should I just stick with Persona 3 and Devil Summoner, which are still widely available at retailers and online.

Nocturne is probably the best Shin Megami game on PS2 but it is extremely rare these days in brick stores. Youll need to Ebay for it.

DDS1 and 2 are pretty awesome as well. Himuro will say that Persona 3 was awesome, but I found the highschool sim aspect of it and the limited time in dungeons to be total poop on an otherwise fun little game.

Devil Summoner is another release from them, I bought a copy but havent cracked it open yet. Its pretty easy to find still, and most people seemed to have liked it, but not as much as the DDS games and Nocturne.

Oh yeah, they did Odin Sphere too but while pretty thats kinda item management hell in a box.

I'd suggest Persona 3 and then check out DDS1+2 if you like that, and finally Nocturne. Devil Summoner if you like any of those games as it is the weakest SMT ever. I suggest going into Nocturne last because it is much more BRUTAL than the other games and having experience in SMT games will make the experience much smoother.

i see DDS 1 and 2 going to around 40 new on ebay (not the collectors edition)

definitely worth it

persona 3 is good, if you dont mind the sim portion, as you level up you can stay longer in dungeons without having to rest, it hasnt happened to my party in a looooong time. Im 35 hours in tho

DDS2 is still sold new at places like Frys and probably online retailers. Thats a good find on 1 tho, I couldnt find that new anywhere.

Also, another nod for Shadow Hearts Cov, its awesome

Saw Devil Summoner for $20 at GS the other day, I didn't bite because it was one of their "new" games (i.e. case all gooped up with stickers), gotta look around for a sealed copy. DDS1 was excellent but I haven't played 2 yet. Only started playing Nocturne, I'll have to go back to that one day.

I've been off of RPG's for years, but Atlus' other PS2 games are not bad.  Sky Gunner is rather delightful, Dual Hearts is charming and imaginitive but the gameplay is boring, and I've yet to play more then 15 minutes of Rule of Rose but it seems okay so far.

Oh, and Samurai Western kicks ass.  It can also be acquired cheaply, unlike nearly every Atlus game in existence.

Slightly off topic, I've also been looking for Evilbore's handheld game of the year 2007, Etrian Odyssey.  I'll probably hit up the small independent stores as I have been having trouble locating it at the big retailers.

I enjoyed Devil Summoner, but it definitely has its flaws.
