can this please be the official thread of distinguished mentally-challenged computer related things people say on tv-shows?

Someone needs to tighten up those graphics on comment #3.
-
I'm sorry but I couldn't read that post because it wasn't connected to THE MAINFRAME
-
:lol
I was confused for a couple of days when my cousin came to me and told me his sister is having a problem with her modem. I was like "Oh? Shes on the Internet though, she was on MySpace recently". A few days later she brings the whole unit over (ie her physical PC) and is all like "HERES MY MODEM"
-
oh god. i hate when people refer to the a pc as a modem. wtf

You need a banner for this thread to be "official"

Enhance...
enhance...
enhance...

yeah, creating visualization data where none exists is a real superannoyance
bones is especially annoying about this, where the hot new-age chick creates advanced 3D modeling software between episodes
-
Also any program used by a federal law enforcement agency to search their database of criminals for DNA/fingerprint matches.
For some reason, they load and display the face of each individual criminal for a fraction of a second while they're compared against the search criteria.
I know it's a result of the screenwriter's mantra "visualize everything", but c'mon! Even *I* know that's horribly inefficient programming.

what do you mean? we have this technology now, it's in upconverting DVD players and SNES emulators
-
don't be obtuse. you can't create significant pixel detail where none exists in a photograph -- you can only interpolate it or use different color distributions to present the illusion of detail. that's not what they do in these shows.
-
shouldn't have expected much sophistication from a hillbilly metal fan. my mistake, won't do it again
-
Any time they "hack" something by typing lots and really fast.
Also that show um, Life? Where they find the shit hidden in Prince of Persia, lulz.
-
"Wait. I've seen this before!
See that? It looks like a DLL file!"
-"It is a DLL file!"
"No. That's what they want you to think. This is actually executable code."
The above is very close to the shit they spewed on NCIS tonight.
WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK.

In these shows they zoom in 100x on a fucking nickel in a picture so they can see the perp in the reflection of Jefferson's booger.
-
Yep. "can you enhance that?" The worst one I can think of is in Enemy of the State (which was, not coincidentally, written by the same clueless moron who wrote Die Hard 4.0) where they have a normal black and white security camera video of Will Smith and they use 3D TECHNOLOGY TO LOOK INSIDE HIS BAG.
-
"Oh god no they are deleting the files!!! :("
"don't worry we have a chance, they haven't reached THE MAINFRAME yet :maf"
-
this thread made my morning :lol :lol :lol :lol
The worst offender was Deja Vu
omg it was fucking ridiculous. wtf

Because no computer thread is complete without it:

This has nothing to do with this thread but I just found out that I can copy to my co-worker's clipboard when I remote desktop into the 2003 Server he's running with Virtual PC. So if he's working in Vista and I log onto the 2003 Server and copy "asdf" that's what he'll paste. I'm tempted to write an application that sets his clipboard to a random piece of text every 200ms or so.
edit: I should create/install it as a service.

Make it read off a text file of the bible or something. Every time he pastes it's a different verse. Bricks would be shat.
I'm not done but I've written a piece of code that does a httprequest to google and scrapes the results using regex. What I'm planning on doing is checking if the clipboard data has changed since the last service tick and if it has doing a google search using the clipboard data and setting one of the results in the clipboard. If I don't get any results back I'll just rearrange the characters in the clipboard data. I just need to figure out which name I'm going to use for the service (preferably a windows service that is almost never installed but that will return plenty of google results verifying it's a normal service).

god that is evil and awesome

I played around a little this afternoon and have most of the code written. I have two mutli-line text boxes where I keep the current google results and the history of clipboard.text settings. I choose a random result from the first google search page (a result is either a header or the text underneath it) and set clipboard.text with it. For this example I copied "clipboard" in my source and hit the run button about 15 times. Here's the result (each line is the result of hitting the run button).

Did you guys see that episode of LIFE where the drug dealer's files were hidden in a secret level of Prince of Persia? It was awesome.
